I compared my friends new 2.0 alu Macbook with my Blackbook and honestly I see very little difference with the screen quality overall and he agreed with me. We tested it on 2 movies and a few colorful websites. Hopefully when I buy the new Macbook next year they will have a better screen in it. Then again both the new one and old one screens are fine for what I do, but I do understand why people demand higher hardware from Apple considering we are paying a lot for it. They should be doing better on the screens.

Some say they like the reg Macbook because it weighs less and has a smaller footprint (I think many just can't afford the Pro, but that is my opinion). I'm a girl and I can easily tote this Pro anywhere. An additional pound in weight and a slightly bigger footprint doesn't bother me, so it is hard for me to imagine how it can be for a man.

Without even commenting on the screen debate - I returned my Pro for a MB. It was not because of money. I had no trouble affording the Pro. I'm not sure why people have to act superior about owning a Pro over a MB. It doesn't mean you're richer, cooler, smarter, etc etc. So get over it. I have a custom built desktop that I use for graphics, games, HD editing - and it blows the MBP's puny 9600M out of the water. I also had a last-gen MBP for awhile. Some people just want portability, end of story. It was a fairly big difference between the new MBP and the new MB. It's a pound of weight, but also the MBP was wider than even my old MBP. When you carry a computer around all day every day, it does matter.

Holy crap, give it a freakin' rest. You're like a damn broken record. Everyone knows how you feel, you don't need to chime in every single time someone says something positive about their screen.

If I had a dollar for every time she's overused the word "crapbook," I'd buy an island in the Caribbean. I know she thinks the phrase is catchy, but it's been seriously driven into the ground, post after post.

Then put me on ignore, genius. If people keep claiming things that are untrue (like the new one's screen is FAR better than the old one--which is a lie--I know it makes the new alu Macbook owners like you feel better thinking that, but it isn't true) I will give my opinions also. If you don't like it then ignore me. It is mostly the same people saying how great the new screen is, so it works both ways. Use ignore.

I'm sorry, but we just disagree there. I can look at my 2Ghz BlackBook side by side with the Aluminum MacBook, and the Aluminum's screen is better. It's brighter, crisper, and more pleasing to my eye. Of course the MBP screen is better. It always has been and likely always will be. I'm not sure what the point of lying would be.

I compared my aluminum macbook to a macbook purchased in july and the screens on the new macbooks are brighter, less "dull" looking...a tad better viewing angles, and blacks were pretty much the same. Better on the aluminum macbook though but not by much

give it a rest guys. We all know the pro has a better screen and has a "better" price too.

the new macbook's screen is MUCH better than the previous in terms of brightness and clarity. Be real here guys, how much of your daily use of this machine is with dark colors? Blacks are not the best, but its adquate for the normal consumer.

My suggestion to everyone on the borderline is to not read this forum and go see it yourself. For most, the screen will meet their expectations.

Some help to reduce confusion

Hi to all, this is my first post here, so I greet you all.
I read at lenght about this crappy display and I have to thank you all for the time spent in writing all theese posts that helped me to address issues on the alMB.
After reading you I went to my local dealer where I bought all my computers since the apple II age.
Being a privileged customer they allowed me to take a MB home for 24 hours, so I could take a close look at this machine and its crappy display.

Well I have to state that it is NOT so crappy.

Many people here, are looking for answers and don't have the opportunity to lay hand on a MB as I did, so they need a non biased opinion as IMHO I think mine could be.

First thing I'm a photographer, so I usually have to do with pics and colors and so I think I can have a stand on some questions.

Folks have to know what they are and what they want.

1) You can't do without perfection?
then forget the MB, it ain't for you.

2) you want a great machine with a great screen and it doesn't bother you if you have to keep it in the right position in front of you?
then go for the MB, it won't disappoint you

Right folks, this display ain't so bad to see as some keep saying, it is bad indeed for the ones that are used to better ones like MBP's, and they seem to be so many only 'cause if they feel something is wrong they come and complain here (AND THEY ARE RIGHT TO, 'cause the MB is very pricey), but the vast majority of happy MB owners are not coming here and you'll never hear from them.

