Actually you're WRONG. It doesn't 'stutter' number one (at least not in 4.2 GM on IP4) and two - it opens the app in it's last state (landscape) as designed and then promptly switches it to portrait. No fuss, no muss.

Watch my videos in the first post. Please. Just watch them to see the skip I'm talking about. If you can't see the difference, then I don't know what to say to you.

I told myself I would ignore this thread...it's like having to slow down and stare at the scene of a car accident.

You should get together with TheSpaz, I bet you two would really hit it off.

Seriously, you just really don't get it. Yes, if you close Safari in landscape mode, hold the phone in portrait and then re-open Safari, yes it opens in landscape as designed, and then switches to portrait. Then close it and open it again, and are you seriously telling me it doesn't stutter? Try opening and closing the Phone app and the Safari app and see the difference in the opening animation. Phone app is so smooth always, and Safari looks like crap after you've closed it in landscape mode the one time. It's lame, and I notice it all the time now, hah!

It's like trying to tell people their CRT monitor is flickering because it's set to 60hz, and they tell you they don't see any flickering.

I guess it's good that CRT monitors are rarely used these days.

Amino, I think it's time to move on. You're right, there's an issue with at least 4.1 (haven't test 4.2 yet), and there are those of us that see it and those of us that don't. What can you do? I see it, I agree with you, - I've tested this on 3 different phones, and they all do it.

But whatcha gonna do? The only "person? you need to convince of this problem is Apple.

1. You don't even have to close Safari while it's in landscape mode. Just switch to landscape and back to portrait. I've found that if you've used landscape in an app at all, the app will start doing the stutter when launched from the home screen until the app is forcefully quit from the launch bar thingie.

2. I agree that it's all about what people think they see vs. what is actually happening. Everybody's iPhone 4 does this if it's on 4.1 or higher.

3. I've been telling Apple. I have an actual bug report filed (note: not the same as Apple Feedback) and I first told them about Camera.app and Photos.app and then as I messed around more I found that it mostly happens after an app goes into landscape so I told them about that. I also gave them my videos. The funny thing is... the Camera.app and Photos.app animation issue was fixed in 4.2, but sadly not the landscape thing.

Since I'm not a developer, I couldn't run the 4.2 betas and help Apple with fixing it. They actually asked me to try 4.2 beta 3 to see if it still happened. However, I couldn't because I'm not a developer (like I said a second ago).

I understand that people think I'm insane because a little glitch bothers me. It just looks bad and it wasn't like that before. It wasn't stupid of me to think that a minor update would cause my brand new phone to start slowing down already! It's only been a couple of months!

Final note: I just wish people would at least check out my videos and tell me if they see a difference between the 2. If they cannot tell the difference, then those are the people who are saying that their iPhone is just fine. The thing that worries me is what if Apple keeps putting out bad software because people are content with it instead of giving us the best experience possible? I've always been a fan of Apple's software because of the experience.

Thank you WilliamG for your support.

I've noticed the interface slows down if you have a lot of background apps open at once. This is an obvious side effect of the amount of CPU and RAM they're consuming. close them down and it's only slightly slower than it was in pre OS 4 versions.

I've also noticed the camera app is so slow to open and respond in this situation that taking a quick photo of anything in less than 30 seconds or so from opening the app is impossible. Again, close those background apps and it's ok.

This is absolutely not what we're discussing here. Nothing at all to do with it.

But on your train of though, it's really obvious when you're running low on memory on your iPhone 4 - a lot more chequerboard pattern when scrolling up and down loaded Safari pages...!

We think you're insane because you notice things that aren't there. Before you tell me to go watch your video, I have. Just because people perceive a problem doesn't mean it exists. My iPhone runs completely smooth (3GS) on 4.1. I tried the various things people have mentioned here on how to cause this skip and nothing happened. If it really bothers you, I envy your life, as I have far more important things to concern myself with.

With all do respect(kinda), I think your ridiculous. That little like 1/10th second animation skip gets to you? Damn. My phones jailbroken 4.1 and loaded with cydia apps and not one of them skips like that, nor does even folder enhancer. You guys are OCD freaks.

It is there. Its not made up in my head. However, I have an iPhone 4, not a 3GS. My iPhone is pushing 4x the pixels you are. Perhaps your iPhone has no problem. I don't have a 3GS to test this on so I just have to take your word for it.

