I think they do :p
Anyway did he say the current MBPs don't suffer from the same issue, including the 17" 8600m?

hah!

HAH!

I just called back today and was told that they still have the same problems!

WOW that is shady.

previous Gen

It was the previous generation, but new, MBPs. I haven't heard anything about the 9600s. I assume they're fine.

I thought Nvidia changed their solder? If they haven't, Apple is in big trouble as they are still selling bad cards in the 17" ones.

Hm, my MBP 2.2GHz 15.4" (Santa Rose) has been running fine. I've played CS: Source, AoE, and Starcraft on it (although not extensively). I have noticed on three occasions, however, that when I open the screen from sleep mode I get nothing on the screen. I close the screen, let the computer go into sleep mode, and open the screen again and usually it works fine.

I think I'm going to download 3dmark06 and benchmark the hell out of my video card to see if I can get it to pop. ;)

I don't believe the 9600's are free of this problem. Several users on the apple discussion forums (including me) with new unibody mbp's are experiencing crashes to a black screen after the GPU overheats due to the fans not kicking in on time. This happens usually while gaming but I got it once while using dreamweaver. I'm forced to use SMCFanControl until they replace the mainboard on my system.

I might buy one of the new 15" leftovers at Microcenter if they have supposedly fixed this issue in the latest ones. Not that we would ever get confirmation of this.

What are some signs of a faulty GPU, how can i tell if it is affecting me?

I had no signs at all until I tried to wake it up from sleep one evening (went from being fine at the end of the day to dead after my commute home from work). No working display, no working external display, but the machine ran and I could ssh into it.

My Santa Rosa 2.4's 8600 failed in October, Apple store replaced it within 24 hours. They didn't reassemble my MBP right and I've had problems since (its back in the store for the second time this week) but they were cool about the 8600. At least Apple is doing something about it, unlike all the other manufacturers whose consensus on the 8600s was "tough cookies."

You're kidding, right? Both Dell and HP began offering an additional year of warranty coverage for issues specifically related to the Nvidia issue (same as what Apple is offering) well over a month before Apple finally admitted the MBPs were also affected by this problem. If anything, it was Apple that was dragging their feet (though some people were speculating that they intentionally waited so long so that the new unibody MBPs could be released first).

Is this the same problem ?

I am not too sure if my problem is the same as you all, but here is my story. I purchased my MBP 2.4 back in Jul07, until just 2 months ago, everything seems to be fine, then I started to get jerky video playback and random kernel panics. Not just when the machine is under stress, but also during cold boot while apple logo was still up.

Anyway, that all prompted me to start my investigation. The first thing that I’ve notice is that I am starting to see these errors in /var/log/system.log …

localhost kernel[0]: GFX0: family specific matching fails
localhost kernel[0]: Matching service count = 1
localhost kernel[0]: Matching service count = 2

I googled this and found nothing and I tried TechTool that came with my Applecare and found nothing also. Then I found a copy of Apple Service Diagnostic ( ASD ) on the net and that I ran 5 iterations of all tests available. I had only one fail relating to the thermo sensor for the GPU, something about temperature was below operational range. That didn't help.

I ended up taking a print out of my system.log to a genius and him about this random kernel panic problem and I was told to reinstall the OS.

This is where I found an extra piece of my puzzle. I’ve never noticed that there is an Apple Hardware Test on the DVD, so I give that a go and it failed everytime with …

4VDC/1/40000003: VideoController

So I took my machine in to see the genius again and he hooked it up with a Lacie firewire drive and booted into a special nvidia ASD ( a different one compared to what I had ), after about a minute, I got a big red FAILED on the screen. The guenius didn’t argued any further and said I will get a new logic board. Then he got out to the back to see if they have any spare and 2 minutes later he was back with a box marked with item number 661-4958 PCBA MLB 2.4 GHZ REV2.

For you information, I’ve never really had the blank screen problem, and my system profile always quoted GeForce 8600M GT and never the Intel something that others had quoted. Here is the spec of my fault board ...

