My mid-2007 MBP died yesterday because of the NVidia chip problem :(
The good news is that Apple will repair it for free.
So not all is bad.

Mine is june 2007 2.2 sr - how did yours go - did it just expire suddenly - or was there a gradual decline showing symptoms?

Thanks

daaaamn....

bought mine in july 2007, crapped out on me on monday.
no real symptoms that i noticed, just gave out when i got back to it.

how long does it take to get the computer back from repair?

Depot is about a week, store maybe more (or less, depending on current queue)

i just got a 17" macbook pro which has the nvidia 8600m gt 512mb....is my computer doomed? should i return this thing and buy one of the uni body macbook pros? are the 9400 chips ok?
Will apple give me a full refund even though i got a custom matte screen?
would they refund me if i said all the 8600 cards are faulty....or wouldn't they believe me? arghh confused. I'll probably end up having to pay a restocking fee :(

The 9400 chips have great performance, but the problem with the video "wave" line while scrolling with the trackpad is obnoxious. I guess that Apple is investigating that problem right now. I don't see it when I scroll using the two finger method on the trackpad.

Did u check console logs for any NV/Graphics errors

No Nvidia Graphic errors but I still got a massive glitch. Btw it's just inside the application window.

Mine died last Thursday. I dropped it off on Friday and I picked it up from the Apple store yesterday so 5 days total.

Runs noticeably cooler now and it does seem "snappier"! jk

The 9400 chips aren't perfect either

Another way to find out would be to run that application on another mac with ATI/Intel GPX

I haven't got another Mac. I tried it on my pc which also has an 8600 :O and it didn't get any glitches.

New MBP

The new MBP doesn't have the troubled 8600 chips. Apple waited till just before announcing the new mbp to verify the old ones had problems. I have to assume the old models -all- have potential problems. You can buy an old model with a bad graphics chip or get a new model with a glossy screen. Bad choices in my book. No new laptop for me at this point. My next new laptop will NOT have a glossy screen ( I actually have a new MBP that I use at work. Hate the screen.) I'm holding out before moving to a PC laptop in the hopes Apple may offer matte screens again. Slim chance.

Anyone know for sure if the 8600 have been fixed and the MBPs are being replaced with them?

I'm kinda wondering the same thing. I ordered a refurbished last gen MBP from the Apple Canada store this past Thursday. It's a 2.4 ghz core 2 duo, 2 gb ram, 200 gb hdd, and a 8600 GT with 256 mb. It's suppose to arrive on Monday. I hope they figured out what's wrong with them and worked out a permanent fix for it..

no reason for hope

happy to be corrected but I haven't read anything to indicate there is good, solid reason to believe there was ever a real fix, and the fact that Apple waited till the last minute before the new mbp's were announced tells me the problem was on-going. Only a clear statement that such and such batches from such and such serial numbers would clarify things from my perspective. If I were to get a previous gen mbp I'd get applcare and keep it for 2 years and 6 months and then sell it with the applecare intact no matter how good it had been till that time. My old G4 Titanium still chugs along without concern.

There will not be an official statement ever if there's really a real fix.

The only thing we can do is take care of your mbp and monitor the gpu regularly. If it's meant to go, it will go. And when that happens, send it to Apple for a repair.

Before I buy my mbp, I was so worried about getting the yellow screen, having dead/stuck pixels, uneven backlight etc. I mean if I keep getting paranoid about it, I'll never buy anything. I guess it has everything to do with reading from comments in Macrumors. When I finally got it, I ran all the tests, and realise my mbp didn't have all the flaws.

Sometimes we just have to bite the bullet, and tell ourselves we belong to the majority of the users who will not be so unlucky. If we end up being the minority, just send it in to Apple for repair. Sometimes life can be so much simpler if we allow it to be.

That's pretty much the way I'm looking at it right now. People who go on forums to discuss problems and flaws they encounter probably make up the minority of mbp users, who have experienced the problem. I'm saying probably because not everyone experiences it goes on forums and talks about it. You won't see a thread titled "my 8600M GT is a survivor!" which can create paranoia naturally as only problems are talked about.

