I believe your card is covered until then by apple's extended warranty for these cards in any event.

If the NVIDIA graphics processor in your MacBook Pro has failed, or fails within three years of the original date of purchase, a repair will be done free of charge, even if your MacBook Pro is out of warranty.

FWIW, I got a Penryn MBP 15" 2.5 w/512 8600M GT (got it day 1 Feb 08) and i haven't encountered any graphics related problems. And I've done A LOT of gaming in Windows - So the temperature has fluctuated very much.

However, I did have to have the superdrive replaced twice, because it wasn't burning DL DVDs very well.

I would really like to see a poll about this to see what % of users are experiencing GPU failures.

Poll was attempted many times in a few threads, I thought I was like you a couple months ago, "hey it's not gonna happen to my penryn" then all of a sudden it just did.

This 74 page thread should be enough proof how many users were affected just in this forum alone.

So is my 17" MBP built in October 2008 (Mac Pro 4,1) with 8600 GT card ok and exempt from this issue??

Nvidia takes addl charge & Sony finally acknowledges Nvidia problems

http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/news-item.pl?mdl=VGNFZ190N&news_id=349

FWIW, they are the last major manufacturer to do so. Additionally, Nvidia took another charge against earning because of this problem.

http://www.networkworld.com/news/2009/080609-nvidia-takes-charge-for-faulty.html

However, they are quite unconcerned about the impact of this issue on the enduser. Note the focus on the PC makers (who keep using Nvidia components). Note a couple of quotes from Nvidia's CEO.

"Nvidia's customers, such as PC makers"

"However, the costs are a small distraction and haven't impacted Nvidia's ability to launch new products, Huang said."

Cheers,

Question: logic board they're using to replace defective GPU's, is the issue corrected or is the faulty chip still being used and Apple will continue to replace them until the product is basically EOL or you fall outside the 3 years in which Apple will not to help you unless you pay like every Apple computer after 3 years of AppleCare?

the replacement logic boards contain the same defective 8600's even though they are called rev. 2 boards. apple will continue to replace logic boards exhibiting symptoms of gpu failure.

My early 2008 MBP is about to be a year old and problem free so far! But I just bought AppleCare to cover myself incase it decides to crap out.

As noted in my earlier post you were covered anyway by apple's extended warranty for issues related to the specific card under discussion, so you now have applecare for any other issues that might arise. ;)

Just picked up my MBP from the Apple Store here in Toronto. Apparently I now have the "rev2" version of the MLB, although I'm pretty sure I have the same defective 8600M GT now, its just a matter of time before this one fails. In any case, I can report that so far it's working great. Just played Gears of War on Win 7, and now on OS X and everything is running as smooth as it was like before the GPU failure.

Just a question, what are my chances for getting a replacement should this new "rev2" fails as well? I've already had to go for a battery replacement when I first got it in 07 due to the Sony defective ones, then the power adapter failed in 2 weeks because it was the new smaller model that they introduced back then, and now this. Just curious though, I still love my MBP , it's hands down the best machine I've ever owned. It's just knowing that this thing can happen again thats kind of disheartening, since I paid 3K CAD for it, not to mention my AppleCare is gonna run out mid 2010, so if this 8600M GT fails after my AC runs out, I'm gonna be pissed. :p (and rightfully so)

Hmm, Does Apple still have that policy that after 3 repairs, you can get a new machine?

It that's the case you can get a new uMBP after the 3rd turn in.

I don't think this has ever been a rule, it's up to them whether giving you a new machine or not. I guess it comes down with the quality of their customer service, but it also depends who you deal with(i.e. geniuses, phone service managers...).

I thought that it was after three attempts at a repair of the same issue. Like a 4th gpu failure they will not repair it they will replace it.
