FWIW. I just downloaded a bios for my Dell D630 (work notebook) w/ an Nvidia GPU and the release notes state the following.

------------------
1. Updated Intel Video BIOS.
2. Updated Nvidia Video BIOS.
3. Enhancement for thermal control.

Very interesting.. Wonder if :apple: will do the same?

I don't recommend to install this as it will only delay the problem, not solve it. With this software they hope to push the defects out of the warranty relevant time to lower their costs.

In the Apple's specs page did you guys notice this?

It gives out the temperature.. is that for cpu or gpu? And if that's the operating temperature... seems like the 57C that I get from just moderate usage doesnt look good..

It's for neither, lol. That's the ambient air temp you should operate the machine in.

Oh ok, lol.

I've noticed its pretty hard to sell the current gen mbp than the previous gen that I have before.. I have a feeling its due to the nvidia gpu announcement.

I noticed that the smc fan control program is majorly outdated.. anyone know if its ok with leopard? Release date saids from 2007.

I'll just wait until everyone forgot it and sell it just before christmas. My text on ebay will say: "One of the hottest GPUs you can get for gaming..." ;) So no one can complain I didn't tell them about the heat problems of the GPU

Hey I'm no worse than nvidia by selling my mbp~

I'm not sure if it has to do with this whole nvidia issue, but just now my whole display started going wonky and glitchy.

I took a screenshot of it as it happened.

Anyone else had this problem?

Man it reminds me of the nintendo days where you have to take out the cartridge because your game looks like that and have to blow inside the nintendo and the game itself and gently press down on the game for it to work.

Or when your pissed you press down for it to be clicked in and out for the game rapidly hoping it would work and finally you chunking the game across the room hitting the wall then you load the game in and it finally works.

If all fails the alcohol cleaning solution! Which worked half the time...

Man but hate to say it.. so far the mbp owners are screwed. Still no word from apple, their keeping it like nothing ever happened.

Looked at the system console log and saw this:

7/15/08 9:23:34 PM kernel NVChannel(GL): Graphics channel exception! status = 0xffff info32 = 0x6 = Fifo: Parse Error

I smell bull crap. While some of the statements released by NVIDIA might be true but there is still a hint that they are hiding something (e.g. where is the list of affected GPUs?). Plus, if not all NVIDIA GPU's are affected, I can be sure that the 8600M GT is affected with the fabrication flaw.

Just look at Dell's recent BIOS release for their Latitude D630 with nVidia Quadro NVS135M/140M GPU..

Latitude D630 System BIOS version A12
Release Date: 6/22/2008
Fixes/Enhancements
------------------
1. Updated Intel Video BIOS.
2. Updated Nvidia Video BIOS.
3. Enhancement for thermal control.

The Quadro NVS135M/140M GPU is essentially based on G84M chip, which the 8400M/8600M also shares.

Why would they release a new BIOS to ramp up the thermal control if there isn't a problem with it?

Plus, a friend of mine working in technical support department servicing Acer laptops encountered massive returns on notebooks with NVIDIA 8400/8600 mobile GPUs in them.

This is more than just a coincidence.

For what it's worth, here is the message I sent Apple yesterday:

I'm currently in the market for a MacBook Pro, my first Apple product, for compatibility with graduate school programs in computer music.

Suffice to say, my interest in getting a MBP was muted once I learned of nVidia's graphics card defect, and noticed the resounding lack of subsequent response from Apple. I'm writing to add my name to those who really need to see some sort of acknowledgment from Apple about this problem and what course of action is intended. The current strategy of silence, seemingly hoping that the problem will go away, does not a happy consumer make.

Simply letting nVidia say what amounts to "oh, just run your fans more," isn't terribly confidence inspiring. I'm aware that the GPU likely won't fail under normal circumstances, but I'm not prepared to spend over $3300 on a premium product with a known defect that isn't even being publicly discussed by the manufacturer.

So, please, step up and say something about this - say ANYTHING about this - just give some sort of acknowledgment to the market, both potential and existing users, that this problem exists and how you're prepared to make it right.

Thanks,
[name]

Maybe eventually they'll listen. I'm sad to say that I don't really have much of a choice but to purchase a MBP, given OS compatibility issues, but at least I know what to watch out for now.

What do you think Apple is going to do?

Say a lot of people's graphics cards are getting fried, would Apple just replace the logic board with the same exact graphics card? Or do you think there might be a slight chance they will make a new logic board with a comparable ATI card?

I always liked ATI, never had a nVidia card until now, never again.

What do you think Apple is going to do?
Apple would release the new MacBook Pros with ATI cards hopefully and then replace those MacBook Pros with Nvidia cards that have problems with the new MacBook Pros.
