How far off could these be? I am looking at getting a MacBook in the next couple of days. Based on this rumor and its source, should I wait... or is this something that if its true will be months away.

Unless you are in a real pinch I would wait until Nov. With X-Mas coming you just know the Macbook will be out soon and should have the new operating system with it. I am waiting. :apple:

I can totally see that a touch screen of some sort will be available on the notebooks soon. However, I really don't think you will get a preview of anything that is on screen. As someone has already pointed out, it would probably prove to be too much of a distraction. Also, what happens when you start typing and you rest your wrists on there?

I can see an extended touchpad with pinching options etc, but without a screen coming along. At most, some icons will be present as in this latest mock-up by noreds but I'd still be wondering what will happen when I start typing. These are all nice ideas though and a lot more creative than I could ever be.

that's why i put the pictures up
because it is purely dreaming
but who wants to just dream of what we know is possible at the minute
if we all worked like that we'd never have had the iphone
what if there was some sort of sensor which locked the touch screen as soon as you typed or there was a small sensor strip above the touch pad and when covered locked it.
the previews could work for certain programs like DVD and other media involved programs. then change to only the access icons on the left and blank screen for use when say browsing safari.
could have a simple "preview button" which turns on or off the browsing and preview settings on the touch pad.
i suppose though in the end the "coulds" and "what ifs" are endless so lets just hope that Apple bring something decent out and they do it tomorrow since I'm heading to US on holidays on Saturday so i wanna buy my shiny new MBP with shiny new touch pad. lol

Nice ideas , but the speakers are really misplaced, what if you listen to music and you rest your wrist there than you can't hear anything

i know it sounds crazy but hear me out
dont put your wrist over the speakers
i personally have never rested mine there
do you know where them wrists have been and with who
fold your arms, rest your hands on your legs, put them behind your head (your hands not your legs ok) there are so many new and exciting places to put your poor neglected wrists
go now seize the day with this new found info i have bestowed upon you
it's only a mock up im open to suggestions of where to put them (no smart answers please) and any other changes that would make it look better

I made a modified version of Noreds mockup. As much as I tried I just don't like the look of the macbook keys on aluminum. Maybe if the keys are metal as well. I'm curious to see how Apple will handle that.

This is my dream MBP. I would pay extra to have a multi-touch trackpad installed. You can control iTunes, watch videos and podcasts, use it to control Logic (virtual mixer), use widgets, etc...

A second screen will be on the ouside (see Intel laptop designs: Newport and Metro) so you can check emails, Wi-Fi connectivity, maybe iTunes etc without opening the case or powering up the main screen thus saving power and extending battery life.

I say get rid of the speakers from the top all together, and have em made at the bottom. That way they will play off whatever they are sitting on which usually improves their sound.

Am I the only one who thinks that the MBP design is perfectly fine as it is? I don't like the black border in that mockup at all. It looks great on the iMac, though.

I think you're right about them not using the black border around the MBP screens. For consumer use I think it works because it makes videos and images "pop" more. But, for professional use, I think a gray border around the screen is ideal. It's like having a 16% gray reference point around the image.

Still, I'd kill for a MBP with a multi-touch trackpad (like having an iPod touch embedded into the laptop). I've recently decided to wait on my MBP purchase until Leopard comes out. Too many rumors flying about...

Too Darth Vader

Please, God, Don't let the new laptops be black. Been there. Done that. Have the fingerprints and smudges to prove it.

Or a dockable touchscreen

Since Apple already markets a multi-touch pad, why not dock the multi-touch device into the Book? You could buy a Touchbook or a Phonebook (cringe!) :)
The pad would be so versatile. In music apps, for example, you could use a touch mixer. Of course you could do the photo pinch thing too. In a graphics software you could draw vectors, narrow lines, airbrush etc with your fingers - next-gen finger painting!
The software would drive the UI, instead of accommodating the UI. Games could design whatever UI they want that fits the pad.
This way Apple could sell more Books, more phones AND rule the world!

I seem to remember Apple having a patent on a detachable trackpad. I can't seem to find it though.

there could be a simple icon somewhere on the touch pad or a keyboard short cut or dedicated button to switch between coverflow mode and navigation mode. coverflow is being used in everything in leopard by the look of it.
it could also switch into coverflow when you changed applications say from browsing in finder where you just navigate
MacBookProTouchBlank_400.jpg

then when you go into iPhoto it turns to coverflow

im not saying get rid of the usual navigation. if you want the navigation only style you could do it in the settings.

Wouldn't surprise me as they are the last "plastic" mac line in production.

Plus the Macbook is the last white Mac.
Both of these points make a strong argument. Not to mention aluminum is far more durable than the polycarbonate plastic, anyway. I've just bought my MacBook a short while ago, so this news is kind of a bummer for me, but oh well, that's what I get for buying any computer. (The fact that it will be outdated the moment you buy it.)
