As a shock as this is, there are still people out there with dumb phones! Not everyone has e-mail on their phone, so you want to MMS it.

Does everyone you know sit in front of a computer or have a smart phone? If yes, then maybe you have a point, but if no (more likely) than MMS is a must if you want to send or receive pictures.

My wife and many of my friends have had MMS capable phones for years, but not smart phones.

My wife just got an iPhone on friday and still wants MMS so that she can picture message with me in an easier format.

It's a helluva lot easier to send a picture or video in an MMS thread on the iPhone than to exit the messaging application, go into the camera roll, email a picture, then go back to the messaging application.

A lot of folks with similar logic to yours added that MMS was unnecessary and that Apple would never do it because email trumps MMS.

Guess you guys were wrong.

MMS gateways anyone? I've been doing SMS and MMS for the last year with no messaging plan by using email gateways. I send emails to 1234567890@txt.att.net or 1234567890@mms.att.net and they go right to all the dumb phones out there. They respond to my emails as they would a normal text and I get them perfectly. Sooo... Yea. Unnecessary.

Yes, everyone should go through all of the hassle of setting that up and getting all of their friends and family to set that up.

Or, AT&T could just support MMS now that the iPhone finally supports it.

You guys arguing that MMS is totally unnecessary have had your say and you have LOST this battle, if you were right then Apple never would have added MMS to the iPhone.

Lack of MMS on the iPhone was cited as a major reason the phone didn't do better in markets outside the US too, but I guess all those foreigners who have had more sophisticated cells than those typically available in the US for years just don't understand that they don't need MMS either.

There is no denying that it'll be nice when it's enabled. That's for sure. But it's far from a big deal. Obviously for 2 years people have been buying the iPhone despite the lack of MMS.

Also, I made an Apple Script in this thread https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/633361/ to set up SMS and MMS gateways for your whole Address book automatically. I use Ymail so I get push SMS for free.

Yes, you can send mms the way you describe, but when they respond to your message with a pic you will not get it (unless they know to send it to your email account (if they can even do that).

Wow, I feel sorry for AT&T reps.

You feel...SORRY...For the reps? lmfao. Nobody should feel sorry for them imo. AT&T had equal if not more time than all the other carriers to roll the stuff out and they fell flat on their faces.

For what it's worth, the more harassing calls they get, the better. It'll get them off their asses and into gear.

"Late summer". Pathetic.

I hear

I do, too. You people are ridiculous. They said at the end of summer, stop making the call queue longer because you're too damn impatient to wait for the official release.

Download MyAccountsToGo while waiting for MMS to come out...it will take your mind off of MMS.

"I don't like waiting"....ROFL! Why don't you get all 9-year-old-brat about something that matters, like world peace, an end to nuclear weapons, viable leadership for Apple. This is laughable!

Right, because the people working at the call center answering all of these damn MMS questions have control over when MMS is enabled. And I bet the janitor who cleans crap off toilets at the AT&T call center was personally involved in the initial negotiations with Apple before the iPhone was announced.

What a dumb comment. The people working at the call center want MMS as much as you do because they either have iPhones and want to send MMS as well, or are just sick and tired of answering your dumb questions. Maybe when the higher ups at AT&T are answering phones, everyone calling in about MMS will matter, but since that'll never happen, stop calling and leave the queues open for people with real questions.

Exactly instead of being able to higher technicians and what not to upgrade the network they have to invest in CSRs to listen to this crap. No wonder it takes AT&T forever to implement new features…

Nothing works better than applying a little pressure and if an in-house ruckus is what it takes than so be it.

wow, the fact that you used the word higher instead of hire is astounding.

I dont mind waiting, but why then would att send me this message from 443-8

"AT&T Free Msg: Connect with friends and family by adding pictures and videos to your text messages. Don't forget you can also instant message from your phone."

I don't think you're starting much of a ruckus here. After a CSR gets off the phone with a customer after asking about MMS on iPhone, they probably don't even mention it to anyone, and continue on to the next call. CSRs also get rated on average handle time, so if they spend only a minute on a call with you to tell you to wait for MMS, then that decreases their AHT and management likes that, so if you think that there's going to be an in-house ruckus in the call center from all of the MMS calls, you're wrong. Anyone who has ever worked in any type of call center before (and I have) loves the quick and easy calls

I've seen a few others that have got this message, however no one seems to have got MMS because of it (other than hacking, that is).

So you don't think AT&T knows how much people are displeased with the decisions they've made? You don't think that some of these tech site reviews for the 3GS calling AT&T out on still not having these features is making them (product and service) look bad?

Boy I don't know, I just wouldn't want to be in AT&T's spot eight now. They brought all this amongst themselves. And now their call centers are getting bombarded and they could have prevented all this by not being lazy on the issue at hand.

That's where I stand so no. I don't feel sorry for the reps. They knew what was coming when their superiors made these choices.

Maybe it never occurred to anyone that if AT&T flipped the switch right now and a million teenagers started pounding the network with unlimited picture and video messages that it could put a major strain on the network and even potentially crash part of it?

AT&T is trying to finish an $8 Billion upgrade to the network and in all likelihood that's a key reason they aren't ready for MMS yet.

Well see there we go. Maybe there was something bigger.

I don't have a lot of sympathy for AT&T, but if the reality is that the network is not ready, then it's not ready.

AT&T might love all the subscribers they get due to the iPhone but they probably hate the load it puts on their network.

Pretty much any other carrier in the US would be similarly in trouble from the load generated by 3M+ iPhone subscribers with unlimited data plans and MMS to boot.

Wait....you mean maybe there is some sort of logic and reasoning behind the decision to wait on MMS and it's not just AT&T being a big bad evil corporation trying to steal everyone's money?

If AT&T enabled MMS when 3.0 was released and a bunch of tweens sending pictures to each other crashed the network, these people would still be complaining. AT&T couldn't win either way.

And I already know someone is going to say "But [insert carrier here] in [insert country here] enabled MMS and their network didn't crash!" Well, AT&T by far has the most iPhone subscribers in the world putting a bigger strain on the network; plus, the US is a larger country by area so they have more towers, switches and data centers to upgrade than other carriers.

They know they look bad. That's why they're bringing out MMS, in late summer. It's not flipping one switch, IT'S NOT READY YET. You think they enjoy making their customers dissatisfied? Get some logic.

The reps have no control over those choices! In fact, no one should be calling the reps about MMS on the iPhone because everyone knows it's not supported yet. Stop wasting their time.

ATT not having MMS ready for 3.0 has nothing to do with network strain. It is to do with the iphone having a specific texting plan.

Changes to the database take time, and testing to implement. That's why you will see this activated in a few markets first and then rolled out to everyone.

That might be true, but having worked with SQL quite a bit I have a hard time believing that the iPhone has some kind of mysterious voodoo that makes it harder to mark the account or update the account info.
