No optical drive?

I'm a videographer whose clients almost always request a DVD of a video.

I also have a large collection of CDs I'd like to import into iTunes.

No optical drive will make both these points a problem.

Apple gets too far ahead of itself for the sake of a slim design.

How often do you burn DVDs or rip CDs on the go? The optical drive isn't going away, it's just going external. It might be marginally less convenient to take with you, but for all the times when you don't need it on the go, you can save some weight.

Sounds interesting it will be more interesting to find out the CPU and GPU specs and the screen res I guess.
But God damn you Mac Rumors, I can only afford and am only interested in the iPhone 5 this year, where are the rumours???? They've all dried up lately bar the estimated launch date.
Sorry for the rant, anyway will the 13" get discrete graphics at last? Place your bets.... Or will the space be used by a bigger battery and extra storage drive?
As for the odd drive loss, well the new Razer Blade has ditched it in favour of digital games and programmes content and it's a games laptop, but maybe Apple could include a thunderbolt DVD drive?

Drives?

The big question here is what drives this will come with. Losing the ODD is a no-brainer, although it will inconvenience some.

The big question is what storage can fit in this computer. 9mm HD or SSD? 7.5mm HD or SSD? MBA-style SSD? More than one of the above, or some combination of the above?

A lot of room will be gained by losing the ODD - but Apple's going to want to put as much battery as possible inside...

When are mobile Keplers supposed to become available?
ACER recently showed an ultrabook with NVIDIA Kepler graphics. If ACER can do it, Apple can too.

Add me to the list of people who want a retina display on his new MacBook Pro. My first-generation MacBook Pro is getting quite long-in-the-tooth, even with the SSD I installed. The 32-bit Core Duo processor is the biggest problem -- can't run Lion and can't upgrade past 2GB RAM.

I'm glad the powerful MacBook Pro line is not becoming a light version of itself.

There are many who need the processing punch of the MBP (as sexy as the MBA might be) and the storage options.

The going away of the optical drive is fine.

I would like to see a 2-drive MBP with a smaller SSD drive that houses software and "currently worked on" large files, and a large spinning hard drive for storage.

Stop calling people who want a dedicated graphics card children. You don't know what you talking about. First of all people do a lot of graphics work on laptops, using it as a desktop replacement rather than placing it on their legs. That doesn't work so well with the 17" for example.

Besides if an adult wants to play a PC game or two they are allowed to do so without your patronising tone.

Right on. I do OpenGL development, and if Apple would go SandyBridge/IvyBridge only, I would have to abandon ship. The "Pro" in MacBook Pro has a meaning, you know? Air and iPad brands are for the masses. The Pro are a niche for the -- wait for it -- PRO users!

Instinctively I thought removing the ODD was a terrible idea, and then I actually thought how often I use optical media. I've burned maybe 5 dvd's @ home in the last 12 months, and at work I use a portable Sony USB Burner (iMac drive broke).

As I see it, that thing is so tiny, if I know I'm going somewhere where a client may need something burned, then I'll pop it in my bag. Otherwise it sits on my work desk cause that's the only place I've ever needed it

You'll always be able to connect an external drive for these uses.

I'm pretty sure he knows that. But having an single unit that is slightly larger is better for him than having a smaller unit and having to carry around an external drive making the whole package larger. Is that so hard for some people to comprehend?

I'd like to see the ODD as an option, with the option of also just getting it with a second HDD or SDD drive. But for me I'd live without the "option" if they take away the internal ODD and give us a second HDD/SDD bay, quad core CPU and discreate graphics on the 13" while still retaining the expandability (FW, GB Ethernet, 16gb RAM etc.)

so of ivy bridge isn't out yet, and these puppies are already in production, what processor is in them? quad I7s ?

ps: please let it house 32gig of RAM.

best,
SvK

Actually, quad core Ivy Bridge CPUs were not affected by the delay, only dual core ones were.

I believe it would be safe to assume the new Macbook Pros are Ivy Bridge based.

Losing the optical drive sucks. There are certain times when you do really need to either read or burn a disc. Such times may not be frequent, but not having a disc drive would necessitate lugging an external one around (and all its cables) all the time. What is the point of having a super-tiny laptop if you have to carry a bunch of external crap around with it?

So I'm guessing there is no chance the new MBPs will have Nvidia Kepler GPUs then?

When are mobile Keplers supposed to become available?
Not anytime soon--NVIDIA is in real trouble. TMSC has temporarily shut down production on NVIDIA's 28 nm manufacturing fab due to the extremely high failure rate of Kepler chips. If Apple actually bothers to put a real GPU in the next MBP, they should go with AMD.

