I agree. And given Apple has rejected apps for using "too much network bandwidth" when they were audio only, the chances of them allowing it over 3G seem remote to me.

Phazer

Seeing how ATT already allows versions of the Slingbox on other phones on their network, the bandwidth issue could not be used to not allow the app without legal recourse.

I never watch TV live anymore--no ads for me! I prefer time-shifting via EyeTV, so I can watch whenever I want. And EyeTV already syncs shows to my iPhone. (I wish there was an EyeTV remote control app though.)

But if I couldn't accept delayed viewing (after my next iPhone sync), SlingBox sounds good.

The only thing delayed viewing doesn't work well for is sports. Kind of pointless to watch after you know the final score.

Ok, I don't know too much about this whole Sling thing, so quick newbie question.. I'm moving pretty soon and want to cancel cable. Say I buy a SlingBox and hook it up in my parents home, several states away, who have a huge HD cable package. Could I then watch any channel that they get over broadband on my iMac and eventually iPhone? That would definitely make the cableless transition easier..

you would need to have your own cable box over at their place ... but yes. (otherwise you'd be stuck watching what they're watching, or piss them off by changing the channels all the time)

Reimbursing your parents for an extra cable box at their house is a lot cheaper than getting cable at a new location. And it's extremely cheaper than getting NFL Sunday Pass/MLB Extra Innings/etc. if you don't live in the home territory of a favorite sports team that they do. Not that I'm condoning doing this.

the only bad news here is that we have to wait another 3 months. Other than that thumbs up!!!

Also... Apple allowed Orb which works on 3G.

This is great, but there is a much simpler app that they could make so easily.

I wish they would make an iPhone version of the remote control (with the picture of the real remote, like on the desktop app), so I can control the TV on my iMac from across the room.

I'm sure there are lots of people like me who only use their Slingbox as a way of getting TV on to the computer in the same house. A simple slingbox remote app would be perfect.

I've thought of this too. When I'm no my excercise bike and wanting to change the channel on my slingplayer on my computer - would be nice to be able to do it from my iPHone.

Or even an IR-pass-through application would be nice. Since Macs have IR ports, if an SlingPlayer could read inputs from my Actual Tivo remote, pass them to the slingbox and onto the DVR/Tivo whatever. The keyboard is too far away.

this is the one thing i've been waiting for to get a slingbox. might also upgrade my iphone for this

This is great news. :D

Wow, when you sit back and think about it, the iPhone's feature set is amazing:
Phone, Camera, Music, Movies, Photos, the Internet, Games and now TV.

All we really need is video recording and copy/paste and we're set.

Don't get me wrong. TV on the iPhone is a definite A+!! It looks cool but someone needs to write them and tell them to make the controls more iphone friendly.. that up down left right overlay is atrocious! They should make the guide mode more iphone friendy, allow you to flick your finger to scroll through the channels (like you would address book), tap the show you want and have one select/enter button on the side.

The favorites interface isn't bad. They could make it smaller. They also need to make it so when you tap the off the controls they go away like the quicktime interface. It would be real annoying if it was a time thing and you had to wait for it to disappear.

Anyone know where to send feedback to slingbox?

Let's have some perspective

They need to completely rewrite the slingplayer app for Mac, and keep parity with the windows version. The windows version has DVR functionality and channel guides at the moment. The windows version is also stable, something which cannot be said about the mac version.

I'm sure a lot of people will see this news and go out and buy a slingbox, just know that the mac software as of right now is ABYSMAL.

I think you need to elaborate on why you consider it ABYSMAL. Otherwise, you're just as guilty of deterring mac users from buying a slingbox based on your unsubstantiated comments.

I regularly use both the Windows and Mac software. Yes the Window's version has extra features, but the Mac version hardly qualifies as abysmal. I get flawless operation when I hardwire (ethernet) my macbook, but sometimes erratic operation when going wireless. On a related note I get better wireless reception on my ipod touch 2g than my macbook. What does all this mean? Well, in my own experience the problem happened to be hardware related and not at all software related (ie mac slingplayer).

