my uMBP just failed ... identical symptoms to my last gen with the 8600 gpu ... apple has the notebook ... lets see what they do..

My 07 mbp just died, symptoms point to the 8600m being the culprit.

Called Apple Australia, got my case number... Will be taking it to a service centre this afternoon.

HI,
my MBPs GPU fails every now and then but after a hard restarting the machine one or two times it is always ok again. (Of course this may change one day)
Do you now if this behavior is enough to get a repair from Apple or does the GPU need to be really dead? Because I'd like to do a "preemptive repair" when the Laptop isn't in heavy use like right now for example.
Doc

I think Apple has a way of determining that the GPU is having issues before it actually fails catastrophically. You may want to send it to them via applecare and have them take a look at it (even if you dont' have apple care it's warrantied for three years).

My '07 2.2 SR GPU died last Friday. It's with Apple right now getting a new logic board.

From reading the posts here, seems like Apple is replacing the faulty GPU with another faulty GPU, so it's just another problem waiting to happen.

My penryn MBP(Early 2008) died on Monday. It booted up but no display. Took it to the apple store and it didn't even boot up. I got a bit scared when the Genius took about 15 minutes trying to test something. I figured I had to pay for it to get the logic board replaced. Fortunately, they will replace the GPU for free.

The bad thing about that is I wrote my 7 page paper on it yesterday and I had to write the whole damn thing again to get it turned in on time. :(

That's a good idea. I will wait as long as possible in order to increase the chance to get a new GPU without the issues. Fortunately my Apple Care doesn't end before 2011.

so i got my uMBP back from apple today after they replaced the logic board, screen and memory and it still artifacts like crazy on simple web browsing and goes even wilder on graphic and video work ... then i said for the heck of it to load a fresh copy of SL and still same thing ... what do i do??:confused::confused:

Call them up, explain your situation, get them to fix it and start asking for compensation for your troubles.

don't do that. I waited until every single component of my machine needed replacement except the HDD and CD drive. Later upon reading these boards, I discovered that had I been nitpicky and sent my computer in for every single issue, it would have been sent in 4-5 times. They give you a new computer if you have that many problems...

I just got my 2.2 MBP back from Apple. They replaced the logic board, (and battery and display due to separate issues) but now the moment I turn it on the fans rev up to 6000 rpm and don't quit.

After logging into my admin, temps are fine (The GPU diode is 46C and the hottest) and the processes are low.

I have done the SMC reset, PRAM.... but still getting this issue. Anyone have similar experiences? This isn't Apple/nVidia's way of preventing this problem in the future is it?

I have a 2.4ghz mbp from august 2007. It went black yesterday. Should I just make genius bar appt asap or call the 800#? I just don't want to get charged for this. Not to mention repair time. They probably don't do those in-house right? Can they diagnose it/give you an estimate right then for you? I don't want them to take it then try and say it is an LCD problem and charge me for it.

Got my MBP back today. I'm surprised it took almost a week for it to be repaired though. It's just replacing the logic board. I could have done that in an hour or less, I think. But the "Genius" told me one of the ram couldn't run one of his test so he thought it was defective so he took it out. I thought, well that's just great.

So I got home and it booted up fine and then I got my first kernel panic. :(
It wouldn't boot up and I heard three chimes. I put the other memory card and now it's all fast and all okay. Some "genius" they are if they thought that one of the memory card wouldn't even work. I see all of 2GB on here.

I don't understand the thermal stress vs high temp debate on what is actually causing the problem.

If it is thermal stress that is causing it, rapidly cooling it after stress on GPU would be more damaging to the GPU meaning that better more efficient cooling would be detrimental, no?

Fans spinning at 2000rpm would bring the temps back down to normal at a much more gradual rate as opposed to fans spinning at 6000rpm.

I had mine repaired 3 times, and then I finally gave up getting a defective part again. I had my case escalated and I finally convinced them to give me a replacement 2.66 with the BTO matte screen, good luck to everyone here, cause I went through enough trouble getting mine repaired.

Did you have a warranty still when they replaced your machine?

To be fair to Apple, you don't have scores of computers lined up to repair.

Though if you computer comes back broken, as for compensation.

Well the apple store near Pleasonton, CA isn't that busy.

And I did ask for compensation after they claimed my memory stick didn't work when it clearly did when I put it in. They were asking for $89 for replacing the stock 2GB memory. Hah.
Another thing I noticed, is now my iSight isn't working. I'm out of warranty so I can't do anything about that and when I told them this, they said they couldn't do anything about it.

I'm just dissapointed, I guess, because I expected Apple to have better service than this.

No, the only thing I had was the extension of the warranty for the 8600m. I just kept letting them know that what they were replacing was the SAME defective part, over and over again.

help!

I bought my 17'' mbp on Nov/07 at BestBuy, they had to replace it two times right out of the box because the first two times they gave me the computer, they were defective, it wasn't until I went to another store where they had a real apple genius and asked him what was wrong, he told me the models they sold me were the sample computer they had out for everyone to see/touch. I immediately went back to BestBuy, requested my money back and returned with the apple genius guy and asked them if they had a new, sealed 17''; he told me they did so I bought it, along with the applecare.

A few months ago I started having some problems with it, I took it to an authorized service provider near my town, it took them one month to replace the screen and the battery, since the latter one started to inflate for some unknown reason. They gave it back and everything was "Ok".

Now I've noticed that sometimes the graphics lags a bit, and when I'm using safari, I notice that when I open the Top Sites menu, I can see for a moment the scrambled graphics issue. The thing is that I already updated to SL, 10.6.2, and even Safari 4.0.4 today. Still I get the same scrambled graphics. It has the 8600gmt graphic card also.

Since I feel like I've been screwed enough , and I feel like is just a matter of time for my computer to go all dead like the ones from a lot of people here, I'm wondering, should I start complaining right now at apple? And even if I do, should I expect for a suitable solution? I mean , even if they give me a new computer, I've reading here that all of them still have issues to no end.

Why is Apple so "The number one on customer satisfaction", when clearly they have a lot of issues?

Please help?...

Thanks in advance.

Yes start complaining.

If your graphic board goes suddenly like mine did, after over a year of graphic artifacts and problems, they will try and tell you it's the logic board and you will have to pay. If you have a track record of complaining about the graphic artifacts and blank screen on start from sleep then they can't argue when the board fries because of the graphics chip issues. They might try, but you'll have your history of graphics related complaints to refer to. Get case numbers for them too.

dang it, just happened to me as well. But am a wee bit concerned as I don't have any warranty left...
But after reading the Apple Support article they say I'm still covered within the 3 yr of purchase window. :p few http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
Ringing up now,

Cheers for the info
update:
yay, found out its gfx card problem and they'll fix it fa free. (as warranty has ended)
I'll have to do some more reading as to why this actually happened and so it doesn't happen again but I will admit that I have been using the MBP alot recently for watching HD movies to an external monitor (projector) and constantly switching external displays (another DVI monitor) Guess the card just couldn't take the pressure/load anymore.

Cheers

Sell it once it comes back. If it happens again after the 3 years is up it's not covered.

Cheers,