As I said I'm a photographer and since I sold my share in my company 2 years ago and started to work at home, I found out that sitting on my sofa, with my feet propped up and my MB on my lap, maybe with music or TV on, is a very beautiful way of working.
To be able to work this way though, I had to adjust my habits and learn to make do with the WMB I own now. It was different and a downgrade from the G5 but in time I made it work and the G5 sits in my nearly unused studio.
If my confortable solution affected my work quality or if I am one who can't tell good from bad , you can say by yourself (here's my pics : "http://www.biellasposi.com/Biella_Sposi_foto/benvenuto.html"),

If I could stick to the WMB I think that most people can.

About the ones that compare the MB with the PCs , I can say that nobody is in love with apple hardware as much as with apple OSX wich is absolutely incomparable to any version of windows.
Anyway, the unibody, the trackpad, the design, the semplicity and most of the rest are valuable assets.

Thank you all for listening, I hope my 2c can help somebody as you did for me.

BTW: I ordered a MB 2.4

I agree. The people who own the new one will defend it of course and say it is better than the previous gen one and others who own the other laptops will do the same. EVERYONE has their own biases. Go look for yourself. As I said above, my friend who owns a new 2.0 alu Macbook compared it to my Blackbook and there was no difference in quality in the screens. I do find it funny some on here who own the new one say it is much better, but everyone is entitled to their own opinions and biases. I just didn't see it at all and I like the new ones and plan on buying it next year when Snow Leopard/new upgrades/hopefully new screen/and maybe a new intel chip comes out in it. If anything the blacks are MUCH better on the previous gen than the new ones in my opinion.

Don't take "good enough" if you are paying for "better".
It really is a bad screen for the money. Really bad.

It is a relative statement, for the money it should be better than my 3 year old cheap Evesham (have you even heard of them?), and it isn't.

It is EASILY useable in everyday situations, but I'm paying £1150 which is not everyday money, so it better kick arse in all situations.

Saying stuff like "how often do you even look at a black screen!??!" is just chumpish crap that makes people like Steve Jobs wet their pants with excitment whilst you pay top whack for a screen he probably got for half the price that Dell would pay to put a decent one in.

I boot up Vista and it looks like brain-matter grey all across the bottom and black at the top. Once you have seen this you will notice the dock is washed out.
I watch movies all the time on laptops, and there is usually a black bar top and bottom. Well, I say a black bar top and bottom, I mean a grey bar at the bottom and a black one at the top.

Clyde:

Yes it was well worth returning the new alu Macbook for the new Macbook Pro. I didn't pay an additional $700 for it. Remember the new Macbook 2.4 is $1599 and the new Macbook Pro starts at $1999. I only paid $400 difference to get it. Well, well, well worth it. The benefits of the Pro far outweigh the small additional weight, cost, and footprint anyways IMO (price compared to the new 2.4). I carried it a long way yesterday on campus. My classes on campus are spread out and I have to climb a lot of hills and stairs. I didn't see much difference between the Pro and carrying the alu Macbook I returned. I think it is just an excuse, but oh well to each their own.

