Can the symptoms of this fault manifest itself by giving a garbled output to an ACD every so often? Three times i've had a garbled display (and yes, the DVI connector was seated properly!).

Just don't buy any of that Dell junk.

yea, dell's now a joke for building machines

there idea's suck , there customer support cannot even speak english , they want a premium for there machines , the machines "look" cheap @ 499 , to make the machine any good you have to add $400 in extra's,

i dont buy into dell trash

Sell it once it comes back. If it happens again after the 3 years is up it's not covered.

Cheers,

well got it back fixed in 2 days, nice.
not sure id get much selling this MBP... prob under a grand
i bought it on 10/11/07 so only got 1 more yr warranty on same gfx prob happening again.
cheers

True, I sold mine for $1000 in early 2009 so I'm sure values have eroded, however, with the refurb 2.8 w/o SD card uMBP is $1699 so you may not have to pay so much more once it sells even if you only get $800-$900. Besides, the fact that there is still a year of support available might even help sell it, though on ebay most of the buyers don't even know about the nvidia issue.

Cheers,

My mbp started acting up again. Its happened three times in the last two days and its quite random.

I can't quite pinpoint what is causing it. I am not sure it is heat related because I've run several benchmarks on the mac side and on my windows 7 bootcamp partition and all seems normal. Then I played COD4 for and hour or so no problem. It seems to only happen on my mac side and since SL update.

If my gpu craps out, this will me the second time on my Santa Rosa.

Has anyone else seen red noise before gpu failure?

What is the latest status?

Hello. Apple replaced the motherboard of my santa rosa MBP a year ago due to the 8600m GT video card problem. Within about a month, I got a few cases of video problem (mainly the whole screen turned blue. Think of it as if somebody covered the LCD screen with a transparent sheet in blue). These cases were occasions and once I rebooted the computer, the MBP returned to normal. Last week, I got the same problem again.

When I asked the service center last year if they put in a motherboard with a GPU that is not defected, they told me that they did not know. I asked for manufactured date of the board and they had no idea.

Anybody knows if Apple is still replacing the motherboards with defected GPU or have they fixed the GPU issue with NVIDIA and exchange motherboards that do not have defective GPU?

The Video Just Died on my SR, Should I Install Original HD before Genius Visit?

I believe I just experienced the 8600m GT video failure. I replaced my stock drive with a WD scorpio black drive 320gb over a year ago. My 2.2GHZ SR was purchased in June 2007 when this model was originally released. I have a recent time machine back up of my data, but I'm more concerned about someone denying warranty service because I swapped out my drive.

What have you guys been doing when bringing your machine in for service? Does it matter that my original drive has not been updated for over a year?

THanks for your help.

My logic board was swapped out under the 2 year scheme (after a lot of arguing, they wanted me to pay for it) a few months ago after it totally died after a long illness involving many weird graphical artifacts.

It is still a little tetchy but much better than before. I have started getting the blue tint again though too. I find it goes away if you go into Screens in system prefs. You don't have o do anything just open it and the screen colour returns to normal.

Apple told me at the time of replacement that they were giving a "revision 2" logic board that has no problem with the graphics chip.

Time will tell I suppose.

The revision 2 line is a load of crap. If you search this trend you will find people with the revision 2 who have experienced failure. I have had it happen to me. I am starting to see graphics irregularities and they put a revision 2 board in my computer in march. It is just not bad enough yet to fail the tests. But when it does i will wait tell the next update and try to get me a new computer as the motherboard has already been replaced once and the hard drive have been replaced twice and the fan once.

They replaced the motherboard of my SR MBP around last December. There have been a few instances of blue tint (something like transparent sheet in blue placed in front of the LCD screen). The problems disappeared after rebooting. In one case, I did not do any 3D intensive stuffs. Only browsing non-graphics-intensive websites. I am not sure if the motherboard they replaced is rev 2. Is it worth to ask them to replace the motherboard again?
I bought the computer in summer 2007. So far, the LCD, battery and motherboard have been replaced. Besides the video issue, I also need to get the lcd latch, power supply and bulge (near the power connector on the case) fixed. Can I ask for a new MBP?

they're not going to give you a new computer. don't believe the stories on these boards. I had every single component of the computer replaced except the CD drive and HD - still no new computer.

Ok so I brought mine in to a authorized service center here in Amsterdam. I'm supposed to receive a call this week on the diagnosis. Although we all know what the problem is. The fact that my mbp is a mid '07 Santa Rosa, and that the logic board was replaced by Apple a year ago this past summer, I think I am among the first to experience double failure on these 8600M GT's. My theory is that these gpu's have roughly one year's worth of use before signs of failure become evident. Pretty sad really...

oh and this thread will never die...lol

I feel quite lucky to have avoided any problems so far with the 8600GT ...
Mine is a 2.2 ghz SR MBP sept 07 with 8600gt 128mb - 27 months old anyone beat this record? :p

I bought mine in late June 2007 and just brought it into my local Apple Store due to GPU failure. Mine lasted 29 months and I never did any gaming on it. If the new boards don't last (as has been mentioned), then its a real shame. This machine has a lot of years left in it.

Throw another 8600 victim into the count! Had my early 2008 Pro die on me out of the blue. I closed the lid to put it to sleep and when I opened it again later on, it never woke up and refused to boot up again; at least it went peacefully! Seemed like the typical symptoms: powers on, black screen, doesn't boot.

So, I sent it in to Apple for repair while taking advantage to mention everything else that was bothering me about the machine previously (dead pixels and these ugly smudges behind the screen, dvd drive spitting out discs randomely, missing a rubber foot, blah blah blah). Many calls (which were pleasant, aside from being told they had to wait over a week for a part) and 18 days later, the machine was sent back with a new logic board, display, and dvd drive. Of course it came back with everyone's favorite suicidal GPU, which I was told repeatedly by several Apple Experts, won't fail (yeah, right).

Interestingly enough, the revision ID and ROM Revision numbers are exactly identical to what I had on the GPU before, which leads me to believe it's just going to happen again based on what's been reported in this thread. Weren't some of you getting logic board replacements that had the same GPU but a different set of revision numbers, or did my mind make this up?

i'm getting a blue cast on mine, but it will correct itself via software if i go to the system preferences.......still.......
