btw is there any sort of petition for this issue?
like requesting for full MBP (with 8600) recall
i know it's impossible for it to happen.....
but it's better sitting here and waiting for death..
well mine just died today :(

has anyone with a 9600M GT had a failure? I think i remember reading that the problems that plagued the 8600 were still present in the 9600...i think? anyone know?

Also read that somewhere.. Think it was an article analysing the materials from the 9600 cards, concluding that it was the same "bad bumps" as the 8600.

I've seen a couple of issues on uMBP. But maybe people tend to stress the 9600 less, because off the switchable graphics? Who knows.

But i'm not buying anything with dedicated nVidia graphics for a long period of time!

I'll let you know if something happens. I use mine daily to drive my external display amongst other things

Hooray for Apple!!!

Recently my MPB's GPU 06/2007 also failed. After a little struggle with apple they replaced the mainboard under warranty.
At first I didn't expect Apple would fix it under warranty and was completely prepared for battle. If I had to take it to court I would have. But there's no need. Apple fixed it and I am happy:)

So hooray for :apple:

no man...we have to bring it to court regardless...
it's clear nvidia's fault...
replacing a faulty chip with a new faulty chip won't solve the problem...
at the end all 8600 mbp users are f'ed...
wt can we do after the warranty ends?! NOTHING!!
so I say we should run the GPU as much as possible, get repaired more than 3 times and get a new MBP for replacement!!

btw would that work in Canada?

So, the bottom line is...

I own the last-gen "classic" MBP, and it has not failed yet.
After I do something that causes the temps to rise, I do not put it into sleep mode right after that, but use it normally (surfing the web, etc..) So, the fact of the matter is this:
1. All 8600M GT GPUs will fail.
2. You can prolong this by not cycling the temperatures, hot, cold, hot, cold.
3. Apple will offer a extended warranty, and replace the logic boards when they fail.
I have an interesting theory, also..
If there is an integrated Intel GMA X3100, could it be used, and switched on and off, like the 9400M/9600M GT combo?

Can anyone advise whether or not all this would apply to the base line of current MacBook Pro Unibodies? I.e. the one without the extra GPU?

My 8600 died last week and I had my logic board replaced and got it back yesterday. Has nvidia made any changes to the 8600 though? Or is the new one they put the exact same and will fail again in ~15 months...right when the 3+yr warranty on free replacement expires? I don't want to have to deal with this problem in the future.

"If the NVIDIA graphics processor in your MacBook Pro has failed, or fails within three years of the original date of purchase, a repair will be done free of charge, even if your MacBook Pro is out of warranty."

The integrated card is sort of like an unofficial failsafe. It's kinda like when you have a tower and the 8600 is in the PCI-E/AGP port and the Intel driver is an onboard vga port, but we can't control its actions directly. The only time the system will revert to it is when there is an issue. Atleast thats the behavior i've seen.

From what I have read, Apple/NVIDIA have made no changes to the GPU - they're replacing it with the same faulty GPU. It's pretty crappy but if it fails again, it's going to be repaired again and again until the 3 years is up.

From what I can gather, it seems that the load on your graphics card (screen saver, etc.) does not impact the life of your card nearly as much as sleep/wake/sleep/wake cycles. Is this correct?

Yup hot/cold cycles are the most affective variables

Another MBP 8600M GT failure

I originally posted in another thread, before finding this one where it should have been posted. Chalk up another one for the record, another 8600M GT failure. I had a good applecare experience but it was still several days without the MBP. I have a MBP 15" rev.4,1, 2.5ghz 6GB/200GB@7200, Nvidia 8600GT 512MB. I had no issues for the first 18months of ownership (first owner). Last week upon opening, the computer was burning hot to touch, fans running like crazy. The screen only came on once after that, immediately after a SMC reset. After that, nothing. I called applecare, they were great, walked me through it and sent an overnight box. I had it to them that next day, and they repaired it within hours (I could see their progress online). They shipped out the same night and I received it back in hand, repaired, with a total turnaround of 4 days. VERY IMPRESSIVE I could not imagine better service.

They replaced the
1) Logic Board due to video issues
2) Top Case including trackpad
3) 1 2GB RAM chip (faulty)

I am curious as to whether they replaced other things as well.
Iloggenius already answered some of my questions, but I wanted to ask other owners who have had this replaced, whether you noticed any changes in your Boot or Video ROM.

Here are my current stats, could you compare them to yours and let me know if they all correspond, or whether they are all different before/after repair? Thanks in advance,
brom

**Boot ROM Version: MBP41.00C1.B03
**SMC Version (system): 1.27f2
GeForce 8600M GT **Revision ID: 0x00a1
**ROM Revision: 3212

Just thinking how lame this is. People who originally bought AppleCare should get an ADDITIONAL 3 years on the warranty.

I had my 2007 MBP board replaced when the GPU died. I wonder what my chances are that it will go dead within the next few years... or should eBay my machine now...

hey brom - how come they replaced the top case ?

I got them to change my keyboard by telling them there were "intermittant" issues with some of the keys. I figured that since my logic board failed, might as well get them to replace as much of it as possible. :)

In truth, I spilled my Vodka Orange Smoothie all over my keyboard when I was drunk.

In truth, you scammed them. This is just one of the reasons why we as consumers will have to continue to pay a premium, because of dishonest customers.

Ack, I think my MacBook Pro might have this video card. It's a 2007 model Santa Rosa 2.4GHz. I am almost positive it's the 8600M.

Might as well make this official...

Age - 27 months (owned it for 26)

Model - 2.2 ghz Core 2 Duo 8600m GT (128 vram).

SMC version - 1.2 (I did not update to 1.3)

I was hoping I could get another year out of this machine. This is quite disappointing to say the least. Died at a bad time, too. I kept it running most of the time and manually cranked the fans when needed so it would keep cooler when playing DotA. She ran well and 100% day in and day out. All day every day. So, yea...
:(

HI,
my MBPs GPU fails every now and then but after a hard restarting the machine one or two times it is always ok again. (Of course this may change one day)
Do you now if this behavior is enough to get a repair from Apple or does the GPU need to be really dead? Because I'd like to do a "preemptive repair" when the Laptop isn't in heavy use like right now for example.

 No sense in doing a preemptive repair because Apple certainly won't do a preemptive repair. You can, however, go to ifixit and order a new motherboard for $700 or $800 but those motherboards have the same defective GPU. Quite a waste of money if you ask me. I could build a whole new Phenom X4 mid tower with that cash.
