Should apple get rid of the optical drive from macbook I'am hanging on to my old one and turning to a iPad I hope apple don't do this to the iMac.

Removing the optical drive from the iMac would be just plain stupid. The thing is supposedly a full fledged desktop (well by Apple standards) and it should be treated as such.

I’m glad I got my MBP when I did. I wouldn’t buy one without the DVD drive. I have already burned a few DVD’s and CD’s. It is not ready to go away yet. People need to back stuff up for other people and DVD is a hell of a lot cheaper than USB stcks. :(

PREACH IT BRO THERE GOIN SOME FOLKS THAT WANT TOO BURN DVDs AND PLAY THEM

Again, you guys are missing the differentiation between the MBA and MBP line thinking the optical drive is even one of the top five differences.

The MBA is completely about portability and long battery life and as such uses low voltage CPU's, integrated graphics, has limited storage options, no ethernet or firewire, and is only available in an 11" and 13" screen size.

The MBP however offers high-end mobile CPU's designed for max performance instead of battery life first, has dedicated GPU's, more storage options, has ethernet, firewire, more USB, and is available in 13", 15", and 17".

This. The ODD doesn't even hit the list when I debate between a MBA and a MBP for my portable machine.

Apple are losing it if they get rid of the optical drive not everyone downloads games from the appstore or steam i still buy blizzard on optical format i prefer it with the box art, and bonus stuff. by taking away the optical drive it will become virtually a mac book air without the flash drive. I prefer it a be beefier and keep the optical format, and people who don't want the optical drive and want the thinness can buy the air.

So you want to carry around a ODD all the time, for the what - once every 6 months installation of a Blizzard game? Why not buy an external, use that for Mists of Pandera, Diablo III and the next Starcraft game, and spend the rest of your life not having to lug it around?

The video/audio production people being upset I understand. But you have to keep the ODD internal because sometimes I install a Blizzard game?

Can't wait for this.

After reading at Best Buy on a MBP this a Best Buy guy comes up to me and asks if I'm interested in getting a MPB. I said no ill wait for the new one that's supposed to come out this year. He tells me the only difference will be blah blah blah. Something way different and not mentioned here. I just said okay and didn't bother to argue with him.

I seriously doubt Apple will included or even offer dual TB SSDs, your talking over a grand each 3rd party... and Apple would charge waaaay more with their markup and "apple tax" on SSDs. Unless you mean your just going to drop that coin and install yourself?

I'd be surprised if they went straight SSD right now, it still hasn't become a cost effective drive, Apple would really be limiting users for storage on their smaller SSDs, the line would seem some big price increases if SSD was stock.

I think they'll do a hybrid drive, small SSD for OS, and nice HDD for storage etc, at least until SSDs become cost effective for the avg user to pay for or upgrade different sizes.

I don't want any Apple SSD stock. They still charge $500 for sata II 256GB.

2 Terabytes is perfect for all the working files/applications I need.
Thunderbolt adapters are a terrible deal ($180 for the Seagate desk)...
It raises the value of internal SSDs for me, so yes, i'd drop 1.1-1.3k for each SSD.
Stick with FW800 for footage/backups.

It's a shame that the optical drive is disappearing. I have tons of DVDs that I still use regularly and don't really want to have to rent them off of iTunes due to the steep prices in the UK. Oh well, a Superdrive will have to suffice.

There will be only slim MacBookPro as the news said.

No more optical drives.

You dont need powerful GPU in a laptop. If you are a gamer, you play with iOS or Xbox perhaps even AppleTV will have some games.

Laptops are for adults. Not for gaming children.

With 75 negatives, in the future, think before you type... 'adults' use discrete GPU's to run 'adult' programs, like AutoCAD and Adobe CS, and a variety of movie editing programs, not just video games.

Hi guys, new to the forum!

So I've been keeping my eye on the rumours for a 2012 MPB. I hope, like many on here that it has a dedicated graphics card, SSD and a higher resolution display among some other great rumours.

However, upgrading the hdd and ram in the current model is also tempting and good enough for my needs/desire.

I am worried - Once an Apple product updates it's rare that you'll be able to buy the old version (at least from Apple directly). If this new 2012 MBP doesn't meet my needs is there still a way to purchase the current model (direct from Apple) during/near the time of upgrade. Or am I just going to have to listen out to see if Apple mention anything before the update or if strong rumours come to light?

Sorry if posting it here isn't the best - I'm just sure others may have a similar worry.

Thanks!

I'm not too adverse to this. I'm planning on buying a MBP this summer for college so lighter would be better. I also love digital art so here's to hoping for a discrete graphics card. Anyways, I figure even if I don't like the redesign, I could probably find the late 2011 model for a cheaper price (don't know if I would ne forced to buy refurbished or not).

When do you guys think the new upgraded MacBook Pro will hit the market? late April, beginning of May, perhaps? any predictions?