The Pro is light years ahead of the reg Macbook in the screen. There is no comparison and to try is stupid. I compared the new Macbook I returned along with my friends new alu Macbook and to a few of our friends cheap PC's laptop screens and that was the final straw. I could not live with the new alu Macbook knowing it had a cheap screen and was worse than way cheaper PC's laptops. I owned a Blackbook before this and I don't care what a few of the new Macbook owners say, the last gen Macbook's screen was slightly better. Apple should of put a quality screen in the new one to complement the new graphic chip, but they put a good graphic chip in it with a horrible screen. It makes no sense other than them ripping people off because it is the "in" thing to buy a Mac. I have owned Mac's for the last 10 years and I have never been as disappointed as I was when I bought the new alu macbook. Current and future owners of the new Macbook should demand Apple do better on the screens (calibration doesn't work that much, I tried 3 different programs--it was the poor screen--I tested it on my friends new one along with several at the store--some were slightly better, but still horrible for that amount of money). Instead of defending the screens and Apple, people need to make their feelings known. When I returned my alu Macbook the Apple Store manager told me they have had a large number of returns with the new Macbook primarily because of the poor quality of the screens. He also said all the stores in his district are experiencing the same high rate of returns on it. It isn't just people on here complaining, but others as well. If I paid less than a $1000 on it, I could of accepted that screen, but it is unacceptable when you pay that much money and get a below average screen. Like I said earlier, current owners do need to hold Apple to a higher standard because they pay a premium for it. I think many of the new alu owners are taking this thing way to emotional and personal. It isn't. Many people, especially those of us who have been Mac owners for years, are mad that Apple put a poor quality screen in a otherwise really nice laptop. Write letters, email Apple, and complain to the managers at the Apple stores. If enough people complain they might change the screen and make it better for people. People who pay that amount of money deserve at least a decent screen that can show black when it is black.

It's hilarious to see people act like they are on the right side of this argument and sending Apple a message by giving them another $400 for a different Apple laptop. And it's even better to see you snobbily making judgements on why people chose the MB, when you bought it yourself.

Time to start posting on the MB Pro boards and annoying them- goodbye now.

I find it funny people have to respond to her because they don't like her opinions when all they have to do is what she said--put her on ignore if you don't want to read her comments. She is entitled to her opinions like everyone else and while she repeats them a lot, so do many of the same posters, time after time after time. I do as well so I'm not judging.

ok, here is a picture I took tonight of my aluminium MB, I took it with a Nikon D40 in raw format so I could adjust the White Balance for the LED light.

It's a scene from the movie "Collateral".

to me blacks are as good as hey should be on a average LCD monitor.

Looks good panzaman!. Which panel you got..? Any particular color profile you using?

HAHAHA, the top of that shot has TERRIBLE negative colours, and the bottom bar is greyish.
Also, this should not be an average laptop, it is not costing an average amount. Face it the blacks on the Macbook monitor (ANY of the variants available) are, at best, well below what they would be on a laptop of half the cost.

..and this is the "infamous" Steve's Keynote shot in which he is supposed to be looking like a "floating head in space"....

My panel is 9C8C and the color profile is the "Spider Pro" that I have downloaded from one of the threads in this forum.

Can you not see the difference in colour between the bottom and top of his black top?

Also, show an image with black at the top too, because at an angle good enough to get the bottom to be as black as it is there (still not amazing) the top blacks will have inverted/negative themselves.

why not grab your own d90 and take some pics or video for yourself?

Because if people are going to say that Panzaman's shots show anything than AWFUL variation in blacks top to bottom, there is no point as no one would understand what I was showing.

And also I sent mine back, I don't care how nice Steve Jobs is, if he tries to **** me with a **** screen for my £1150 he can have the damn thing back.

..yes of course you'll have a difference between the bottom and top of the image that's due to the fact that the LCD is backlit from the bottom up.

All LCDs have this particular problem, is called "light bleeding", some score better some score worse.

I am not saying that the panel is the best you can have etc. I am just saying that is average and it is fine for this class of laptop which is mainly going to be used for browsing, light photo re-touch etc., university notes and assignements. A pro, with the needs of a pro, would fork out other £500 pounds and buy a MacBook Pro.

I love your username. :D

Also, true enough - it's ironic to act superior over MB users when she opted for one herself. Excuse me, "crapbook" users.

Yes indeed. This effect is very visible in the tab bar of Safari.

I'm now on a MBA that does not have this problem.

Are you on the MBA 2.0? or the first gen one?

I want to know if there's a difference between the 2.0 screen and the 1.0.

The fact is, when you buy a name brand product such as Apple or Sony or Pioneer, you expect quality components. Whether you can see the components or not.

The old addage "you get what you pay for" comes to mind right now. I paid a premium for this laptop. I feel I got a premium laptop, except the screen. I didn't expect a MBP quality screen, but a screen better than a $500 Dell was expected.

Would you pay $1300 for a $500 Dell wrapped in aluminum?
