I am in awe to be surrounded by so many rich people that can afford a new phone each year. I tip my hat to you good sirs...

To OP, let me fast forward to Friday for you...

1 - You buy the iPhone 5s

2 - You spend 10-15 minutes playing with the finger print scanner - sweet I've registered my print

3 - You take a few photos and make some slow mo vids of your dog taking a dump.

4 - You go back to running and using the phone in the exact same way you used your 5. But before you do, you Facebook post "Got an iPhone 5s.. don't be jelly"

5 - You ponder the meaning of life and if you should cut back on the amount of trolling you do on macrumors...

Good luck to you op. See you around Game Centre...

This update is not targeted at iPhone 5 owners. If you feel the same way then move on until next year.

This update is targeted at iPhone 4S owners and is a massive upgrade for them.

Apple does things on a 2-year cycle with the iPhone. Get over it.

I disagree. I believe apple are targeting all potential customers!

They know that some iPhone users must have the latest version (whatever the cost).

----------

It just made me think, if I am spending all that money. I have an iPhone 5, looks the same. Are Apple fooling me/us?

To the OP, I think your bigest issue is it will look the same as your iPhone 5 (and perhaps not everybody will realise you have the latest and greatest).

If this is your concern, then perhaps your thread title is correct.

As for me I'll upgrade when the 6 comes out. Why? Because if you get every iPhone you will only see a minor improvement with each model.

You need to ask yourself
Is a touch sensor that saves you 2-5 seconds really worth $700 or more?

If yes I wish I was as rich as you to drop 700 on minor stuff. I'm a tech guy too and instead of buying a 5s (my upgrade is next september anyway) I went out and got the entry level MBP with the education discount for almost the same price as the 64gb iPhone, except I'm getting 500 gb and the obvious difference between os x and iOS

If you feel like a sucker for upgrading, don't do it. If you're anything like me, you will feel worse if you do.

Something clicked in my head sometime in the last 6 months. You probably don't need the $700 phone every year. You might, for your business or something, but I doubt it. I feel like a bit of a moron for having even a 5 in my pocket, but I got a good deal on it I would have been crazy to pass it up. At my age my dad was working a ****** job in a new country just to support his tiny kids. And I got up at 7AM on a Saturday to stand in line for an hour to pay a bunch of money for the latest cell phone.

I would be able to do all the same pointless things on a three year old phone that I do now - Twitter, texting, web browsing, watching videos, etc. There is no significant difference between that phone and the latest one.

I don't want to sound like a hippie or a guilty yuppie or something but ...if you've reached the point where you can't see the point in going from a 5 to a 5S, then why do it? If you can sell your old one and get a new one without paying extra, I see the sense in it. If you're putting down hundreds of extra dollars to do it, if you're contemplating standing in line for hours to do it, ...I don't know, I'd feel like a huge dope. sorry for all the text. Hope nobody takes it as a slam against them, just a stream of consciousness post.

Very well said!

That might be counted as parody too. That's what companies try to do for years, basically which is to release product each in every year that is going to make us desire to get it. Or Adding significant feature that we're wondering about. 5S is definitely in that category. Finger Print lures people away because of curiosity, like they did in 4S with Siri. However, that feature looks more effective for people who are interested to upgrade their iPhone's or smart phones. That feature actually allows you get rid of something that you do every single time. Personally, I do many times enter my passcode, thereafter I lock my phone, which literally bugs me to re-enter it. Although all features, I do not consider to switch iPhone 5 to iPhone 5s, cause it's almost same one with 5 except couple of features and hardware. Probably, iPhone is going to hit biggest impact since 2010.

-i had to sell my iPhone 4 when the iPhone 5 came out because i had the home button problem but i had the iPhone 4 for two years and there was no scratch.

-i received the iPhone 5 with scuffs all over it it's embarrassing i can't use it anymore and i never liked the slate color either.

the main reason i'm upgrading from 5 to 5S is the new space grey color and hopefully they fixed the scuffgate problem.

i feel like we have lost touch with what life is. im a big techy and i miss the old days of no cell phones honestly. not sure how we have gotten to this point of life i wish i grew up in a different time.

The only iPhone I ever bought instantly after launch and directly from apple for the full price was the iPhone 4. Well, now I've finally convinced myself to purchase a used iPhone 5 for as little as half the original price (16GB). I know that I made a good deal. IMO that's the way to go, purchase old apple hardware from eBay or from friends. Directly from apple it's just an aweful lot of money that, if I think about it, isn't justifiable for what you get in return.

I did this mainly because ios 7 is terribly slow on my 4.

I stopped reading the article after the vulgarity and childish swearing. Are we still in high school?

Then you should probably stop reading these forums at all. I'm getting really tired of all of the childish insults and name calling and psycho ranting myself. It's a shame because this place used to be a lot nicer place to "hang out". We've always had that element of course, but it's getting really ridiculous.

