I certainly hope there is an SSD! Would Apple allow the pc to be the first to have an SSD as stock equipment?

If Apple does hold back one improvement for the next edition what might that be?

Well there is a SSD allready now, you can choose between a HDD or SSD...

TB is one thing that the other computer manufacturers and external component companies had better buy into. It's just so far ahead of what USB 3, 4 or 5 is or could be at this point. The ability to have external drives, graphics, scanners, be connected as if they had a direct connection to the processor is impressive.

The issue those HDD manufacturers have with adding TB is that their drives, even at 7200 rpm can't come close to competing with the ability of the TB controller for throughput. This is why HDD manufacturers had better start adopting SSD, because that is the future (for now). If Intel keeps at it and makes TB an optical fiber solution, the speeds we're seeing now will go up and up. It's one of those technologies that will force Intel to make the leap to the next level of chip performance, in order to have the chip keep up with TB.

Well, at least this is mho.

They would be extremely foolish to not add a dedicated graphics card, What would be the difference between macbook air and macbook pro then? When they go to update the macbook air's the new ivy bridge cpu's will fit in with no problems and then there WON'T be a difference between the air and the pro's besides screen size. Do you guys see how stupid not putting a dedicated graphics chip in mbp would be? That's the only thing that has been separating MBP and MBA this whole time besides maybe the 13' MBP. Please do some critical thinking before you go and say that they aren't going to put in a dedicated graphics card it's quite foolish to think they won't.

This is exactly what I want. A thinner Macbook Pro but with a dedicated graphics card. I would happily lose the disk drive for this. Retina display would be even more awesome.

Actually, my old late 2006 15" MBP is thin enough and fast enough to satisfy me, but if it lost a bunch of weight and kept the matte display I'd be far more pleased. Heck, I'd even consider the 17" if it shed enough weight.

You could go one step further - maybe Apple should be using the computing power of some of these stand alone graphics processors for more than just graphics processing. Or maybe integrated graphics will improve exponentially and the need for old-school graphics chips will go away. I'm not arguing that Intel's current chips are not ideal for graphic intense processing, but again, that doesn't mean that things will stay that way. As MS improves their OS, with a more graphical oriented UI, the need for better graphics processing may push Intel further forward with the quality of their system.

Just because you haven't you think that means that nobody has? My primary external storage is Firewire, as well as that of many others.

So what you're saying is that my opinion is not an indicative cross-sampling of the user base?

But apparently based on the user sampling here nobody uses an ODD now so it's okay to get rid of that?

Funny how that works too.

----------

Dont worry, Firewire will have a new companion on the 'failed' list soon; Thunderbolt.

1+ year later and still barely any devices available and even the scarce choice is overwhelmingly overpriced. Once USB 3.0 comes out for MacBooks, TB is going to be dead; noone is going to want to buy new connections just to use TB, noone is going to ditch all their old peripherals for the TB (one because its pointless and two because there are no peripherals anyway!), etc. etc.

And if Apple don't update the Mac Pro so that people who are willing to pay for and need that kind of interconnect speed have access to it then the minute user base will shrink even further.

Ok this is my first post here in the forum after following it for long time , I was provoked with that debate about optical drive

Well I think I am from that group that still uses optical drive
I work in Egypt and Middle east as news reporter and I do video reports for a TV channel there and I still use ODD in my work more than twice a year.

Before anyone tells me to buy an external drive , well I need something for mobility with less accessory especially with all the accessories I got for my camera and its accessories. Everyone has its own needs and uses.

I hope that Apple thinks outsides the US and Europe because in the Middle East and many parts of the word there is no access for Netflix or iCloud so easily.

And the MBP 13 with ODD is not heavy for God sake and there is reason why people buy it while there is MBA 13.

As a user I will welcome a higher resolution

Looks like I'll be waiting for a while for a 17".

It'll be worth it.

Amen.

I have the 15" 09... the last one made with a 3/4 expresscard slot.
I need that slot.
Not paying $150 to have adapters for adapters cluttering up the world.

...and it better have space for two 1TB SSDs that can function in raid 0 (the sata III optical port is broken in current models).

