Bad feelings

The only thing that I know for sure, is that I asked on official apple support forums in order to find some clues, but they deleted my post in 5 minutes. That's the only answer I've got from them, and, in my opinion, it's not a good omen.

It could be a bad thing or a good thing, what I think is:

1) It could be that apple wants this issue to be quiet so people arent afraid to by their notebooks.
2) They dont know what to do yet either, recall or no recall and with a newer montevina mbp released maybe their hoping the nvidia issue would die out.

Man that is messed up though, apple support forums deleting your post/thread. I mean at least the administrators here are nice enough to not erase my annoying posts~ :D

FWIW. I just downloaded a bios for my Dell D630 (work notebook) w/ an Nvidia GPU and the release notes state the following.

------------------
1. Updated Intel Video BIOS.
2. Updated Nvidia Video BIOS.
3. Enhancement for thermal control.

Very interesting.. Wonder if :apple: will do the same?

This is not good. Now they've choosen to ramp up the fan and say they've done their job.

scmguru, does the fan on your D630 run more often/louder than usual?

i had an hp zd7000 a few years back. for one reason or another, it crapped out on me. then i read that that particular model had some major thermal problems and there was a class action law suit against it. since then, nothing has happened. i still have it, but it just sits in the corner. so even if apple admits there's a problem officially, how long will it take to implement a solution?

i now have the 2.4 sr mbp. it crapped out on me once and apple had to replace my logic board. i'm not sure if it was due to the gpu though, because i encountered an error when i tried installing the firmware update. i do notice that my gpu temp hangs around 70-80C during games and idles at around 50-60C.

i'm hoping i've extended my gpu life a little longer with the logicboard switch, but i think people have a valid fear, even though this thread does make it seem like 100% of the gpus are bad. i mean, no one wants to deal with a bad gpu and the whole process of getting a good product at the end of the day seems to be so involved. 3 logic board switches before a computer swap and when and where does apple care apply.

anyway... like the rest, i'll keep my fingers crossed and wait for an official announcement from apple.

I'm not too pleased to hear this after spending quite a lot buying this laptop to discover this issue. I have had one or two issues concerning screen glitches when I ran a windows game through a virtualisation program for around 4 hours; the menu bar along the top of the screen messed up and I hard to cold boot the laptop which I hate doing.

I was wondering, considering everyone's saying there are issues with it putting out too much heat, why doesn't everyone post the temperatures they get with it?

Currently my MBP GPU Diode idles at 64C and gets to nearly 80 when playing demanding games, under load etc.

Ok I just came back from the apple store. Mind you that I am out of warranty and have no applecare. The only part of my MBP that was still under warranty is the LCD which was swapped several days ago. Since then my MBP has been exhibitting intermittent graphical glitches, and sleep/wake issues that we are all becoming very familiar with. I never even turned on my computer for them to verify once! They took my word for it! After twenty minutes or so Genius went in the back, then talked to a manager and then said that they are going replaced the logic board.

Hmmmm interesting. Does apple know something we don't?

I wonder if the new batches of the mbp have the gpu fixed?

So I guess even out of warranty apple will replace the logic board.. the question is would they do the same after 2-3 years..

I just realized now that when snow leopard comes out.. and since it accelerates the usage of gpu.. there will be ALOT of nvidia gpu crapping out.

It seems like the video fan is always running at per the NTune application.. I ran the NVidia stability test for 10min and the GPU got up to about 85C.. at idle it runs at about 70C.

Replacing the GPU

Alright, I'mabout to invest in probably an MBP. If I do get one and the gpu dies after it's out of warranty, how much would it cost me to replace it? I don't want to buy a 2k computer if 3.1 years from now I'm going to need to put another 500 bucks in it just to keep it running.

How can Apple and while we at it Dell, Asus, Acer, HP etc continue to sell hardware we now know is faulty?

Surley it shouldn't be possible to buy any device with an NVIDIA 84xx or 86xx card now NVIDIA have annouced that these cards are defective.

Agreed. Shouldn't Apple issue a recall? I'm pretty sure its illegal (as a merchant) to sell something you know is broken or defective while advertising it as legit.

Let's see:

iBook G3 logic boards
iBook G4 logic boards
Powerbook 12" logic boards
Powerbook 15" lower ram slot
Powerbook 17" vertical lines on display
Battery issues with Powerbook 12" and 15"
1st version Macbook Pro overheating and battery bulging

Looks like almost all portable macs from 2003-2008 with the exception of Macbooks!

And in all cases, Apple just specified a small range of serial numbers where a larger range was affected (based on user reports)

Maybe it is time to just use a Hackintosh :)

With the exception of macbooks? How about the cracking issue?

how about a mass posting on apple discussions in 15 minutes?

Then I'd say I'm going for the guinness book of world record.

Its going to say under fastest and most posts under 15 minutes: "Jjahshik32," aka the bread maker, aka "the boss."

Is there a comprehensive list of portable apple laptop issues similar to the one that macuser1109 posted? If not, THANK YOU macuser1109. That's a very imformative post, and I am looking to complete it more.

Yellow tinting: More of a MacBook Pro problem. Have never seen it on a MacBook.

Peeling: Haven't heard of that.

Tinting as in the arm-rest getting a yellowish tint after little use, and the rubberish coat of the blackbooks peeling off, that's what I was taking about.

Yes in the "old" ones, but I think the new ones don't have this problem anymore.
