Stop calling people who want a dedicated graphics card children. You don't know what you talking about. First of all people do a lot of graphics work on laptops, using it as a desktop replacement rather than placing it on their legs. That doesn't work so well with the 17" for example.

Besides if an adult wants to play a PC game or two they are allowed to do so without your patronising tone.

OOOOppppsss.... are the school's out already?

Time to have your sweets and play on your XBox.

There's a good boy. Pat. Pat.

Sorry, but MacBooks are portable computers. You should always choose portability over convenience. I guess you rip your DVDs at home, right? So is it really such a problem to plug in an external ODD? I really don't understand why some people are so stubborn.
Stubbornness goes both ways you know.

I can't stand the term 'retina display' its marketing BS from Apple at its best. At first they claimed it to be on par (or better) than typical print resolution (300dpi) and yet the term is still used even for the iPad when its well below the 300dpi mark.

I'd expect noobs in the public to be duped by the term, but not anyone on forums like this one, most of us here are pretty tech savvy.

Uh hello... The term retina display means that you can't see the pixels from a normal viewing distance. (As Apple said, NOT that the term means a specific dpi) Who uses an iPad at 10 inches from their face? You should really agree that something that Apple makes that is great is or you should get off a website specifically made for people who like Apple.

Well I would liked to hear about some Mac pro updates but this is good news for those that want a new laptop.
I wonder can apple put in an optical drive in a thunderbolt display and have it powered via the display. Seems like a good solution. Small when on the go and when your home you have a big display and an optical drive. Seems like and ideal docking solution especially with all the connector the display offers.

I don't need it to be as thin as the Air:

- Lose the optical drive
- Discrete graphics
- Primary drive is SSD for the OS and apps
- Secondary Hard Drive for more storage (User Replaceable)
- Higher Res Display
- Gigabit Ethernet Port
- USB 3.0 (3- 4 ports), Firewire
- Thunderbolt port
- User replaceable RAM, I want to be able to add 8GB on my own without the RAM being soldered on.

I also really want someone to come up with a good Thunderbolt docking station... minus the Apple Cinema Display.

Why just we put a 3.5" diskette drives back in if we really need 10-20 year old obsolete disk drives on board?

They are so cool, and smaller than DVD cases, I want 3.5" floppy's back !!!

Hardly a fair comparison; people still use disks for media all the time.

My MacBook is perfectly portable with a DVD drive built in. Know what would damage the portability, though? Something like carrying around an extra accessory along with my laptop just so I can use disks...

And as for the people who say to carry the external optical drive with you when you need it... It adds the weight right back in and requires you to find a spot to set it up when you need it.
Remember people differ in what they need.

It's nice to see other people who realize that people use computers differently from each other and therefore have different needs.

So is this a lesson in manners or a technical discussion? The optical drive will get dropped when the balance shifts from the great majority using an optical drive (like a few years back when there were few alternatives) to the great majority not using (because there are choices, and inconvenient or not for the few who need an optical drive there IS a choice there too).

I have a macbook air and when I bought it the apple salesman convinced me I needed the external drive too. I think I used it once. Not even sure where it is now. While my mileage may vary from yours I suspect I am in the majority these days not the minority for laptop users.

And apparently Apple thinks so too. I look forward to a thinner Macbook Pro. It might convince me to give up my Air for some more horsepower.

Isn't choice grand?

So if they're getting 100,000 this month...

How many do they need to StockPile before they start putting them on sale??

Yes it is, so why do you insist on no giving us a choice? Right now if I want a DVD it is available in the MBP, if not then the MBA is a good choice. If you remove the DVD from the MBP then I no longer have a choice, do I? You just removed that choice.

I'm keen on Ivy bridge, no DVD and and a thinner form. BUT a high res screen is nearly all I want. If they don't have high res 13 or 15, I'm simply not buying it.

I find it absurd that the iPad gets this glorious screen, when the highest level of content is 1080p. Yet you cant resolve a whole page in Word on a 13 MBA or a 15 MBP. Come on Apple, lets get a glorious screen in the laptop line!

No more than you remove my choice of NOT carrying around an optical drive I never use by demanding every MBP have one in it so you can buy it. A MBP without optical drive can be thinner, lighter, and more portable. That's a choice I would like to have that you want to take away.

You CAN choose to carry an optical drive outside the case. Sorry if thats more inconvenient for you, but you can. Why do you insist the rest of us be inconvenienced for you?

In this discussion you have more choice than I. Shrugs.

It's unfortunate when some folks just can't grasp basic laws of physics. Retina display relates to the eyes ability to resolve detatil at a normal viewing distance. DPI deals with physical dimensions only, and has nothing to do with viewing distance. Providing a resolution higher than what the eye can resolve at a normal viewing distances is a waste of time, money, and effort. Why create, produce, and pay for something not needed?

When holding a 300 dpi printed page next to a 150 dpi printed page at arms length, the human eye can't see the difference. If anything, people purchasing 1200 dpi laser printers have been duped by marketing hype. You only need that type of resolution if you're going to be holding the printed material near the tip of your nose.

I'm afraid you will be disappointed in this next round of Mac laptops.

Apple is the first company to dump what they consider to be obsolete technology. The DVD drive is on that list.

Seeing as how well the MacBook Air sells without a DVD drive... I expect no future Mac laptops to include an optical drive anymore.

Now... even though the MacBook Air is in the "ultraportable" category and not the "Pro" category... I still think the DVD drive will be a no-show on future laptops.

Everyone who wants a DVD drive is simply a luddite.

I'd be walking out of the Apple Store with a 32GB iPad w/ 4G right now if it weren't for the posting of this rumor.

I'm hoping for 16:9 aspect ratio, without ODD or space for one. I'm wondering if they'll use the MBA SSD blades as primary drive and offer a 2.5" slot for another SSD or hard drive. 2.5 inch hard drives are much smaller than optical drives and they can totally still offer a dual-drive solution while keeping it slim.

16:9 aspect though really grew on me with the 11" MBA. It just looks...sleeker and more modern whereas the big tall 15" MBPs look last year. As long as the resolution is respectable losing 150 pixels over a 16:10 panel doesn't bother me.

You'll always be able to connect an external drive for these uses.
yes but only if that mac is about 200 dollars cheaper than the previous model!

I do want a macbook pro 15 with retina display, no need for optical drive, but must be 200 cheaper than previous model,ivy-bridge i7 quad over 2.4GHZ, 8mb cache, 16gb ram, 512-1024ssd,2g GPU amd rather than nvidia.

Or a 17 inch retina not needed, with optical drive,ivy-bridge i7 quad over 2.4GHZ, 8mb cache, 16gb ram, 512-1024ssd,2g GPU amd rather than nvidia.

Sorry, but get ready to be disappointed.

With the Mac App store and iTunes (or amazon and others) for downloads of music and movies Apple is moving away from physical media. Just look what happened to the Mac Mini, no DVD drive and that is a desktop computer.

I don't care whether they remove the OD or other stuff, just please give the 13" Pro the option to have high res antiglare, glossy screen is annoying as fawk to use lol. 13" is great for traveling, and don't want an Air as been there done that, doesn't last as long on batter as the 13/15, heat, and doesn't handle heavy multitasking like virtual system as well.

Full resolution independence and retina is essential for any future Apple machines.