Chipset Model: GeForce 8600M GT
Type: Display
Bus: PCIe
VRAM (Total): 256 MB
Vendor: NVIDIA (0x10de)
Device ID: 0x0407
Revision ID: 0x00a1
ROM Revision: 3175

Do any of you get this crazy “kernel[0] : GFX0 “ error in your system.log ? Anyone tried the Apple Hardware Test on the DVD ? By replacing the logic board, do I ran a greater risk of getting this blank screen problem ?

Sorry for the long thread …

You almost certainly have the GPU issue and as for blank screens after replacement...not sure

I don't have time to read 40+ pages right now.

The day after the new gen of MBP came out I bought the old MBP model as the price was reduced and really didn't want the gloss, new port, etc of the new version.

I have:
Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro4,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz

Chipset Model: GeForce 8600M GT
Type: Display
Bus: PCIe
PCIe Lane Width: x16
VRAM (Total): 256 MB

All of my work is in AE and FCP. I work mostly off my desktop but need to rely on my MBP when I go to clients offices. I assume I am one of the inflicted? Is this thing going to blow up in my face? :p

Seriously though, w/o reading all pages... what is the general consensus on lifetime of this machine. I replaced my Titanium with the first gen aluminum and that thing still kicks to this day. A bit slow, fan always running and always hot as hell but it still works. Am I not to expect this kind of life from this new one?

Thanks!

It might die and it might survive depends on your usage but in your case i'd be inclined to say it will die sooner or later since you use Adobe After Effects

I was never too worried about my card.

My MBP overheated 1-2 when I got it but after that I found ways to keep it cool when I game.

Just upgraded to the new Nvidia drivers (which were not made for the 8600) and performance is more stable but graphicly I am seeing stuff getting a tiny bit worse. (but that might be me messing with the sliders).

So my question:
How can I see how much my baby's power has gone down/deteriorated? (I am guessing its like a car with how it looses horsepower when it ages).

How about buying a spare logic board (can't find a 2.5ghz one on ifixit...) for once it dies out to replace it?

I was in the Belfast Apple Store with a Genius yesterday - with the same problems - except my screen flickers as the temperature builds up - until it becomes unusable with constant flickering and garbelled images. BUT when he ran the test (from a little external lacie drive)- my MacBook Pro 2.2ghz SR passed all the tests - I asked him to try again - in the hope that I hadn't driven 50 miles and shut down my business for the afternoon in vain - and again it passed all the tests. I was quoted over £900 to replace the logic board - needless to say I'm pretty distressed about the whole situation. The genius admitted that there was something wrong with the 8600 - but NOT what needed to be wrong to have it replaced free of charge - I felt like I'd been offered 3 months to live.
So i brought my MacBook Pro home and let it run for a few hours and watched as the screen became unusable again - isn't there something I can do to get Apple to replace my logic board?

Maybe try another Apple store. In the meantime maybe stress the GPU more by connectiong to an external display, using quicklook to view pictures, using screensaver etc

Regretfully we only have one Apple Store in N.Ireland - I have sent some emails to apple customer care on the off-chance that they actually care enough to do something.

Thanks for your kind, encouraging words - I'm going to fleece this baby!

You story is actually kinda making nervous because my GPU went bad (failed the test) and i got a replacement that passed the Nvidia test. It seems to be working fine but over the last 72 hours i've been experiencing some weird symptoms.

1. Sometimes when i wake the computer from sleep the display goes black even though the machine works. Putting it back to sleep and re-awaking it usually solves the problem

2. I've been seeing yellow tears/artifacts that appear for an instant (literally a second) and are gone immediately but this is rare

3. I've seen a white line that spreads across something im viewing twice now but is fixed by either scrolling or closing the window (pics below)

I've checked the logs but no documented errors and i've stressed the GPU but it hasn't faltered once. So i dunno. Some evidence suggest my card maybe dying a very slow but sure death on the other hand the machine has worked flawlessly...and i watch a lot of Hi-Def videos

Hmmm...

I get yellow screen tear too, mine is 6 months old. I seem to find the BEST example of screen glitches is using the Atomsphir beta game. EVERY time I open it I get GPU glitches.

Check this out:

Why would you want to do that now? You have well over a year before the warranty expires for this specific issue.

If your computer is exhibiting problems contact AppleCare, bring it into an Apple store. The have diagnostics and will likely see that your machine has the issue and replace.