Cute cartoon, but you do understand that the phone does not store the actual fingerprint but a simple data hash. Even if someone could hack into your phone, the hash would be meaningless.

What if you could upgrade yearly and trade/sell your old phone for money to buy a new one?

Prior to the AT&T discontinuation of yearly upgrades (that took effect last year for most of us, with iPhone 5) that is exactly what a lot of people did. It's what I did.

Now, I just rotate through my lines. I have 4 people on my account. I would not pay full price for an iPhone every year. But, if people have the money and want to, who cares?

I would not buy an entry-level MBP brand new at this point. I have a 2yo top of the line 17" MBP that I'll use until using it becomes more effort than it's worth. :)

Biggest upgrade for me would be the new camera with burst mode, better low light, slow mo, etc. touch ID would be second. That said, it's a minor update (I'd say only 4 --> 4s brought less), and I'll be good with my 5 for another year.

it's my first macbook pro, I got it cheaper than the base air. Brand new. I would call that a pretty big deal lol. and I think I have the new magsafe charger.

Hey! I just thought I'd quickly contribute my thoughts;

I currently have an iPhone 5 and I'll be getting the iPhone 5S come this Friday/Monday, simply because I'm able to and can afford it (everybody is in a different tree, but we won't get into that debate).

I think the first OP mentioned he's intending/intended to buy an iPhone 5S 32GB for £629.00. I assume they have an iPhone 5 32GB already... sell the old iPhone 5 for £350.00 – £425.00 (it's possible, just depends on condition and how/where you sell the device), that way... you're only really going to be putting another £204 – £279 towards the 5S (a lot less than the £629 originally).

So people really think that a bigger screen and a redesign is the definition of innovation??

Just look at how many things the 5S brings to the table, non of which the competitors have.

Sometimes i really think most people are just plain stupid or are drawn to gimmicks.

How sad

I totally agree. Watch the film Disconnect and it's clear what kind of world we live in now. The film is terrific actually.

What are you talking about?

A better camera and faster processor are a natural evolution. Soon the competition will come out with something better then Apple will come out with something better then that.

Same could be said about the fingerprint scanner. When it was on an Android phone it was the best of the current technology (nearly 2 years ago?) now Apple has a better scanner.

So explain the innovation to me since we are so stupid I naturally can't figure it out.

So I just read this article.

Watch the video, if you cant be bothered reading it. Watch the video here

So I am planning to queue for the 5S in Grey 32GB costing £629/$998

Now....I have the iPhone 5, if anyone upgrading paying for the SIM FREE option are we stupid?

In all honestly its just a touch sensor, everything is is just a bump of what already the iPhone 5 has.

It just made me think, if I am spending all that money. I have an iPhone 5, looks the same. Are Apple fooling me/us?

Another year down the line and there's another year of wear and tear and its another year out of date. Sold my 32GB 5 for £300 which means only shelling out £329 for the 5s.
Ever since the 3G/3GS the media have been lamenting the downfall of the once great Apple, saying it has run out of ideas. With the 5s you get the fingerprint sensor, the A7 and the M7, better camera not to mention all the benefits of ios7. I reckon that's a worthwhile update - go for it.

Surely the viewpoint of value in upgrading is entirely dependant on a personal situation, as much as it is in the product itself?

A. If you're in the market to upgrade (end of contract, still on a 3GS/4/4S, have loadsamoney) then you'll see the strengths in the 5C and 5S phones, love the designs and the specs, etc.

B. If you're not wanting or able to upgrade (middle of contract on a 5, just got a 5, are skint) then you'll see the 5S/5C as a poor upgrade, with minimal benefits.

This is confirmation bias at work - the instinct to find evidence that supports your view, and exclude evidence that contradicts it.

There are some agreed truths...

- There is a strong desire to feel you have the latest or premium of Apple's products. [Hence the hate when the iPad 3 was quickly updated to the 4. The 3 still worked just the same, but the owners of the 3 lost that sense of owning the latest product.]

- The repeated comments about the 'S' cycle being only minor upgrades is of course nonsense. The greatest processor and graphics speed upratings have come with S models. Each S model has also had a camera improvement. And not just these number specs.. each S model has brought a significant feature. It's not the cosmetic redesign of the non-S models, admittedly, but not insignificant either.

- Everyone wants different things out of a phone. Some want features. Some want certain sizes. And some just want a phone! But what's right for one, is not right for another..

=> So, I would conclude that the 'S' iPhones are not "minor updates". I would conclude that how you perceive the latest iPhone will be influenced by what you currently own, what you would like to own, and what your financial situation is regarding being able to buy a new phone.

This thread could fit into every S release year.
Simple, if you don't want it don't get it. The shell is the same the interior is much different.

Oh, absolutely! They are great machines and I'm sure you'll love it. I loved my first MBP. I remember it well. It was the first gen 13". :)

Yup. I dunno why people get so riled. S year is always about the innards and not a lot about the exterior.
