Skype calls don't make the phone buzz in silent mode! What's the point, then? I keep my iPhone in silent mode always for the sake of politeness and discretion. Seems like a glaring omission. Is it just me?

Battery life / temperature

So, I downloaded the update, signed in and had it running in the background for a little while.

I come back after about an hour - my desk, where I left the phone, is incredibly hot for a wooden desk and the battery is completely drained on the phone.

Anybody else having these issues with Skype?

Yes, most definitely.

I installed the Skype app update, launched it, backgrounded it, played around with it. The phone was at the home screen when I locked it, after which I left it unattended for an hour. When I came back, 25% of the battery was gone and the thing was hot as blazes -- at least as hot as when I've just finished a 90-minute to 2-hour call over 3G. I used the recent apps list (double-tap the home button) to "force quit" the Skype app and the phone's temperature and battery drain returned to normal.

The phone wasn't used during that time and I didn't receive any Skype calls or IMs during the period. I should note that during this time, I had WiFi disabled and thus Skype was using the 3G connection only.

My phone is a launch-weekend 32GB 3GS running 4.0.1.

Anyone else getting these kinds of battery drains / temperature issues? There's no way I'd keep Skype backgrounded at all times with performance like this.

Edit: My wife reports she experienced the same thing on her 16GB 3GS, which she just bought a couple months ago. Battery went way down, but her phone didn't get quite as hot -- probably because she was on WiFi.

i love this new skype but i noticed that my reception drops to searching a lot and my phone gets really hot!

Battery "drain" here too.
But as of now, I would say about 10% / hour with Skype in the background where it's about 5% / hour when not. So, I can clearly see a difference.

Phone (16gb 3S bought in march 2010) on 3G isn't hot though.
:(

yup me too on my 16 gb 3gs with 4.0.1. So will I still receive calls from skype if I completely remove skype from the background?

I complained about Skype charging me to use my own AT&T bandwidth. So, fair is fair, I will now praise their revised decision :) Multitasking is very welcome too. Add video support and I’d be even happier! And I’ll pay them money too: my Skype-to-phone use is rare, but I do pay for that without objection. (It’s nice for some overseas calls.)

I won’t rush to use it until they fix the battery issue. Proper use of Push notification solves that! (And Skype was notorious in their lack of Push support for ages.)

Annoying to CLOSE

So you have to do FOUR annoying steps to turn skype off:
- Double tap the home button
- Scroll to find the skype app
- Hold on to the icon for a few seconds
- Press the red minus sign

This really shows how the multitasking in iOS 4 needs much improvement.

Fwiw

For what it's worth, I tried Skype several years ago on my WinMo phone.

Same issue - sucked the battery dry doing nothing. I un-installed the app after two days.

It should be obvious that participating in a peer-to-peer network isn't a good idea on a mobile device with limited battery life. (and *all* mobile devices have limited battery life - otherwise they wouldn't be mobile)

still a couple o' missing features

no buzzing in silent mode!
no custom ring tones
no bluetooth

other than it's great =D

I'm experiencing the same problem with the same iPhone, same OS. After about a half hour, the phone was uncomfortably hot.

Only if you turn on "forwarding" (and forward calls to your iPhone) which I believe requires a paid subscription.

Pleased!

Yeah! This is a real boon for those places with limited AT&T signal, but still WiFi. I set up the phone to forward to Skype. In number whenever unanswered or unreachable, probably the latter is most important.

I'm NOT noticing a big battery drain.

I updated it just before I took my daughter to the playground at 7. Made a couple of calls from Skype to test it out. Noticed at about 7:30 that the battery was at 52%. Surfed the forum there for about another half hour, until we came home at 8. Left it untouched until I was just reading this thread, and at 11:11 pm it's still at 40%. I'm not sure if that's a bigger drop than normal for half an hour of use and 3 hours of standby, but it's certainly not some of the figures some are reporting.

Also, the first thing I did was call my Skype in number and it rang through perfectly. So, it was aware in the background the whole time.

By the way totals for the day are:
4H 53m Usage
15H 12m Standby

Get with it, Skype.

Skype really is the worst company when it comes to supporting an application on one of the most commonly owned cellphones. Other, less popular, apps updated their applications for multitasking before the iOS4 was even released.

Call me when they actually get around to implementing video chat. They should have been working on this MONTHS ago when it was first known that there was going to be a front-facing camera.

I expect more from such a popular company.

Anybody else notice their battery not lasting as long while running this app in the background? My battery died on me tonight and usually lasts all day...

What does this mean?

Does anybody know what this means for my iPad and iPod Touch 1G? They do not support multitasking. Does the app at least stay connected and send me push notifications once somebody calls me?

Thanks in advanced.

iPad will get iOS4 in a few weeks/months - so everything should be supported by then. ipod touch 1st gen on the other hand: nope, sorry. you're out of luck. you can't even install iOS4 on this. I'm not sure about push notifications tho'

Flaw in implementation

There seems to be a major flaw in the implementation of the backgrounding in Skype, either that or it's just me?

If you log into Skype while you have WiFi coverage, if you then move out of WiFi Skype stops working, it doesn't switch over to 3G automatically. You then don't receive any messages or calls.

Perhaps this is because they're not using push notifications, as I've not seen other apps do this?

Likewise.

I'm certainly seeing it use more power - this is from a 100% charge last night, with Skype in the background constantly.

Certainly nothing like what's been reported in here.

This is on a lunch day iPhone 4 with iOS 4.1b.

Good to hear they dropped that extra 3g charge they had planned. That was truly blatant money grabbing going to Skype headquarters that would have done nothing to invest in the actual 3G network.

Simultaneous incoming Skype/iPhone Calls

Does anyone know what will happen if both your Skype-in number and iPhone are called simultaneously? Will the phone take precedence?

I'm wondering because I use Google Voice and my calls are forwarded both to the iPhone and to Skype. Will I be able to choose which to answer? Or will the incoming iPhone call boot Skype? I suppose I could disable GV forwarding to my iPhone and have it go only to Skype....once the battery issues are solved.

Phone ALWAYS takes precedence. Whatever it is you're doing - receiving a _REAL_ phone call will immediately send the app to background (or kill it) and let you answer the phone.