Hi there, just thought I'd share my experiences of this issue.

Bought 2007 MBP 2.4, 256mb Nvidia. Died after 11 months, classic GPU failure. That was repaired, but my screen had also developed white spots which seemed to get worse each time the computer glitched. They didn't replace the screen, so I have a bit of turkey there.

5 months later, it went again, outside of the 90 warranty they gave the new logic board. The screen was black and it wouldn't drive an externa display either. In-store they did the test with the external Lacie GPU-test drive. IT PASSED? They told me the GPU was not in the 'faulty batch' so I wasn't eligable for the 2 year warranty, even though I could hear the machine was booting up as normal, and even loading Skype in OSX, so it was clearly a GPU failure.

One heated phone call to Applecare later (not angry just determined, and mentioning that I'm writing articles about music production and wanted to reccommend Apple machines but couldn't - all true by the way) got me a free repair authorisation. Didn't like what I had to go through to get it though. It should have been no questions asked! Not only that but if the GPU goes 90 days from now, that's it - I'd have to pay for it.

All this stress has made me distrust my MPB so much that I felt forced into buying an Apple desktop to stop any future downtime. So, even though I didn't pay for the repair, I'm paying far more for simple peace-of-mind. Not good, Apple! I just wish they'd give all 8600GT MBP owners free 3-year Applecare on the GPU only. Then I'd at least have peace of mind...

I recently spoke to a Mac Genius about this matter and was concerned my batch was effected.

Although i have had no failure, I said wither I can have it fixed anyway?

He said; Drop it in, broken or unbroken and well replace the logic board, id suggest this rather it works or not and sooner rather then later

SO i guess thats a clear indication on what to do.

I have a 2.2 revision bough july 2007

UK

I am adding this; as my macbook pro, have never ever had an issue and im alittle adverse to handing it into apple (thats let face it, may cause more problems then less).

So i am going to risk it going pop!

Well if they know which batches are faulty, they should come out and state that explicitly. Or is it just based on their test in the store?

Its based on tests and presenting symptoms

On a general note:

What will probably happen in my case is i'll buy AppleCare when my 1 yr warranty is almost up in fall next year, as i want to avoid buying a new machine till Rev B of Nehalem laptops start shipping. In other words, i intend to buy a Display, AppleCare & keyboard and just keep this for a year or two depending on how fast Apple lets loose Nehalem laptops. If it breaks within this timeframe i'll just drop it off and get it fixed

In the meantime...knock on wood its working fine

I personally think:

wait untill near end of warranty and have it changed, if no faults happen

obviously if fault arises,sort

but i dont want to hand in my Jully 2007 MBP which has no faults, when it seems apple could create more ! wait till it goes! just remember the golden rule of computing:

The 9400 chips aren't perfect either

You are right that the 9400M chipset is not perfect (the wave-distortions while scrolling in Safari), but the blank screen problem discussed in this link is not related to the 9400M chipset. The black screen problem which The Inquirer claims is the more serious problem seems to be unique to the 9600M GT discrete card: see AI or better yet, the apple support forum. In the latter link, posters report that the blanks screens occur only while gaming using the 9600M GT card:

1. "using the 9400 chip with low settings. Using the 9600 chip I was able to play with no problems by entering /console maxfps 30 in the chat window. Without that command the fans kick into high gear and the system locks/goes black within five minutes."
2. "the 9400 plays them all on max settings with only the rarest occurrence of fan ramp up, and never a failure of any kind. But the 9600 GT can't handle any of them without overheating and taking out my display. I don't have ANY modern games save for Flat Out 2 which of courses locks up just the same."

and others...

Personally, I don't think The Inquirer is the most reliable source.

I'm having weird DVI issues (tracking lines on my laptop panel with video and when using expose that dont show up on my DVI monitor under mirrored screens). Does this sound lke an 8600 error or it something else?

I'm trying to debate wehther to bring it into the genuis bar but I hear so many horror stories and every time i've gone they seem incompetent so I dono what to do.
