Apple has lost their edge since Steve Jobs passed away. Save your money and buy a compatible 4000mAh iPhone X case from inDmird for $18.99...it looks waaaay better than Apple's design as well!

Apple is upset that they couldn’t get you to upgrade instead of battery replacement and don’t want to help to extend life for x’s with smart case.
So then they get no money from you. Yep I’m sure that was Tim Cook’s plan all along. One minute the battery case is ugly and underpowered the next people are up in arms because this ugly and underpowered case doesn’t work with their model of iPhone.

So is Apple's battery case better than the one Mophie is releasing soon or what?
I’ve been partial to the Apple models because they’re seamless (e.g., no power on/off button, Lightning port), and the fit/finish is typical Apple quality. When using the Apple Smart Battery Case, the Case battery runs down first before the iPhone battery starts being depleted (or the Case will top off the iPhone battery’s charge first if the iPhone is not fully charged).

The Mophie uses an on/off switch and charges via USB-C, however the latest models include wireless charging (like the Apple Case), and the Juice Pack Access (to be released in the coming months) also allows access to the iPhone Lightning port. Definitely some very attractive new features coming from Mophie.

I prefer the apple version for a couple of reasons:
1. No management of the case - as previously noted, it charges when its on your phone and still has capacity.
2. The case itself supports USB C power delivery.
3. It plugs in to your phone (the mophie charges your phone via wireless charging which will be slower and less efficient.
4. While the mophie has not been released, it appears to be larger overall (it has a larger overall battery but I expect this to not translate to any additional charging capacity due to being less efficient due to the wireless charging)

The only downside for me is that I really like the idea of charging the case with a USB C cable vs. lightning. But I can accept that.

what I posted in the other thread:

The apple battery cases act like an extended battery for the phone instead of a charger. They report their charge level in iOS as well. The charging and discharging is automatically managed instead of having to turn on the charging like on third party cases. The problem with waiting until your internal battery draining before switching on the external battery is that it uses up a charge cycle on the internal battery. If you can keep the internal battery close to full for longer then you can extended its useful service life.

Another smart feature is that the Apple battery cases don't trigger the "I'm plugged into a wall" power profiles in iOS. This means that even though the smart battery case is charging the phone it won't trigger actions like iCloud backup, photo uploads, photo analysis, etc... which drain your battery like crazy.

Aftermarket battery cases like Mophie or other cheap ones just act like a battery bank or a normal wall charger. The phone has no idea its running off a second battery. So it will behave like you are at home plugged into the wall.

You also won't find fully functional lightning ports on third party battery cases. The ones that have lightning ports will only charge. No data or audio pass through. The apple battery cases always behaved like the native lightning port on the phone.

Personally I like the USB C connector on the mophie version since the iphone is the last device i own that doesnt use USB C for charging. However since the new apple battery case can charge wirelessly I am not as annoyed.

This is just like the Apple Folio case for the X versus the Xs. Either case will fit either phone - but, and this is the gotcha, opening the flap does not turn on the screen - if using a case made for the X on the Xs. There are hall switches in the iPhone, activated by magnets in the cases. Apple moved the locations (yes, plural) of the hall switches inside the Xs when they redesigned it......
I really wanted the screen to come on when I open the flap. I "upgraded" from the X to the Xs, but I discovered I had to buy a new folio case in order for this feature to work on the Xs. I think it is called maximum profit from their customer base.... but I still bought one. Ugh.

I know it's not as simple as slapping on a slightly different shell and putting a different sticker on the box, but making a version to work with the iPhone X would have been trivial, and they could have made a limited production run to test the market. I've really liked the functionality of the Apple Smart Battery cases (so much better than anything Morphie has ever offered), and this one is even better, but the increased price and likely lousy durability of the silicon outer shell make it a lot less attractive. Still, if I needed maximum batter power in the smallest form factor, and I needed an iPhone, I'd get this and deal with the ill-fit, or "upgrade" to an iPhone XS.

Looks like trash to me. Sorry.
How on earth this is better? I don't get it. You can place an iPhone on a stand to watch a video but to do so you have to take off the cap of the case. Seriously? Why don't they suggest you to use a shoe of your neighbour to do so?

Just be aware...

I agree - I went to buy a black leather iPhone X case a little while back and can’t find any on the Apple site. It really is a slap in the face to X owners. Heck you can still buy cases for older iPhones direct from Apple.

I agree this is ridiculous .

On eBay there are some amazing "Apple OEM" leather cases for all the phones. I have some for almost every phone, they are really high quality

One of the Amazon generic cases made by Newdery claim lightning pass-through. It was cheap enough that I didn't think it was too much of a risk to try. Shockingly it works for both audio, data, and CarPlay. I wouldn't update or backup through it but it works

I did not know this, thank you!

Kudos to The Verge for updating their headline/article.

Oh nice! Im gonna check that case out.

Given the Quasimodo look of the cases I will opt for no anyway. What was Apple thinking with these? Did Jony Ives take a day off?

Yeah, I just don’t understand these battery cases, even after trying one. Seems like a generic USB battery is still way better—doesn’t increase the thickness of my iPhone, can charge any device I want, and is way less expensive. Why carry around the case in your pocket even when you don’t need the extra power?

It’s also a very “un-Apple” product—if I’m using this case, I don’t want to think about the charge level of the phone and the battery case separately. The software should just merge the charges of the phone and case and report the total as one number whenever the case is attached.

So glad I'm using the Note 9. Switched in December.

It has a 4000 mAh battery and it easily lasts all day even if the screen is very bright, using bluetooth, gps etc etc.
Still have 65-70 % left when I go to bed....lol At this very moment it's on 70% and it's 12:16 am. Since this morning at 8 am.

Apple is making a vastly inferior device for astronomical prices and then they charge us more so it can function properly.

You would expect a trillion dollar company could get their act together and make a phone with big enough battery that lasts all day no matter how you use the phone.
But this is better for them.
Just charge install a super cheap minuscule battery (maybe even slow down our phones too) and then charge millions of people extra 130 bucks so they can use their phone all day.

As someone who owned the X (upgraded to the XS), this is unbelievable.

I cannot understand the rationale for the software block of this. If someone is willing to spend $129 on it and they’re a X owner, I just cannot fathom why this makes any sense.
Apple is not selling it as “X” compatible because it doesn’t fit exactly. In order to limit the bad press of people complaining or being confused or whatever when the battery case doesn’t fit the old model, they simply disabled the problem with software.

Very Apple solution. Is anyone really surprised by this? I’m not.

“vastly inferior“...methinks you’re going a bit too far by calling it “vastly inferior.”

I’m not going to be one those idiots who says “show you work!” or “citation please?” I’m not going to go into chip bench marking either, because I’m sure you realize “vastly inferior” is just hyperbole. Right?

Terrible reporting...look at the first page comments.

Might want to verify sources and use facts before reporting nonsense to fire up the community more.

With so many "tech bloggers" and rumour sites (+ Twitter) fighting to be first, I'm afraid we're in the "publish now, check later" era.
