I believe I now know why AAPL produced this.

AAPL will offer it for FREE to the cellular carriers, & they will offer it as a FREE Perk to try to entice potential customers to pull trigger on a new XR, XS, or XS Max.

And, it's actually NOT a bad idea.

Priced @ $129 USD, but with a COG of << $29 USD !

So, at most it costs AAPL $29 per sale.

You heard it here first !

that would be genius! and a 'new year' promo free smart case with any XS/XR/Max

now you're making some strategical sense out of this non strategy

You cant make a sound argument to applaud Apple for being transparent in screwing over customers imo. Thats nuts. Hold them more accountable than basking in their mediocrity and outright unacceptable conduct and hostility towards their loyal fans. At least, you should. If you dont, you get what they serve: they ship crap.

Because XS is physically very similar to X, is all the more reason to be baffled why they wouldnt allow it -- especially since it can be done, its just nixed by software limitations

It isnt even a frigging 3rd party non-MFI accessory; its Apple's!
The X and XS look similar from an aesthetic point of view. Doesn’t mean they are similar from an engineering point of view. Apple intentionally making it not work for no reason makes zero sense. No X owner is going to buy an XS just so they can then spend $129 on a battery case. So there’s either an engineering reason it doesn’t work or something in software that needs to be tweaked. Of course instead of trying to get an answer from Apple the internet goes into full Apple is evil fire Tim Cook outrage mode.

Thats exactly why people are upset. It simply doesnt make sense. You want there to be a complicated engineering explanation, because you cant accept that Apple doesnt ever make rash decisions, but I can.

Id love to hear people staying on 12.1.2 and getting the battery case use it for years, without fault, wireless charging or otherwise, and then have others be like "THERE MUST BE A REASON!"

Y'all don't understand how the case functions. I have iPhone 8 case and I use it all the time. The case is designed to not fry your battery like a lame Mohpie case. Mophies have ruined every battery I'ved used it with. I also get a longer run time out of the Apple case vs the Mophie's larger capacity. The Apple Case has a chip in it that regulates charging and dissipating. Makes the phone think it is connected to a wall socket so it regulates the battery different.

Shouldn’t there be a notch in that screenshot?
I think the image is behind the notch so it is still captured.

If this were a logical discussion, we could readily conclude that you're merely describing two separate groups of complainers, and no further explanation would really be necessary.

That said... this is the internet. Those seeking to actually make sense of the discussions herein are more oft' than not going to be disappointed. ;)
My guess is many of them are the same group of complainers. But mostly it’s just the outrage culture. But it’s stupid because why would Apple intentionally turn down $129 from customers? No one can honestly believe Tim Cook thinks a $129 battery case is going to get people to upgrade their phone.

For people who got this case already, how did you get it so quickly? In-store pickup and shipping show Monday the 21st.

OK so how about MacRumors or Rene Ritchie or whomever reach out to Apple to get an explanation?

Ok where were all these complaints about Apple not offering a battery case for the X prior to this week (or today)? All of a sudden Apple is the most evil company in the world because a case not designed for the X might not work with the X?
Nope they aren't evil to me for not offering a case, however this argument was originally out there when X was released. People wanted a battery case then but didn't get one. Today just opened a fresh wound.

How about it? That sure would be interesting wouldnt it? When they decline to comment it must be because the engineering explanation is too complicated for us common folk.

OR

It's probably going to be as satisfying as their 400 micron tolerance explanation for bent iPads out of the box 'with higher tolerances than any other generation'

gobble it up

I mean I dont care from a personal perspective, I dont even have an X anymore, but doesnt change that I think its crappy behavior. Just like I'm not in the market for a $1000+ 12.9 2018, but doesnt make it any less crappy the explanation is "our amazing tolerances are why you're looking at it wrong"

Gruber-types that get all the perks by not batting an eye, were satisfied with that explanation, I was not. Its been a minute since I've been positively influenced by a reality distortion field statement of theirs. LIke batterygate. The technical explanation didnt negate that they lacked transparency, and as a result of 10-11 million battery replacements last year up from 1, that may have been the reason for people not upgrading as often when explaining to shareholders... so if people knew their crappy performance was from crap batteries, maybe they wouldnt have upgraded in previous years either. You see how this is just not cool?

I hope longtime MacRumors readers realize how pitiful it is when the big news out of Apple is a PHONE CASE. Why oh why can't a trillion dollar company innovate any longer?!

I’ve kept the iPhone X (recently used AppleCare+ for a replacement) and I’ve been hoping to see a Smart Battery Case for some time now. I’m not going to gamble $129 on future compatibility with Apple’s XS case.

Also worth reminding, Mophie will be releasing the Juice Pack Access soon (http://www.mophie.com/shop/battery-cases/juice-pack-access-iphone-xs). As of right now, they still advertise compatibility with the iPhone X (screenshot attached).

I got my battery changed at Apple while they were still doing batteries for $29. My X lasts all day again.
Apple is upset that they couldn’t get you to upgrade instead of battery replacement and don’t want to help to extend life for x’s with smart case.
