Works for me on my iPad
It doesn't make sense to me, that Apple would turn this off during the beta stage, especially one that it made public. I have a feeling that they are going to change the list of devices that can make use of this feature or more narrowly define the extent of its use amongst the various devices.
That is a concerning thought. If they were to exclude the iPad 2 and older MacBooks I will be furious. It worked so well before that I can't imagine they are actually doing that though.
Worked for me on on my iPad and MacBook Pro up until late yesterday, now not receiving SMS on either anymore.
Same here. My iPad and MacBook Air no longer receive SMS messages.
And they won't until October with an update to iOS 8.
Me to. At least I can send and receive calls my MBP and iPad Air and I still have handoff from the iPhone 5 to the iPad Air. So, I can get by until October. I just wish my MBP could do handoff. Alas, with it being a late 2011 it didn't make the cut.I wish they'd leave it on for those of us already on Yosemite and iOS 8.
After the DP8 1.0 update today...the SMS function went awayYeah, the release notes mention iOS 8 update being needed. Probably due to the current 8 and Yosemite not being in tandem with one another

Update:
From the DP 8 release notes...
Handoff Known Issue
- Using Handoff to pass an untitled TextEdit document between two Macs may not work. Saving the document first and waiting 5-10 seconds before attempting Handoff may resolve this issue.
SMS Note
- SMS Continuity is not currently available for testing. It will be available in October via a free update to iOS 8.

Mine stopped working last night. My iPhone crashed and rebooted. I then had issues getting it to recognize my SIM card.
After that, I no longer got SMS messages on my iPad.
Hey Guys!
I finally got it figured out! After changing two airport cards on my mac and resetting my iPhone and iPad, I finally found the problem to the SMS relay bug where you can receive SMS on your iOS8/yosemite devices but cannot send SMS except from your iPhone.
You need to enable receiving iMessages on your iPhone using your iCloud login.
Settings -> Messages -> Send & Receive -> You can be reached by iMessage at: "username@icloud.com" needs to be selected.
As soon as I selected this I was able to text using my iPad Mini Retina.
This also worked for me after enabling my iCloud address on both macbook and iPhone.