Reaching speeds of 950+ MB/s. Go where no man has gone before, without massive rack storage.

After this update, they can ruin it/slim it down all they want.

What I really hope is completely clear to Apple that they must offer a Pro notebook with the most recent and powerful notebook CPUs and GPUs. Otherwise the geeks would start shopping elsewhere. Even so the Geeks are only a 10% fraction of the buyers, they are usually the ones that influent a lot of people - the main part of the remaining 90%

Are we just making up stuff now? I'd like to see the data on why people selected their Apple products and just how many did so because some geek advised them to.

Not to mention that self-identified 'power users' and the rest of the neckbeard community have been the first and last ones to sneer at Apple products in general and iOS devices in particular, yet Apple is making more money than you can imagine. If a bunch of geeks jump ship to linux no significant number of consumers are going to care one bit.

The opinions of this self-appointed pseudo-elite aren't as important as they wish they were.

Regarding the SuperDrive...

Do I use it? Sometimes
Can I live without it? Probably

What I wish they'd do is remove the SD reader. Either put back the Express card, or add another USB (or better USB3) port. This is one of the main reasons why I haven't upgraded my Pro since before the Unibody (that and the glossy screen). Some people don't use SD (myself included), and an extra USB port would be infinitely more handy.

Just my 2¢

my dream setup:

same dimension and style

black anodized option
removal of ODD
addition of a dedicated GPU on the 13inch
addition of a 2nd fan / better cooling on the 13inch
integrated SSD for the OS and option for SSD/HDD for the HD slot.
more usb ports
an A/C adapter that actually matches the unibody design rather than the old plastic macbook.

I can't stand the term 'retina display' its marketing BS from Apple at its best. At first they claimed it to be on par (or better) than typical print resolution (300dpi) and yet the term is still used even for the iPad when its well below the 300dpi mark.

I'd expect noobs in the public to be duped by the term, but not anyone on forums like this one, most of us here are pretty tech savvy.

You're one of those people who gets an escalade for free and complains that it's not the right shade of black you wanted.

I agree, adding the Expresscard slot back to all the Pro laptops would definitely make them more appealing. I'd take an eSata port or two over a meager SD card slot anyday.
Hell, Apple should just stick Expresscard slots on the iMacs and Minis too!

I seriously doubt Apple will included or even offer dual TB SSDs, your talking over a grand each 3rd party... and Apple would charge waaaay more with their markup and "apple tax" on SSDs. Unless you mean your just going to drop that coin and install yourself?

I'd be surprised if they went straight SSD right now, it still hasn't become a cost effective drive, Apple would really be limiting users for storage on their smaller SSDs, the line would seem some big price increases if SSD was stock.

I think they'll do a hybrid drive, small SSD for OS, and nice HDD for storage etc, at least until SSDs become cost effective for the avg user to pay for or upgrade different sizes.

I just got a new ipad (3). Neither my wife nor I can see a lot of difference between the retina display and her ipad 2's display. The 3 has a very nice display but that's about it. Hype is hype.

The Current 13" MBP is still a VERY SWEET MACHINE! And will be for years to come!

you are probably right, but like jsquared, i just ordered a 13" mbp i5 too and i'm trying my damnedest to not get upset.

i guess if i really wanted to, i could just deny delivery.

What a fake ... chips are not out yet. Intel has delays and also nVidia or AMD just starting with their new generation. If massproduction started ... then they will sell it in 1-2 months, can't believe that.

There was a rumor a few days ago that said the reason behind the Ivy Bridge delay was because a certain, particular OEM had mass ordered a bunch of new processors, particularly a company that uses a good amount of low voltage processors.

And Apple has been known for getting processors in advance.

Apple are losing it if they get rid of the optical drive not everyone downloads games from the appstore or steam i still buy blizzard on optical format i prefer it with the box art, and bonus stuff. by taking away the optical drive it will become virtually a mac book air without the flash drive. I prefer it a be beefier and keep the optical format, and people who don't want the optical drive and want the thinness can buy the air.

Should apple get rid of the optical drive from macbook I'am hanging on to my old one and turning to a iPad I hope apple don't do this to the iMac.