If my toaster was toasting bread evenly, then they came out with a firmware update that made the toast come out unevenly toasted, I wouldn't be happy either. Why does everyone think it's okay for Apple to do this? It's only a few months old. It's not like I'm asking for them to optimize the graphics to run on an iPhone 3G. It's the iPhone 4. The newest iPhone there is. There shouldnt be slowdown yet.

I don't know who the spaz is but I assure you that I'm not the same person.

What's sad is that you took the time to post in a thread that you obviously don't care about and you want to put down others that do care even though what we are discussing isn't hurting you at all.

Thanks for your contribution though. It was very helpful.

I stand corrected. There is a very (and I mean VERY) tiny difference in the way Safari opens vs. say Phone or Settings in this scenario. It's not a stutter by any means, just a slightly faster realization of the app screen in question. You really have to be looking for it to notice it. However, it's so far from being a bug that it's ridiculous.

If you think Apple's going to waste any cycles on this, you are insane.

Hah! Glad you see it. :D

Actually, I do think Apple will address it at some point. It's just a matter of when. Part of Apple's iPhone greatness is how slick everything is. With misbehaving animations, it tarnishes that mystique somewhat.

But to call it not a bug is madness, so's you know.

Hey guys,

I just wanted to post in support of poor Amino man. Yes, the iPhone 4 has this issue. At least on 4.1 it does, I haven't tried 4.2 yet. The way he describes it is accurate, instead of seeing the app icons fly away and the background zoom the app just pops up with a tiny zooming effect.

This does not hinder phone operations in any way. It does not indicate a huge performance problem. It's just probably some sloppy coding somewhere along the line. The phone likes to stutter when you swipe over to spotlight, too.

So what does this all mean? Nothing. It's an aesthetic issue. We all understand this. However, it can be obnoxious for people that care about this stuff, especially considering wallpapers were not allowed on the iPhone 3G BECAUSE Apple wanted this animation totally smooth.

So in conclusion, everyone chill out, stop insulting each other in this thread, and just move on with your lives.

I agree that it is just cosmetic, but there could be something else that is causing the phone to choke slightly. It could be a a bug that is making the iPhone access the disk at the wrong time causing the animation to pause like that.

For the record, I'm very bothered by judder in movies, but blu-ray and a 120Hz TV has taken care of that for me. I also hate screen tearing in video games as well as poor game performance. Unfortunately, I game on a PS3 and most cross platform games perform like crap on it. It bothers me so I won't buy the game (even if it has a good story).

That's just a little background about me. I'm very aware of frame skips and my eyes just seem to detect it very easily.

What once was a very smooth experience on the iPhone 4 is starting to diminish and what bothers me most about that is that I have NO CONTROL over it. I mean I can choose not to buy a video game or a 60Hz TV, but I can't choose to downgrade my iPhone firmware or fix the bug myself.

I'm sorry if I am upset over a small thing. It's just how I am.

Absolutely Amino, I don't mean to say that it shouldn't matter to you, I more meant to express that people that don't see it as a problem should chill out and stop criticizing you. Judge not lest ye be judged and all that.

There are actually many plausible explanations, but I know it's a software and not hardware problem. One thing to be aware of with the A4 chip is that it is single core and cannot perform out-of-order processing. That means if multiple tasks demand it at once, some tasks can interfere with the speed of processing of others. That is what I believe is happening here. Another example is that the iPhone and iPad stutter for a second when swiping to spotlight. This is because the system is activating the search function and pulling up the keyboard at the same time, so the animation suffers.

It bothers me too. Not a ton, but enough to notice. You're not alone in that.

I have updated to 4.2 from 4.1 and I can also see that problem.

But I haven't seen that on 4.1. It bothers me, but what can we do? I think that Apple know about it very well, but they're turning iPhone 4 in old, slow device :/.

I assume iOS 4.2.1 didn't fix this?

I don't know. I'm too scared to update to 4.2.1. I don't want my iPhone to go even slower now.

I'm also jailbroken with multitasking turned off (it helps with the animation bug and as an added bonus, my home button doesn't act up as much).

perfectionist and OCD are two separate things

things can run 100% and be fully functional but OCD people will still think something is wrong and have an anxiety attack
