I wouldn't pin your hopes on getting a Unibody replacement. All Apple are promising is a replacement graphics chip.

The guy at the Apple Store I visited said it was free repairs for the graphics card for two years from date of purchase. I said I thought the technote here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377 said three years. But I've just looked at it again and now it says "Apple will continue to evaluate the repair data and will provide further repair extensions as needed."

What does that mean? I'm not wrong am I - it did say three years at one point?

Does that mean they will go on replacing the wretched cards indefinitely?

it means after 2 years you should have bought a new notebook if it breaks again....

stupid 8600gt failures....

I dumped my SR-based MBP with the 8600 4 months after I got it back from being repaired. Didn't like the whole time bomb issue! ebay is your friend.

Cheers,

First replacement here. I have a buddy who is the ACT at my University computer store, and he hooked my machine up for the diagnostic test they do. It failed twice, so he put the order in for a new logic board. The part order stated they would send a REV 2 board out. This was all last Friday.

I come in today and we look at the new LB that was sent, and there's a letter in the box. Turns out Apple had run out the REV 2 boards, and they sent one of the original to replace it.

I suppose it's only a matter of time before this one fails as well, though it passed the diagnostic when we tested it.

Wait. Confused. The logic board is different from the Motherboard that has the wretched 8600 chip stuck on it right?

My graphics card - 8600 - has been wonky since I got the machine and had been going downhill in recent weeks but it was the Logic board that died with no warning and killed my MBP.

Apple refused to replace the laptop because apparently you need three major failures and the graphics card and logic board only qualify as two. At least they are replacing both for free.

They tell me the revision 2 8600 graphics chips never fail! They tell me this repeatedly because I kept saying that I had heard that all the 8600 chips are faulty and the revision 2 thing means nothing.

Apple insist that they are replacing my graphics card with a revision 2 chip that will not fail.
I was not expecting a problem with the logic board which is what has actually killed my machine. It was staggering on with the bad graphics card in spite of many wierdnesses and much black screen after sleep.

There is a revision 2 Logic board AS WELL or do you mean the Mother board?

Is it the same thing?

Same thing. Logic board = motherboard.

From posts within this and other threads, their assurance that REV 2 boards do not fail is incorrect. However, consider that they are a contact point for customers whose machines are (presumably) doing things they don't want. That is, they get paid to reassure the customer that what's happening will work, even if only in the short term.

Same as above. They are the same thing.

Any way you can identify if you have a revision 2 board as I've had mine replaced in the last 6 months and would like to kinow.

Thanks.

If memory serves, the problem with the 8600 video card was a manufacturing defect. I'm presuming the revision 2 means a replacement card by nvidia properly made to spec.

you are right about the manufacturing defect. you would think so but you would be dead wrong several people including me have had the "rev 2" board suffer a gpu failure.

I find it disconcerting that they are substituting the original part for the updated as replacements for this issue. Even if the REV 2 boards supposedly fix the issue, how can it be justified that replacing a defective part with another is more than just a stop-gap measure?

In the long run it only has to be justified to the shareholders, it's called capitalism. And you can be sure that cost/benefit analyses were performed!

Great, my mbpro decided to **** the bed tonight, 12 hours before I have to create a business proposal with a bunch of media... Thank the lord for this iPhone i got yesterday, at least I can search the problem.

Does anyone know how long it takes to fix? I'm moving to my university town in 4 days, the timing of all this just seems book worthy. Oh and it just passed the 2 year mark, literally either today or yesterday, did apple create a 2year long grenade? I just want my data on there then i hope the whole thing fries so they give me new one for this ********, 3 grand into a laptop that last 2yearz, from 95% functionality (burner needed cleaning) to 0% LITERALLY overnight, at the worst possible timing (maybe before finals is worse...)

Does anyone know how long it takes, ballpark figures?
Thanks for any advice!!!!

Brent Cross Apple Store (UK) took mine in Thursday, had it ready Tuesday. That's the best case scenario. Generally the busier the store, the more likely they are to have parts. But then if you go to an Apple Store which is crazy busy (ie. Regent Street, UK) you might be waiting a while...

Sorry to hear, what a pain! My macbook pro is just coming to two years old this week....manufactured 'sept 07. Hope it will be OK!

It IS 3 years!

It still says three years (as of today anyway...Apple has changed that article before and could change it again). Go back and reread it again. Everyone freaking out with their MBP hitting 2 years can rest easy at least for another year!

Here's what it says: "If the NVIDIA graphics processor in your MacBook Pro has failed, or fails within three years of the original date of purchase, a repair will be done free of charge, even if your MacBook Pro is out of warranty."

My MBP stopped displaying video on the screen the day I moved away to school. I came home today (5 days later) to go to the Apple store to drop it off to get it fixed.

When I brought it there, the tech said that the logic board was bad, not the GPU, and that I should pay $320 to get it fixed. The GPU is part of the logic board. But, my computer functions perfectly when I VNC into it except that it reports that the GPU us an X3100. The tech said that my MacBook failed the test with "error code 2: eligible graphics processor not found". My MBP DOES have the 8600 - it's a 2.2 GHz Santa Rosa from September 2007. Maybe it fried itself so badly that nothing can detect it.

So, now I'm going back tomorrow to see what they have to say. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Jeez, some "geniuses" they are. They can't even tell that the X3100 has never been nor deserved to even be in a Macbook Pro.

I'm going back tomorrow armed with a pile of papers, showing the model of the laptop from Apple's warranty checker, the manufacture date, and a list of specs for my model. And I have a screenshot of the System Profiler window. That should hopefully be enough.

And I have a letter ready to send to Steve if they don't fix it. :)

Apple genius claims without any testing or diagnosing under the hood that it is a bad logic board. (Actually he plugged in a hard drive to get the serial of the video card, pretending it was a diagnosis.)
I tried deleting the sleepimage as recommended on the forums. That brought back the screen. Then how is it a hardware problem? Only for some reason the black screen of death returned. So maybe it is a hardware issue that is caused by an unstable driver.
When I asked the Apple genius to explain this, he said that the update must have brought out an existing hidden problem in the GPU. He was careful not to say it was a defective GPU, but that it was an issue my machine is having.
...

I asked the genius how could i be making screen shots of working software if the logic board had failed? He could only guess it was the GPU, at which point I realized he was willing to tell me a price to fix the machine when he did not actually know what was wrong. He had just told me earlier that the video card was working after plugging in a hard drive to determine if the card was in the specific range of Nvidea's coverage. Wait a minute... THE GPU IS WHERE?

Why did the Apple genius, after telling me the video card was working, tell me that the problem could be in the GPU? The answer is obvious, he does not know. He could not possibly know. He's just following orders. He's not a genius technician. It's all a sham to reduce expensive fixes.

It seems the logic board replacement is a “catch all” fix at my expense, catching the driver issue or whatever it is by replacing everything under the hood. One should suspect the logic boards are defective, at the rate they are replaced as many of these forums are evidence.

EXACTLY what I had today! If you don't mind me asking, which store was this at?

Shall we stay away from snow leopard?

I heard that mbps running SL get 10c hotter. If I install SL on my SR mbp with the 8600mGT in it, will it failed more easily?

You'll be speeding up the process of killing it, thats about it.

Only way gettign around it is to smcfancontrol the thing.