I'd like to see it keep the ODD. The MBP's already light enough.

I also really want them to keep the ethernet port. If they remove the ethernet port then they're pushing people towards getting Thunderbolt Displays simply to get ethernet (unless they release a Thunderbolt to ethernet adapter).

This has been a long time coming, but surely u all see how Apples other products create the leapfrog across categories. It's the Apple TV and 1080p on the iTunes store that paves the way for this move, since they can now circumvent Blu Ray by offering native full Hd via iTunes. The ODD has been dead for years and Apple have simply been biding there time to build the resources neccesary for a 1080 web model. Now this kills Blu Ray. Like everyone else says, if u need to burn discs, grab an external for the rare occasions that you do. Theyre very clever in the order that they release things. Never getting an "oh you bastards why did you do that", although the loss of FireWire on that one line of MBP was a premature and shortsighted move which they quickly corrected. But - the New iPad, I must say, is Apples first product in a very long time which was thicker than its predecessor. Now that's something I think Steve would never have let happen

I can't stand the term 'retina display' its marketing BS from Apple at its best. At first they claimed it to be on par (or better) than typical print resolution (300dpi) and yet the term is still used even for the iPad when its well below the 300dpi mark.

I'd expect noobs in the public to be duped by the term, but not anyone on forums like this one, most of us here are pretty tech savvy.

I have just written to Apple to tell them that you have repeatedly posted here that you do not like this marketing term.

They answered already and said:

When you come up with a similar display launched by your company you can name it anyway you like.

We like to reserve the right to name Apple products or features the way we see fit.

They also will send you a free eye exam coupon for an eye doctor who specializes in dpi perception.

She will check your retina, but call it something else, so there are no psychological scars from using that word. During your visit you can then agree on a new word to be used.

Let us know how that shakes out, please.

And post it at least 12 times, so the tech non savvy are not being confused.

BTW: I came up with Aniter Display, would that please you?

At first they claimed it to be on par (or better) than typical print resolution (300dpi) and yet the term is still used even for the iPad when its well below the 300dpi mark.

300dpi for most print is overkill. At the print shop where I used to work, we ran some dpi tests. At 175lsi, we found there was no difference between 262dpi(1.5x line screen) and 300dpi(2x line screen). So, I'll take Apple's 264dpi, 99% of the users will not notice any pixelation.

Maybe they will drop the "Air" name, use slim form factor for all notebooks, and just call them MacBook and MacBook Pro again. Would make most sense to me.

I wonder what would differentiate the 13" Pro from the 13" Air? Will it just be the faster CPUs and perhaps more ports (Firewire) that differentiate it today? A Retina Display, perhaps? Or perhaps they will use the slightly more room to add a discrete GPU? The latter seems unlikely given the rumors of offering integrated graphics in the 15". Or perhaps the 13" Pro will get Ivy Bridge first, along with 2 USB 3.0 ports to go with the Thunderbolt port, while the Air will stick with Sandy Bridge until the summer.

If the Semi-Accurate story is true, what is the likelihood that Apple will put IVB processors with Intel integrated graphics in the 11" and 13" MBA (they have adjustable TDPs) and IVB with discrete graphics in the 13" and 15" MBP?

I really do hope this rumors becomes reality sooner rather than later! Can't wait to see what Apple does to the Pro line. And yes, +1 to SDD+HD

If they remove the optical drives from these I'll just have to get a refurb previous gen MBP when I upgrade soon. This really is stupid, Apple. Not exactly unexpected by any means, but still stupid.

Theres no math behind it, its purely a marketing term.

Yeah... and it's Apple's marketing term... used to describe Apple displays.

Anyway... here's what Steve said on the matter. Pixel density AND distance:

As you said, how often do you need an ODD? 2-3 times a year? Think of it this way, what would you prefer: Having a fast SSD and a good GPU every day of the year or having an ODD to use 2-3 times a year? I think the choice is easy. How many people are using/burning DVDs on the go anyway? I don't carry my DVDs around because I might use them someday.

I think the 11 should remain the "Air", the 13 just the "MacBook" and the 15 and 17 inch the "MacBook Pro". In my opinion the 13 is and never will be a "pro-model".

How about Firewire?

I REALLY do hope they keep Firewire in there. If they do - I will definitely upgrade from my 2009 13" MBP.
There are quite a lot of us musicians out there having audio interfaces that depends on Firewire, and that bring those along with us.

If it there could/will be a Firewire-to-Thunderbolt adapter of some sort - then it doesn't matter. But I NEED that connection.
