My iPhone is using iOS 4.1 with modem firmware version 1.59.00 and doesn't stutter when doing what you've listed. Maybe the current modem firmware bug talked about in the Apple support forums has something to do with this.

Is there anyone with 4.1 and 1.59.00 having this issue? I realize this isn't the "Hacks" sub-forum but it may help get to the bottom of this issue which some are experiencing.

Mine is 03.10.01

Hmm. Strange.

Why would the modem firmware make a difference? Why does it happen after landscape mode?

By the way... The iPod touch also does this an that doesn't even have a modem firmware.

I just made another discovery! Try this:

Open notes.
Turn iPhone sideways until it switches to landscape mode
Go back to homescreen
Open notes again

Animation skips!!! It skips the entire first half of the animation and only shows the very end of the zooming. You will not see your icons smoothly scatter off the screen.

Try it and let me know if yours does the same thing.

Please.

Tested this with my phone(iOS 4.1) and the animation didn't skip and was rather smooth.

Okay then I don't believe you. Sorry. I have to see this myself in order to believe anyone anymore.

No offense.

That's fine, i don't see any reasons for lying.
If you are having problems with the animations, then it doesn't mean every other iPhone 4's should have the same problem.
I don't know if it helps but when i upgraded to OS 4.1,i chose "Set as new phone" in iTunes.

OP, this is probably the worst case of OCD i have ever seen.

its not sloppy even when its slow.

I believe Maziar, we are expected to believe you right Amino Man. Anyway my experience is slightly different to the one you have, this thing you call animation lag does happen on my Iphone4. But only if i open the app from the homescreen. if opened from the app switch bar it opens normally.

However while i can see the difference, i can understand why others say they done. Lag or jerky are the wrong words to describe it. just looks different, to me still looks smooth, just faster.

It also doesn't bother me in the slightest that there are different animations on my phone. I brought the phone for its features and since it opens apps perfectly when i touch an icon it operates in a manner which I'm very happy with.

To be angry at Apple or even slightly annoyed by the different animations is pretty ridiculous. Do you touch an icon to open the app or watch the animation, if its the former it does this perfectly, if its the latter go watch a cartoon or something. Get over it, iOS has different animations. Its not a big deal.

That's the problem I have with some people claiming that they don't have the problem. What they see looks "fine" to them and it's not really jerky at all, the animation just pauses for a split second and then it starts in the middle (what would have been the middle of a normal animation).

The app doesn't open faster either. It still takes the same amount of time to open. Here's the difference:

Explaination of normal smooth animation:
Tap app icon
Icons fly away as the wall paper zooms in and the app zooms to the front until it's fully open.

Explaination of the animation lag:
Tap icon
Icon freezes on dim for longer time
Icons do not fly away and wallpaper does not zoom toward you
App jumps to front with a short zoom

Basically we get only the last part of the full animation because it skips at the beginning.

People should watch the YouTube videos I posted in the first post to see these 2 scenarios in action. Also, it seems to only do the skip after I used landscape mode in the app.

One more thing. Who cares if I'm being OC about it. It's my iPhone and I've only had it for 2 months and it's already starting to lag and stutter!?!? I wouldn't expect that from a brand new device. It's not like I'm asking for the impossible. I'm just asking for a smoother experience that I had before I updated to 4.1. Unfortunately I can't downgrade, otherwise I would.

I tried it on my iPhone 4 running 4.1. No choppiness here.

But maybe it would be choppy if I were streaming Pandora and running my GPS nav app in the background while pushing email updates.

Do you see the problem if you've hard-reset your phone to kill all other processes?

(My phone was last hard-reset a couple weeks ago after loading a bunch of app updates in it. It's run continuously since then. So I have plenty of apps lingering in memory, just nothing that backgrounds in a particularly CPU-intensive manner.)

Please go back and read the first post. If someone can follow my directions exactly and post a video of their iPhone 4 producing the same results before and after my directions I will shut up.

Please read the first post. Watch the videos.

I can do this any time. Clean install. Fresh boot. DFU restore. It makes no difference what I do. If I use landscape in an app, it screws up the launching animation.

It only started doing this after 4.1. I even reverted back to 4.0.2 while Apple was still signing it and it was perfect again. Then, like an idiot, I installed 4.1 again and now I can't go back to any lower firmwares.

wtf i thought 4.2 was suppose to solve the jerky animation issue, i saw a video of a dude on 4.2 and its fast.

so in other words there's nothing wrong except for the fact that you have OCD/an utterly boring life and normal people aren't bothered by a millisecond difference

It is fine until you use landscape mode. Also, using orientation lock doesn't make you immune to this bug either because YouTube goes into landscape automatically when you watch a video.

Yes I'm being a bit OC.

Also, it's not the millisecond that bothers me. It just doesn't look right. It's a visual thing. How would you like it if you were watching a movie and every once in a while 5 frames just gets completely skipped. Would that 1 millisecond bother you then? What if you're listening music and every once in a while it skipped and played silent for a millisecond? Would you start getting annoyed?

That's what this is like to me. I'm using my device, everything is flowing and smooth when all of a sudden, I get a really annoying skip in the visuals. Why does Apple bother putting a nice animation there if the iPhone can't draw it correctly?

At least I know how to avoid it ALTHOUGH I'd rather just be able to use my iPhone anyway I want and not have to see that horrible skip. I'm not going to close my eyes every time I launch an app either.

haha, thats ridiculous dude, thats like saying you would sooner get in your car from the passenger side because theres a dent on the drivers side and you don't want to look at it. Who gives a s**t.

Obviously I give a crap.

Also, don't compare a physical dent in a car to software. That's not even the same thing. I can fix a dent, I can't fix the software.

Another thing... If I took my car to Apple to upgrade it and it came back with a dent, I wouldn't be happy about that either. Your analogy sucks.

As much as Amino has OCD, every iPhone 4 has this bug. Whether you notice it or not. And I'm on 4.1 running 1.59.00 baseband, and so is my wife. Both with the same crappy animations.

this thread is pretty ridiculous. None of these animations are sloppy. everyone is just so used to the smoothness of an iphone that the slightest thing will make them think its sloppy. Switch to a droid phone if you think its sloppy. Then come right back after realizing what sloppy REALLY looks like.

You're WRONG. This glitch only happens after you've turned the phone to landscape mode after opening Safari etc. So it's clearly not working as intended, or it would skip the animation every time.

I've found myself noticing it a lot more lately, too. Oh well..

Actually you're WRONG. It doesn't 'stutter' number one (at least not in 4.2 GM on IP4) and two - it opens the app in it's last state (landscape) as designed and then promptly switches it to portrait. No fuss, no muss.
