what do you mean by blue cast...?
does the entire screen go blue? is the system responsive then?

I do not know about macjunk(ie)'s case but for me, it is like somebody putting a transparent sheet in blue on top of the LCD screen.

Anybody knows the cause? Is it due to the defective GPU?

My mbp started acting up again. Its happened three times in the last two days and its quite random.

I can't quite pinpoint what is causing it. I am not sure it is heat related because I've run several benchmarks on the mac side and on my windows 7 bootcamp partition and all seems normal. Then I played COD4 for and hour or so no problem. It seems to only happen on my mac side and since SL update.

If my gpu craps out, this will me the second time on my Santa Rosa.

Has anyone else seen red noise before gpu failure?

I had a similar problem. In windows I could play and do whatever I wanted and no problem, but in OS X the computer would freeze, display pixels incorectly or the GPU would fail on the spot.

I found out that it was due to a new ram chip I installed to boost my macs ram from 1g to 2g.

Solution: I took out the ram chip and now I am back at 1g. If you upgraded your mac recently it could be because of the new hardware. Why I dont know, but try taking it out and see how your system behaves.

do you mean as if you suddenly had a different color calibration scheme?

Well actually the issue has gotten worse. It now does it during boot up and/or in OSX or Windows. Also I have done no upgrade recently. My mbp is currently at an icenter in town and they are saying that its the lcd that's bad, but the lcd was replaced one year ago by apple. They want to charge me 620 Euros!

So I contacted apple and they are suppose to make an exception in my case even though I am way out of warranty. I will now be on my 5th lcd panel and second logicboard.

UPDATE:

Ok so Apple made a big exception and is replacing my old Santa Rosa with the 2.8Ghz 15" unibody w/ the matte screen option and one year warranty:eek::D, so I can't really complain too much. Apple service and support is quite remarkable really, but then again we pay for this service.

I love my old classic mbp and I'm going to miss it! But with all the issues I have had I think its time to move on. Plus I hope I can retire myself from this never ending thread soon.:D

you lucky lucky lucky lucky guy.....

Ahh I've just had my screen go red and distorted and have just stumbled across this thread so I'm guessing that this is a 8600m problem. I have a MPB purchased in June 2007 (Santa Rosa release). The screen has now returned to normal but I guess it is only a matter of time before it comes back!?

I'd better start reading through this thread....

If you have the 8600m then that might be why since their defective. Maybe apple could replace your graphics card (although they'll have to replace the whole board) with a different model.

Mine also did exactly that - going to system preferences and reloading the CCS worked. But why did it do that?

Exactly, no idea why it does it, but it does it. It has happened to me only a few times, but it's still annoying. I've tried to see if it happens under the same circumstances, but I can only remember happening 2 times after a long unused period while it was on, and another time after connecting it to a projector. It has happened at least another two times in the past 21 months so 5 total, but like I said, it doesn't seem to happen after a specific event, it's just random.

well mine is all back to normal.
So people think that the problem can be caused from having random heat levels, as in not consistent that make the graphics cards eventually play up... ?
I have used my MBP (late 07) to do a lot of gaming and media work and recently before it died was watching maybe a few to many HD (720p) movies using plex media player to an external projector...

anyway, im trying to take precautions and now use that 'fan control' app and made them constantly spin at 3200 minimum. trying to control temps better, would this help at all ??
or is it all in vein.

Still got 1 more yr warranty on it happenin again though.
cheers

I get about 3 to 4 random red lines oriented to the left of the screen that go from bottom to top when pressure is applied to the screen. For instance, closing the lid or opening it more. I think this is an LCD issue though, not my video card. 8600m GT 128mb vram

I am curious. For those of us who have a 2007 macbook pro 15" with a 8600 card. When does apples 'extended' warranty pertaining to this issue officially end? Can someone give me an estimated date? Thanks~

Apple extends the warranty for 8600M GT owners 3 years from the date of purchase for gpu specific failures.

However if you read toward the bottom apple states:
Apple will continue to evaluate the repair data and will provide further repair extensions as needed.

So they will most likely repair or replace your unit after that point. My theory is that Apple wants to rid itself of this issue and eliminate these older units in circulation by giving you a comparable replacement, as they did in my case.

It truly is a testament of how serious an issue this is for Apple. Then again my mbp problems stemmed much further, resulting in countless display failures, a bad gpu, and one faulty superdrive. So in the end I think the lack of quality control on these old classics is now costing Apple more money than its really worth.

I really hope that Apple has cleaned up there act a little on these newer unibodies.

My repair was fairly painless. I brought my MBP in to the Fifth Avenue store on Monday morning and the repair was complete by Wednesday morning. I thought they send these things out but apparently at Fifth Avenue they do the repair in house. When I picked up my computer on Wednesday night, the genius who helped me was the one who actually did the repair. He actually works the overnight shift so they apparently do repairs 24/7. I was happy to get it back in 2 days since I was originally quoted a 7 day turn around. I asked him how long it takes to replace the board and he said he does it in about 30 minutes.

My only complaint is that I notice that the battery is loose. There is movement when I push on the battery and it make a noise that wasn't there before. Other than that it looks ok. Now I need to open it again to replace the stock HDD again.

Different Experience

So far my experience is a little different. After calling ALL the retail stores within a 4 hour drive, the Indianapolis Store said they would replace the board in house, that day, if it was indeed the logic board failure. So I made the reservation and drove there bright and early this morning. However the "Genius" said NO WAY, It HAS to be shipped out. He wouldn't even check with the tech or manager despite being told differently just last night. Absolutely no working with me.

I explained to him, just as I did last night, that it was a several hour drive for me and that if it couldn't be done that day (I would have waited up to 8 hrs), I would have just shipped the damn thing in to begin with.

What a lack of customer service. As I check the Apple-Support-Repair Status, 12 hours later, they still haven't even shipped it out to depot level.

Not happy at all.

Sorry to hear about your experience. Unfortunately I have been to the genius bar with my MBP many times and they have been generally very painless. My computer is 2 1/2 years old and is on its forth battery as well as the GPU problem that was just fixed. With Windows 7 now out I would definitely consider a high end business computer for my next machine just because I don't believe a computer should be in the shop every 6 months for some issue. In my many years with Thinkpads I've never had a problem and they were built like tanks. On the other hand I have several Mini's which have been bullet proof thus far and which I would never part with.

similar experience

Well My unit (MBP 2.2 GHz Santa Rosa) died on me last week. For the last week or so the graphics were so slow that I had to restart the machine to get it fixed. Anyway, I closed the lid at night, and next morning it was hot as a pan. Next day I went to the LA grove store and they said they would replace the logic board because of the Nvidia issue. Now I received the MBP back and I opened it to pop my HD in and I see that I still have the old logic board because it's still dusty so guess they did not change it. Also now my MBP shuts itself like twice a day for no good reason. So I got another genius appointment for today.

My question is; is the so called logic board is same as the mother board?

given the change in behavior under pressure, this sounds like a physical issue not a gfx issue.
