Dont be short sighted

Apple is offering what no other company can offer. Apple is putting the pieces together in perfect sync. Google doesn't have the infrastructure to offer this and can't piece it together quickly..

Brilliance through innovation

lots of people would be happy with a small, simple, attractive and easy to operate phone that might just have enough storage for a few family photos, a few phone camera shots, itunes. Maybe a few simple games and a limited number of apps.

Don't need a ton of memory or a big screen.

Certainly doesn't need a contract.

This makes perfect sense to me. Apple should compete in any market it can and the non-smartphone market is huge.

People who post here want all the specs, the hacks, the video conferencing...most people don't.
exactly!

This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. The no-storage, 780p Apple TV is the second dumbest thing... Oh, wait, that one actually happened!

Remember how the original iPhone rumors said it was going to have two batteries? This reminds me of that, but then again, so did the Apple TV 2.0.

content isn't even streamed in 1080p so what is the point? it's kinda like my father in law who laughs at people who don't have 1080p hdtv's yet, he doesn't have a blu ray player or anything to use the 1080p.

at this point it is a waste of money and you would complain if it was included and cost $200 for the unit.

I'd say 2-5. The "cloud" has always been around its just a buzz word now.

Until the wireless carriers can provide coverage that is completely reliable, it shouldn't happen.

i made a quick mockup

I don't think that the screen will shrink down that small. I can see the screen staying exactly the same size as it is now, but the black bezel below it and to the sides disappearing, and the bezel above the screen shrinking down.

If I hadn't seen Apple strip the iPod Nano of features and quality for the sake of touch and size, I wouldn't believe this rumor.

But I pretty have to.

problem with this is the smart phone will eventually be cheap and all the cheap phones you see today will be like looking at a Motorola star tac today

Cult of Mac out to lunch

No permanent storage, total cloud based storage? I don't think so. This would not work in so, so many situations.

This can't be possible. If we rely on cloud-based content, we would have to rely on some sort of data connection. For most of us that has limited data we wouldn't go very far into the month with this iPhone and getting Wi-Fi access everywhere isn't easy.

LOL seriously, what are you angry about?

why is it difficult to see how an ipod touch is equipped? I sent you a link of how to add a sim card to an ipod touch and it's only $89. if you cut out storage, made the device smaller and not as high quality camera etc. it can easily be had for $200.

Adding a sim card and antenna and making it a phone does not cost another $300.

ipod touch already has a camera all it needs is a sim and antenna, which does NOT cost $300.

Well I might get angry if you continue not to make any sense. :D

Apple can't even make a $200 Ipod touch. And somehow you think they can make a $200 Touch with voice and 3g data etc? Wake up.

There's a difference between reality and delusion.

The cloud part of the rumor is bogus. Makes absolutely no sense.

See anyone not wanting a smartphone doesn't want one because you have to pay the expensive monthly plan.

A phone that streams all your crap to your phone means you need a data plan which means you are paying the same amount of money per month as a Iphone 4 which means it makes no sense when a 3gs is 0-$100 or a refurb Iphone 4 is $100-$150 roughly speaking.

So what's the point? To pay the same amount of money and get a ******** phone? Bah.

Plus all the cellular carriers are limiting 3g bandwidth. You don't get unlimited bandwidth now. Did you look at how much bandwidth they allow now for your $30? Is it 2 gigs? Yeah that will be great for a streaming cloud mini-iPHone.

Let's not talk about all the other hassles of a streaming phone.

Makes no sense. Plus 8gb of flash memory isn't a big expense at this point.

Nah any Iphone Nano is going to be a different product. and not a cloud streaming one.

To get a $200 unsubsidized pricepoint it would have to a feature phone-ish type of product - Apple style. Even then not sure that is possible.

Question is if there are enough people that would buy such a feature stripped device? It would work in less places than the iPods .... Apple usually does not make niche products for just a few people.

Im sure that Apples market research has the answers, just because a few people on a Mac rumours forum think it is a bad idea doesn‘t actually make it so, I agree that Apple does not cater for low volume markets, but I am sure that they will be better informed on how few or large the numbers of consumers that would purchase the product are, that is of course, unless you have access to market research already conducted on the subject.

no $200 ipod touch? wow OK it's $229, only $29 more that is just crazy!!

again, you are speaking in terms of a CONTRACT SUBSIDIZED phone. why is this so hard to grasp? The real price of an iphone 4 is $599. AT&T and verizon do what they call "SUBSIDIZE" since you are required to pay for data to make it more realistic for you to purchase it. Make sense now?

I know several people that have iPod touch that can be purchased at apple store for $229 and Amazon for around $200, which has a camera, 8gb storage and wifi. They can do apps, email, play music, heck even make calls over VOIP and do text messaging through google voice. ALL for just $200-$229. No data plan or contract to do so.

Apple... Just do a half sized retina display (480x320) (1.75in Diag)

And all of the old 1G, 2G, 3G, 3GS, Apps will work perfect.

K.I.S.S

Let's hope this is just a rumor. First of all, I'm not interested in a smaller iPhone, the iPhone screen should be LARGER not smaller. And secondly who is going to pay for all this data when you sync to the cloud? AT&T only give me a piddly 200 megabyte. No thanks.

This is completely the wrong direction that Apple should be heading...If anything, I'd love a BIGGER screened iPhone with 64 GB.

Tony

100% agree. I want a 4" - 4.3" iPhone. That is the only thing missing that has me eyeballing the HTC Desire HD...'cept for that Android nonsense.

You didn't read my post. You make no sense. ARgue with yourself as that is what you seem to be doing. Please don't click "Quote" next time. Thank you.

When I read this my first thought is a dumbed-down iPhone is just that a dumb, regular cellphone.

If Apple should realy try this, and I highly doubt that, they will be in a much more saturated market then with the iPhone. Back then there were all the components available and ready to be put together. There were phones with touchscreen before, but most used a pen-type device prone to getting lost. there were excellent smartphones with great business value, but they lacked the ease of use or required massive investments (blackberry server for example)

But no apps and no storage means this will be one of many dumb phones and most of them are realy good at what they do + given the large screen of the concepts they will simply kill an iPhone nano when it comes to battery life.

Just my thoughts, but please apple, this sounds like a bad move to me...and I would very much like my stocks not to crash until I retire :D

lol how did i not read your post? you for some reason don't think there is an ipod touch that costs around $200 that does the stuff i mentioned.

man, how do you get through the day with a brain like that.

wow! it's revolutionary!!

even comes with a $10 gift card and camera :D

Why this will not happen..

The magic of the apple tv is that you have all your stuff stored on your mobile iOS device and can steam it to the apple tv. The only way this iPhone with no storage would be true is if you had data streamed from the cloud, but recent posts on this site explain why Apple is not likely to offer everyone that, especially for free..
