I bought my mbp in august 2007 and today, in class, I encountered my first problem. The screen flashed with faint vertical lines and there are horizontal lines flickering constantly. At first I thought it was the graphics card but when I went home to plug in my monitor, it was fine... I guess it's just the screen, booked an appointment for tomorrow to get it fixed.

Just got my mbp 2.4SR back from the local AASP. Service was lousy (didn't deliver by date and never called to let me know it was ready) but repair itself seems to be in order so far.

Is there anyway to find out what revision the MLB or the GPU is? It would be nice to know if I got a newer board or GPU.

Thanks!

If you have to take it back in six months, you'll know it's an older one.

Hi everyone,

I have a quick question for you guys. I have a MacBook Pro (Early 2008) 17" that the screen goes black on at random times and the fans kick on at full speed. Last time i noticed it the GPU and Mem Cont were 65*C+ range while browsing the web. I have to shut the lid and wait for it to go to sleep before i can open the lid again to use it. Some times this method does not work and i have to restart the computer.

I'm wondering if I have the same issues that affect other 8600M GT's.

Thank you for your assistance.

Anyone think a poll would be a good idea to gauge how widespread this problem is?

I have a SR MBP with an nvidia 8600, and it:

A. Hasn't given me any problems, at least not the video card.

B. I have had to take mine in once, and it appears to be fixed.

C. Mine has been repaired more than once.

It's not scientific, but it may provide some insight.

Agreed, this thread needs a poll !

I would be voting A. 22months, no problems so far..touch wood

I don't think the the average person using real world application/s will be affected by this.

You're kidding, right? This problem exists across all the nvidia mobile 8x00 GPUs, Dell, HP, Sony, etc. It is not just an Apple problem. Pleanty of people just using their Sony Vaio for browsing alone have dead laptops and Sony did NOT extend the warranty. The machine is basically an expensive plastic brick.

You may or may not experience the problem and while most users will not, enough defective components are out there so as to make it probable that any given user may experience a failure over the life of their laptop. That is why you see many people selling 8600-equipped MBPs before they fail.

Cheers,

So.... you think because of this issue people will see a "decrease" in everyday performance? Is that right?

No one here thinks that. The problem is that any owner of a 8600m GT MBP could have their video crap out on them (hopefully within the extended warranty period.)

It might be that certain users tax the GPU more and will hasten the failure. But maybe that just means a light user ends up with a GPU failure 3 years down the road after the extended warranty has expired.

So.... you're saying that, after the faulty GPU fails, users will experience no change in everyday performance?

What? After the GPU fails, the user's computer no longer works.

(I should've quoted your prior post, where you say "I don't think the the average person using real world application/s will be affected by this.") Anyone could be affected by this, just depends on if they got a defective unit.

There seems to be a SR trend here...

Hello Everyone,

There seems to be a SR pattern to the posts here. Most people posting are SR owners, not Penryn. Penryn runs cooler so perhaps it doesen't stress out the GPU as much. Are there any Penryn owners out there with failed GPU's? What about Penryn users who have had their GPU's replaced 2 or 3 times?

What is this supposed to mean? You originally said that the average user using real world programs won't see a failure, which is ridiculous. I'm not sure what you mean by "real world programs," but I can tell you that mine failed and I've never played a game on it. The most intense program I use is Lightroom and occasionally Handbrake.

Yeah, after the GPU fails you can't see anything on the screen, so I'd say there's a pretty big change in everyday performance.

Does it make sense to

Does it make sense to find out at which age the cards are usually failing and what computers are impacted most ? Are those mainly the SR units ?

Does anybody know if the new MBP with the 9600 cards are messed up too? I'm looking to sell my aluminum MBP w/ the 8600 card so I don't have to worry about this situation anymore.

Hey guys I was just working on photoshop when all of a sudden the screen freaks out and produced green horizontal lines all over, even after a reboot the lines are still there. Am I screwed with no applecare?? :(:(:( I wasn't even doing anything extensive. I have a MBP 3,1 2.2ghz August 2007...

What should I do?
