Is everyone on stupid pills again? How can you possibly get 20+GB back when your system and apps folder don't even add up to that size?

That's the thing. I been using monolingual to remove all the extra languages and non intel executables from my apps (which freed up roughly 3GB) and I still got back 8 gigs (converted correctly) after installing SL. A GB or two may have been swap space for me though. SL seems to keep Safari RAM usage lower for me.

NEW FIND (I think): you can quick look your print jobs from your printer list.

Right, in Snow Leopard you are getting SOME space back. But not the 20+GB that these perfectly functioning intelligent posters are saying.

Uh, yea, I did get a good amount of space back. Not 20 GB but definitely double digits.

And the Applications folder not adding up to 20 GB? Um...check the picture.

Wasn't there a rumor at one point that SL might introduce file system compression? That could certainly explain some of the larger amounts some of us are seeing.

Do the math though, even with a discrepancy between GB and GiB, the difference most see would be less than a single gigabyte. So someone in the double digits is still in the double digits. Just cause you can't understand how it can happen, doesn't mean it can't. Heck, most people don't understand how their plumbing works, but the water still flows.

I think Bertrand Serlet said there was some file system compression. Whatever that is. I'll have to watch some of the keynote, which, perhaps coincidentally (but probably not), I have on my HDD (man, it's huge, 1.5 GB).

EDIT: Yup, Bertrand said, "Over 6 GB more space, thanks to technologies like file system compression."

But it seems like most people are doing the math wrong. They're calculating the difference between GB and GiB on only the amount saved, not the entire drive.

For example, a hypothetical 300 GB drive used to display as ~279.4 GB in leopard, a difference of 20.6 GB. That's a lot more than a single gigabyte. After upgrading to snow leopard that person probably now has ~25 GB more free space than before depending on how they had installed leopard, but the majority of "saved" space can be attributed to the new way in which snow leopard is counting that space.

The password window now says "Incorrect name or password" in red when you type in the wrong password.

TUAW is reporting that if you have a displayport to HDMI adapter, hooking 10.6 up to a HDTV gives HD options - 720p, 1080i, 1080p:

Nice big icons, HDTV resolutions, more multitouch friendly...(e.g. in expose, if you left click and hold a window, it won't go to that one, just select it. So if you were using a finger to select, as long as it' still touching the screen, you can swap between the windows in the expose view, or move to bank space to deselect anything).

Think this + a Mac mini/ATV Take 3 could be a winner? Wifi gaming via such a box, using iPhones would be pretty darn neat...

I've read all the 13 pages and I'm pretty sure this has not been reported. Disk utility now shows more details when repairing permissions.

The screenshot says "The permissions for "private/etc/postfix/main.cf.default, -r--r--r--differ from -rw-r--r-- and are repaired."

Btw, this and another SUID file were the only "faulty" set permissions.

Huge improvement, and I love SL so far. Thanks to the others for the helpful hidden surprises.

Hidden Features of snow leopard

Lets post some features that aren't well advertised about snow leopard (screen shots please.

First one I noticed was the presence of a battery warning (since my battery is profoundly ruined).

I also noticed the contextual menu's for the dock are quite more ubiquitous than I expected.

Also apparently expose includes minimized windows as part of the selection.

that would be called dock expose, it is not a hidden feature.

and have you ever right clicked on system preferences in the dock? it's been there for a while.

A for effort

i didn't see this in there but the battery no longer turns red when under a 25% charge, it has to be lower to turn red now

I've found two more thingy's:

First ss: In Mail, there are more sorting criteria. From left to right: (Not all of them are new, but you know that ;) )

- unread mail
- flag
- arrows (they sure mean if a mail is answered, forwarded, etc.)
- number, obviously (didn't figure out that one yet)
- Online status (iChat)
- sender
- recipient
- topic
- last backup
- received
- read on

Second ss: In Leopard, when you had nothing in your Downloads folder and you clicked on the folder in stack, it used to open an Finder window. Now, it only shows "Show in Finder" and no Finder window appears in the first place.

I also noticed this change and I'm loving it. I have my Downloads folder set to just show the folder icon and it really annoyed me when it opened up the Downloads folder in Finder because all I really wanted to know was if there was anything it it.