There should be stock in the refurb store and possibly the clearance store soon after the update. Apple often clears old stock via the refurb store.

Thank you for the reply :)

My issue is as a student, I would be looking to take advantage of any student discounts.

I don't think a retina display will be possible until Haswell or Hardwell chips are used. a 13" retina screen would use nearly twice as much power as a standard 1280x800 screen.

If the new MBP has any 5 of the following i'll be sold:

- Lighter and more slim
- More horsepower
- Substantially greater graphics capabilities
- Reasonably longer battery life
- USB 3.0
- Higher resolution on the 13" (doesn't have to be anything close to retina)
- Same price ranges as the current 13", 15", and 17" models

Coming from a 2008 MBA 1,1 i'm very eager for the next update..

Just thought I'd point out, you can still get the boxed version of any Blizzard game, input the serial number(s) on the battle.net site and download the game from there. Best of both worlds ;)

I would add a small SSD drive around 16 or 32GB for booting OSX and peripheral drivers. HDD in place of superdrive. 1600x1024 IPS display. Upgraded Ivy Bridge Intel graphics. That's all.

Not to sound mean, but you don't know what you're talking about on this. Digital Content Creators (the people that build the assets for the games, the movies, ad campaigns, medical visualization, architectural visualization, etc.) use software that's been standardized on GPU acceleration via parallel instruction execution. AutoDesk, Adobe, Unity, Dassault Systemes etc. all have shifted major portions of their code to being executed on the GPU in customized ways for their various apps because the modern GPU has become quite powerful at number crunching.

Unprecedented numbers of users in these fields have switched over the last couple of years to the Mac in spite of the Mac's mediocre OpenGL implementation, because the software developer's optimized their apps and started moving towards GPU acceleration leapfrogging OpenGL at times. At this point it's crucial that Apple get it right simply because while Apple consumers are bringing the company billions DCC users are far more loyal and spend far more money on Macs and Mac software. Should Apple's consumer sales stumble, if Apple treats the business and business DCC customers right, the DCC Apple customers will save Apple again like they did through the 80's and 90's.

I am really starting to worry I'll be picking up an iMac and iPad to replace my current MBP. I'd really just rather have a 15" pro though. Lets hope this redesign doesn't sacrifice performance and expandability any.

I'm definitely hopeful for this new slimmer design.

I've been an apple customer my entire life yet I've never had a Mac, so I'm waiting to see what this next refresh of 15" MBP will be like.

I will be happy with no ODD as long as it provides me some benefit other than just thinness. I want dual drives, more battery, something.

Also want an anti-glare matte screen standard, as well as higher resolution standard on the 15" screen.

Why do people complain about SSD's because they are too expensive? The more common they become, the cheaper they get, I for one am hoping that Apple makes them a standard because then as with so many other things, the rest o the computing world will follow.

As for optical drives... I can't wait to get rid of them. Such a waste of space. And for the many people out there that do still use them? One external optical drive per household is all you need. Not one in every computer

How old are you? Which Apple device did you have in the 90s? An Apple II?

"Retina display" is a term coined by Apple, true. That Means that it is accurate. If they made up the term an the meaning behind it then how can it be wrong? If the called the iPad "iPad HD" then that would be wrong, because whoever created the term High definition said that it meant 720p in 5 years time when FHD is no longer the highest possible resolution for video will you say the the term is false marketing or wrong? It's what they call it, so who cares? If you're so tech savvy you should be smart enough to look past the name and get over it

No Super Drive, Crosses Thin Line

Having no superdrive changes this computer into another category, the Macbook Air is great. Although not being able to buy a standalone professional laptop (MBP) with all the necessary tools to get work done makes this an odd purchase. I mean if your going to sacrifice useful tools for more portability why would you purchase a 15 inch Macbook Air any ways, just get the 11, or even a 13 inch.

Consumers have spoken they don't want ODD, Ethernet, Firewire, or USB connectors on their MacBook Pros. Apple will do the right thing with the refresh and eliminate all these ports. We all want a super-thin, powerful, professional laptop. I don't even care if the memory is upgradeable as long as we can max out the onboard to 16gb. These are exciting times.

ODD is one thing that the majority can perhaps live without, but for a 'Pro' laptop Ethernet is a must. This is not optional, because most wireless networks in corporate environments are good enough for web browsing and email, but not enough if you have to transfer any bulk data. As for USB I think Apple are being too stubborn for their own good here - USB 3.0 would be of benefit to a lot of users right now, where Thunderbolt is still work in progress. Fro a Pro machine memory can't be non-upgradable. You may have fixed requirements, but a lot of us would add as much memory as we possibly can as soon as prices enable us to do so because we use it.

They are not going to keep it for the minority. Ever heard of an external optical drive? Go google it.

No! Tell me more, Mr. Science. :D

Of course I know of that option, but it kind of defeats the purpose of a laptop computer to have clunky peripherals hanging off it.
