in order to video chat with multiple users at the same time though, it does require all macs with iChat. But yes one to one video chat with AIM on windows works perfectly (as long as the PC can stay up and running ;) )
I didn't know that.

So which app does one have to have on PC in order to video chat with me on Mac via iChat? Thanks.

You can show just your online contacts in a nice little window actually.

I was mad at the size of the Skype contact list as well until I figured that out. That small contact window is great... very Adium!

EDIT: Just realized that when you switch to the small view, the window stays in the foreground when you are in other apps. Very annoying. You can always close it but then opening it again involves opening the large window first, then clicking to open the small window, then closing the large window.

Good thing this is beta.

what a waste :(

I always preferred the mac GUI over the PC's one, and now they make this dung...

Also it was funny to see such a delay (and cuts) with the video conference at that youtube video. It would be expected to see a flawless communication and instead they just kept it "honest" :D

see, my big issue is that the window floats. it doesn't 'disappear' behind other window; it's just stuck on top of all my other windows. not fun.
i had skype 5 for literally a minute, then immediately switched back to 2.8

It's okay but...
Cover flow for contacts... try it and be prepared to laugh your head off.

I use Skype 2.7 from 2007, and I do not intend on upgrading. Ever. Also all of the images from my copy of Skype 2.7 are from Skype 2.5 or so (I like the glossy look, so I copied the resources)

Annoying pop-ups like the windows version?

Hey, I haven't tested it as I saw the GUI, and, no way.

Anyway, I did try 4.x in Windows 7 until I worked out how to get Skype 3 to work stably (we use Skype at work), and one thing I noticed was that it kept popping up (over my contact list) with little nagging ad popups saying things like "Call a loved one, spend your skype credit", "You can use your skype credit for SMS messages". This was really annoying, and you couldn't turn them off, even with the advertising options turned off in settings.

Do these come up in the Mac version?

I like the new UI, and prefer the fact that it takes up all of my screen. The old UI got very cluttered in my opinion.

Now i can finally get rid of Adium and use Skype as my main IM app.

wait, what?

cluttered? the old version?

Not good.

Did the same. I took the time to send a feedback of verison 5 (beta) to Skype.
Just do that and let them know what you wish.

Long dreaded 1 window skype is finally on mac.

If there's one thing I've always preferred about Windows over Mac (and there's probably only one), it's the single-window approach. I've never liked having multiple tool windows to drag around my screen, particularly when an errant mis-click takes you to the Finder or another application. As a neat freak, the one-window philosophy puts me at ease.

Sidenote: the separate Downloads window in Safari drives me crazy, especially due to the fact you can't set it to auto-hide. :(

not in 2.8

haven't seen any in the 10 minutes i played around with 5.0, either

I don't like that chatting and video calling at the same time is so awkward.
And I hate that each message you send takes up like 3 lines of space and is in a big grey box.
Waste of space!
And why can't we make the window smaller?

I'm a paid subscriber to Skype, I use it a lot as a second (business) line.

Currently using Skype 2.8 on the Mac. (and the Skype App on iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)

Don't really like the User Interface in the latest Beta. I use Skype mostly for phone calls, so the group video chat isn't a killer feature for me. The new contact list is a step backwards as far as finding people quickly.

I typically use iChat for video chat 1-to-1. Although lately, I've been using the Facetime beta. Facetime is very clean and simple to use.

iChat really doesn't hold a candle next to Skype. The picture is consistently better. The sound is consistently clearer.

iChat plays all sorts of games with the bandwidth. It freezes constantly. The multi-chat is pretty much useless. It's terrible. I kept fighting for iChat to be the hero, but nothing ever came of it.

My feeling is Apple stopped playing with iChat years ago, with no intention to ever make it better. Sadly, most of my family uses a Mac, but we rarely use iChat because it is so inconsistent. 90% of my conversation when showing my kids to my grandma is "Oh... I can barely see him! Who are you holding up? It's so pixely" or "Sorry... my sound cut out. What did you say?". Quite frankly, that's how I feel on my side, but I never say anything.

I'm purchasing an 11" Macbook Air for my grandparents before the holidays start up so we can use FaceTime. I'm giving up on the multi-person chat. It's usually pretty chaotic anyway. You can't hear anybody because everybody has kids screaming in the background.

The inspector and font pallettes to get annoying since you'll never know where they'll pop up next for a new application or by accident. I'd rather have it in a single window too.

I don't like the larger window either, but I see that you can hit the little double-window icon above the word "Everyone" and you get a little tiny window similar in width to the one we used to have with Skype 2.8.

I love iChat but many of my colleagues aren't Mac users, so Skype is essential for my research. I agree that the big window is terrible, but maybe this suggestion is helpful.

Good luck!