(btw that DVR feature is not the real thing, it's just a 1 hour buffer)

The channel guide UI is coming from the TiVo, not the app. You don't have direct interaction with the guide itself. You send commands via a virtual remote, which then sends it to the device. Since there's a delay in this transmission, you won't have any idea where you actually stopped scrolling. I can flick my finger down and a second or two (possibly more depending on network) later who knows which channel I'll end up on? Plus every device it will be hooked up to has a different interface, so it's not like they can use one generic "if the user taps at X:Y, then send the command to click on the 3rd channel down." Assuming every single user had the same model TiVo with the same software version, then you can do that. But people have cable company DVRs, and they tend to vary county-to-county, even with the same provider. There are literally thousands of different devices a Slingbox can be hooked up to (DVRs, DVD players, TVs, VCRs, etc), having up/down arrows is the only way to really pull it off.

Not to be a troll, but I've been using Hava on my ATT 3g Nokia E71 and N810 (tethered) to my phone and I love it. Sling has been prioritizing the iPhone and Blackberry platform so much, they've just short of stopped S60/Nokia development, so I went to Hava. Their product is great, better than Slingbox, IMO.

Guess my comment is meant to comfort those who don't think ATT 3g is up the challenge. It streams quite nice for me.

Streaming my Dish DVR anywhere is an incredible thing, bandwidth be damned. ATT is the one that's probably shaking in their boots...this app coupled with the iPhone's popularity will slow the network to molasses speed...

Does ATT endorse Slingbox use? Or is an app that happens to work on phones that happen to be GSM? ATT doesn't endorse tethering, which is very easy and very possible with any Nokia (for example) GSM phone. A few button clicks with Nokia's software and you are connected...

I use the Mac software every day. It is far from Abysmal and never crashes, so I'm not sure what you mean. It is in feature parity with the 1.x version of the Windows software.

I don't particularly like the 2.0 windows software because it's too slow on slower PCs. The buffering is pointless to me streaming from my Tivo - the dual buffer gets confusing and there isn't a way to turn it off. The guide is also not a feature I have found useful; when there's a guide on the DVR. Perhaps for slower connections maybe, but I mostly watch recorded content, with which the sling-guide doesn't help much.

I also use the Mac slingplayer daily like harley3k and it is very stable. I use it on both powerPC and Intel based Macs and I have several different model of slingboxes.

If anyone is looking for a Slingbox. Office Depot has the Slingbox AV on clearance for $32.94. I found a couple at the downtown Seattle Office Depot and picked them up. The AV model does not do HD but if your ISP has limited upstream bandwidth it is a good model since you need high bandwidth for HD quality.

Psssh! Quaking in their boots? The only thing they can think of is to charge subscribers for overages. It's all about the all mighty ($$$). But you have a good point if everybody's doing this on a regular basis. ;) We shall see.

I dont think u realise

I can't wait for this to come out right before baseball season. Wow, can't wait to hit a tree because I was watching slingbox while driving. Would love to hook it up to a TV with iPod video cables.

"SlingPlayer for iPhone will be submitted to the App Store in March of this year. Sling Media representatives expect the application to be approved by Apple."

Counting the eggs before they hatch I'd say. It would be funny if Apple denied it just be a bunch of asses.

I bought the original SlingBox about 4 years ago and it has been a wonderful thing. I watch live sports on it when I'm overseas and I frequently use it on business travel to keep up with the shows I watch (so I don't have a huge backlog when I get back home). When I built my house earlier this year, I put an ethernet jack over by the SlingBox so I wouldn't have to run wires from my router to the SlingBox.

I'm skeptical about how well it will perform over the iPhone -- I have some glitches at times when in a hotel where the bandwidth is spotty. If the app is reasonably priced (under $10), I'll give it a go, but otherwise I'll wait until others have tested it out. Clearly, the iPhone client will never get used overseas (neither does the data feed on my iPhone), but it will be a nice choice if I'm out and want to catch a bit of a game and don't want to wait.

Funny? Apple's practices with the App Store and how they treat the developers will come back to bite them at some point, I think. Not now, when there isn't a real alternative to the iPhone, but when there is...
