I love all the people clamoring on the first page about how they're not going to use this, even though it's not out yet and it is not even feature complete yet.

Try to be MORE reactionary, simpletons.

Snapz Pro is a dinosaur that has been shown zero love by Ambrosia for years and is in no way worth its purchase price. I can see native capture functionality in Snow Leopard making Snapz Pro completely irrelevant....

where's the love? SnapZProX has done everything i've wanted from it--I print screen grabs, email still or video grabs, save to the clipboard, maintain a list of recent files so i can save directly to them, etc. If Snow Leopard does make it irrelevant, I'll still honor it for the service it's done me for several years now, enabling me to do things Apple did not.

Apple Podcast Capture / Podcast Server

Apple Podcast Capture / Podcast Server in leopard has done Screen Recording.

i guess apple is juts bringing it to every one.

i dont know alot about development but, apple has API's for application to record what the screen is doing. witch most application use ScreenFlow etc. . .

but ScreenFlow offers alot more than just recording the screen, it lets you edit alot easier then Quicktime X.

I freaking hope this will be good. I love my Screenflow and it could not be better. If Apple is going to kill that wonderful app, Apple's screencasting should be even better than it or I'll be really pissed. Cause Screenflow is an amazing piece of software.

It won't be as good as screeenflow. Apple will give you basic features and a good couple of special effects no one thought of. It is more than likely for people who aren't going to pay $100 for screenflow. it is probably meant for the average user who doesn't require too much. Why put quality 3rd party publishers out of business?

Agreed, IF this feature sticks around in its current form. I highly doubt there will be any video recording allowed (or at LEAST restricted by DRM). Why everyone is so hysterically excited is beyond me. Apple is known for locking simple features out of things. The easiest example is video recording on the iPhone (although it works flawlessly on my jailbroken iphone).

It works flawlessly eh, I wonder why others who have done it saying its garbage.

good news...

I'd say this is good news all around...

I love Screenflow, and IMO it was worth the $100.

But if Apple builds screencasting/video screen recording capabilities into SL (more specifically, I'd guess into Quicktime, as part of the previous news about Quicktime Pro becoming the free standard in SnowLeopard)... it may be possible that developers of these type of apps (such as Screenflow) are compelled to add new/better features to their apps, making them more powerful in terms of effects, editing, etc.

Well... that's what I'd hope for, anyway: more competition = better products.

I had to build a tutorial on a sofware product for internal communication recently and after a lot of research and trial downloads trying standard recording and then attempting to edit in iMovie/FCE etc. I eventually settled on ScreenFlow.

It. Is. An. Awesome. Product.
Being able to edit within the product is very convenient and most importantly the quality of output is superb compared to the two-step process of screen recording and then editing the output in another product.

Two things would improve it for me:
1. Being able to record just the active window rather than the whole screen would be nice.
2. Have the actions 'connect' clips (ala iMovie) rather than sit inside them in the edit panel. Its just that when you have small clips it all gets a bit 'tight' trying to finetune edit the actions

...and honestly I was struggling to come up with those negatives.

If Apple can create something that - I guess - integrates with or mimics the editing/scrubbing paradigm of iMovie and has flexible screen recording (full screen/active window etc.) then yes, this will be awesome addition to OSX.

I suspect however it will do a basic recording function very well and possibly over time additional features will be added, meaning for a while at least ScreenFlow will remain a key app for many.

By way of example look at Rapidweaver. Great product and a number of us expected/hoped Apple would buy them but instead iWeb appeared. After a number of versions iWeb is beginning to be very cool but in my opinion Rapidweaver is still by far the better choice and continues to have a loyal following. I'm guessing the new proposed screen recording function and ScreenFlow will follow the same pattern.

Why would a recording feature constitute anti trust allegations?

if MS designs and includes a program that performs a similar function as a third party MS is stiffling competition. Then they are accused in copying the other company.

If apple does it you hear the hoorays and its called innovation

This is unlikely to be in the final version, it could just be there for developers to show off their new software and demonstrate it to investors ahead of Snow Leopard's release.

Snapz Pro is a dinosaur...
As for Screenflow, on the other hand...no way. This is a fully-featured app with a great interface.

I have to disagree... after using both Screenflow and Snapz, I find Snapz far superior. Snapz allows me to create a video for a specific region or object on the screen, Screenflow only allows you to capture the entire screen. Screenflow also produced garbled audio and Snapz produced perfect files. I have purchased both but Snapz is the only one I use regularly.

Cliff.

Where have I seen this kind of move before?

I find this more than just a little curious. Thee are already fine third party programs that will do this. Why "step on toes" at all? Why not just leave things as they are? Sounds absolutely like something megalomaniac Microsoft would do. That concerns me somehow.

Rich

Now that Windows 7 has gone RC, I think we'll be seeing many more of this "new" features of SL. Let's hope anyway.

I've been using Séquence and that application is okay, but Apple could do way better. I would like to see what Apple brings into play with their screen recording. :)
