Just tested it! It works as advertised. But does anybody know how long Skype stays logged in after you quit the app? Do you stay online indefinitely or just until the app is closed for memory management purposes? Does the app send push notifications or does it need to be physically running in the background to receive calls?

It should be indefinite until you quit the app totally - there is no Push server to register with - it just waits in the background, waking up on any incoming network traffic to determine if it's an incoming call (from what I understand so far). It will be interesting to see how this affects battery.

Finally! I use Skype to communicate with my co-workers (we all work remotely), and have been using Fring all this time because it had push notifications for IMs (I could care less for its video calling). But now I'll be making the switch to the official Skype application. Especially being as Skype discontinued support for Fring.

Update: in a blog post on the release, Skype also announced that it has dropped plans to charge for calls made over 3G networks. The company had previously stated that it was planning to institute charges after an introductory period of free calling.

Wow Amazing this App just got even better!

I heard that apps could only wait in the background for a certain period of time... 30 minutes or so. Is that true? For that reason, BeeJive still uses a Push server and does not keep the chat connections active in the background. I wonder if this is somehow different.

Avoid if JailBroken

The clowns at Skype disabled backgrounding if youre on a jailbroken phone...it forcibly kills the app if you background it..

WTF, skype blocked fring as a result??! fring had multitasking working before skype AND they also have video calls working which skype does not!
It's a pretty big stab in the back from the skype team. Fring is almost pointless now...

Can anyone else repeat this bug?

1) Log into skype then background it.
2) Go into the ipod and play something
3) lock the screen.
4) activate the lock screen ipod controls and pause, turn off screen (using the home button)
5) Now the lock screen controls can't restart the audio playback. Also the double tap and slide left controls from unlocked iphone don't work. Basically it's like the music player is no longer backgrounded.

Signing out of skype seems to return the iphone to normal behavior.

Edit: looks like what's happening is once you pause the iPod, the skype app takes control of the audio so nothing is "playing" in the ipod to restart with the lockscreen controls. This is bad behavior.

Are you use it's actually updated? A lot of people, including myself, found the App Store was downloading the original file instead of the new one.

Mine is updated, it shows version 2.1. I can confirm it DOES NOT WORK with jailborken iPhones

I'm running iOS 4.0 on 3Gs

Interesting. Can't say I'm surprised. Having said that, there's no guarantee that it's something Skype has done. Could just be a bug created by the jailbreak.

Yeah, I'm seeing this behavior too. I thought it was working, but it was Backgrounder doing the job. Now that I've set it to use Native, it fully quits when you exit. What the hell??

That can go on forever :)

Anyone else noticing extreme battery drain with skype running in the background?

I left my phone locked with only Skype running (3G on) and my battery drained 12% in 45min. I thought the multitasking api's were supposed to be battery friendly?

Open or in the background?

this is great for me as my family has gotten into skype over the last couple of years and even my grandpa uses it, though he's pretty techy for a grandpa.

It'll be nice because he'll see I'm online if he wants to talk because hes really not much for his cell phone -- never keeps it on because "no one calls him"

Well we don't call him because we know its not on....

Skype is awesome, glad theyre not going to be charging extra for skype to skype over mobile in the future like previously thought. One less thing for droiders to attempt to hold over our heads.
