If this is the case. Sell the phone without storage and let the user supply via a microsd card or whatever. Without storage and apps it is not an iphone. If Apple allows us to supply our own storage it could be a killer little phone.

Ohhhh.. I like this idea. You can then upgrade it at your leisure. So all iPhone (Nano) comes with 1GB of flash, but is upgradable to 128GB or more via uSD card. Beautiful!

Why does everyone think cloud storage is a good idea?

Waiting on buffering, not being in a 3G area or being on the train/plane etc just totally limits it. I'll stick to the full size, thanks.

the future is not to have a massive hard drive in every item we use. It's evident with the new MacBook Air. CD drives are going good bye too.

Runs on orange juice, too

I'm starting a new rumor, since I guess no evidence is required to do so. The new, smaller iPhone is powered by orange juice. Just place your iPhone in a regular glass of orange juice -- no pulp, please -- and it soaks up all the acids. This give it enough power to last four days.

Apple is working on another version that will juice an orange for you if you don't have access to juice.

The article is complete bullshit. There's no chance in hell the phone will not support the App store. That is Apple's goldmine. Why would they choose to not support it. Sorry but the story is completely wrong.

would someone please explain this push to make the iphone SMALLER??!! has anyone ever heard someone say "wow, this retina display is beautiful, but damn, i wish they made it much smaller!!".

:confused::confused:

Simple. Apple is going to redo the feature phone for customers that don't want the expense of a smartphone

It's not going to be a ******** iPhone. It's a new product.

The cloud part of the rumor is bs though.

So how well will $0 (on contract) iPhone Mini without memory compete with $0 Android phones with 6/16GB of memory (and SD slot)? What would you choose?

Why on earth would Apple do this? It's one thing on the AppleTV where it is stationary in your home wifi environment. It's a totally different one when you have to rely on spotty and expensive cellular data plans. Want to listen to music on your iPhone? Sorry, you have to wait until you're back in 3G coverage area...

Seriously, this whole cloud computing idea is a great idea in concept, but terrible in implementation. Until there is a reliable high-speed internet solution for every nook and cranny of the country, it's just a pipe-dream. This is particularly true of the data-capped and costly cell phone data plans. Cloud computing just will not work until the cellular data infrastructure improves. If you think otherwise, then explain why the app store has been a huge success when Web apps have largely failed. In theory, Web apps are much better. They are platform independent, don't require a push through apple to update, don't take up space on your device and so on. And yet, people continually download more apps for their devices than they use Web apps.

the point is it wouldn't be for you. you would go for the iphone 4, 5 etc. i have a 16gb iphone 4 and only use it for a handful of apps and email. i have ZERO music on my device. Same with my wife. I have several friends that are the same way. For a lot of users, iphone 4 space is overkill.

Smaller iPhone to Eliminate Storage, Rely on Cloud-Based Content?
This is the uncomfortable part that Steve was talking about when he talked about the post pc era during the All Things Digital interview a few years ago, and all I hAve to say is that it'll be a cold day in hell before I trust 100 percent of my data to the cloud.

It would have to have an SDHC or SDXC slot for expansion RAM to be any sort of smartphone. No, I don't think Apple wants to make a feature phone, and I don't see the point of producing anything that doesn't use iOS (after all, Apple wants to sell us Apps and to continue to support development on this platform). If you chose how much memory your device had by installing it yourself in an SD slot, and could upgrade it later, that would be an ideal way to keep the initial cost of such a device down. Streaming will, as others have said, be hard on battery life, and is useless where there is no signal, so it could not be the ONLY way to utilize media on this device.

Might be useful for some but I need my mass storage. What's the point?

I bought a 32gig iPhone4 for a reason and would buy larger if it existed.

this would not be for you then, why is this so hard to understand? lol.

there are people that are NOT data hogs...and they are trying to catch that market also.

that is a pretty big minority

sounds like this won't be the right phone for you. Both my wife and I have 16gb iphone 4 and we don't use the storage whatsoever. we are not heavy iphone users at all so a phone like the rumor would be perfect. Not everyone loads their phone up with music and movies. Some just like email and a few apps and text messaging. so pay all that extra money to have storage doesn't make sense.

I think "the rumor" would be a great name for a phone.
"the iPhone Rumor" yes. and don't go calling it the iRumor.

look at the pic above. why is this so difficult to grasp???? lol

? That's not what YOU replied to me about. YOu replied to me that they could make an Ipod Touch with voice easy.

I replied that we already have that device and it is an Iphone.

YOu said look at the price difference.

I said that is what happens when you make a Touch a phone. And if you cut corners to get a ******** screen and camera you are still looking at a high price point - $500ish.

Now you say look at a pic of an iPHone just shrunk down?

While I don't believe that is going to happen either that is not what you replied to me about.

Also my understanding of this rumor is we are talking about a $200 pricepoint.

This notion that this mini-Iphone could be $200 is absurd. Not to mention Apple isn't one to make ******** versions of their products.

Nah it is my belief that a smaller Iphone would be a completely different product. Apple's take on a feature phone. No data plan. No apps or a new more limited app market. No cloud data. no 3g. Although it may look like a tiny iPHone on the surface.

It is for the customer that doesn't want or can't afford a smartphone and the expense of the monthly payment. It is also for the Ipad owner who may not a want a $700 phone to get with his or her $700 Ipad.

Those that want storage and apps will buy the current and future iPhone 4,5,6,etc, those that don‘t want to bother with apps and storage, but would still like an Apple made phone will buy the new, smaller one, makes sense really.

Because the Mac App Store proved they could open a completely different App Store, and still be very very successful.

They could open a brand new Nano App store (with maybe a resolution independent SDK for developers, that makes automatic bigger buttons on smaller displays, to be introduced at WWDC 2011).

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

I suppose there is a market for this device, but it will be utterly laughed at for having no storage space for Apps.

I'd say they actually go with 4 or 8 gigs. They need space for the OS, and Apps, at the very least.

What's wrong with making this a 4 gig to save money? 0 gig is impossible and just dumb.

LOL seriously, what are you angry about?

why is it difficult to see how an ipod touch is equipped? I sent you a link of how to add a sim card to an ipod touch and it's only $89. if you cut out storage, made the device smaller and not as high quality camera etc. it can easily be had for $200.

Adding a sim card and antenna and making it a phone does not cost another $300.

ipod touch already has a camera all it needs is a sim and antenna, which does NOT cost $300.

take some of the components out like storage, smaller screen size and lessen the quality of the camera and retina display.

Lots of people would be happy with a small, simple, attractive and easy to operate phone that might just have enough storage for a few family photos, a few phone camera shots, iTunes. Maybe a few simple games and a limited number of apps.

Don't need a ton of memory or a big screen.

Certainly doesn't need a contract.

This makes perfect sense to me. Apple should compete in any market it can and the non-smartphone market is huge.

People who post here want all the specs, the hacks, the video conferencing...most people don't.

Question is if there are enough people that would buy such a feature stripped device? It would work in less places than the iPods .... Apple usually does not make niche products for just a few people.

This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. The no-storage, 780p Apple TV is the second dumbest thing... Oh, wait, that one actually happened!

Remember how the original iPhone rumors said it was going to have two batteries? This reminds me of that, but then again, so did the Apple TV 2.0.
