haha just waiting for my email back of o2 so i can go apple store! :)

I think its worth emailing / calling till you get the 'right' person....

the emails I was getting on Saturday were vague, so I phoned upgrades on
0800 1313136
and after a couple of attempts I reached someone who took it seriously and gave me the email address of her manager

lesson being to keep trying !

Good LUCK ! :D

Tell us how you get on.

TBH I have rang O2 customer services and they said I could have a iPhone 3g upgrade in an apple store, although when I rang an apple store they said they would NOT upgrade me.

I think both points are correct: Apple won't do an upgrade, but it now seems that O2 will close your old contract without charge (in effect an upgrade).

anyway I will report back tomorrow as to how I get on

this is my last exchange of emails so you can decide for yourself:

"Matthew,

Yes, all is correct you can cancel the original contract as soon as you put
your new sim card in the iphone.

Regards.

Many thanks for your reply.

So I can do the following:

Buy a new iPhone with 18month contract from Apple

Put my old sim card in so that I retain my old number

Close the old contract and move to the new contract ( in effect
upgrade).

That's is correct yes ?

Sorry if I am sounding dumb, but I have heard so many conflicting
stories that I want to make sure I have it correct so that I don't get
stuck with two contracts.

I'm planning on going to the Apple store tomorrow morning (still had
no luck at the local o2 store), so if you could confirm the above
tonight that would be great.

many thanks for your help,

Matthew

I've asked for clarification as well lol. Would be good to think it could work. After all, we're not trying to cheat anyone out of anything, just to get a phone in the colour we want for pete's sake!

Good luck tomorrow, hope you get the phone you want. :)

Edit: I think the sticking point for me is being able to retain my number. I would be worried if I did all this and then when cancelling the old contract the number went with it.

And I just looked, Kingston Apple store have whites in and I'm going to Kingston tomorrow with the monster-in-law. A white phone wold have made the trip so much more bearable...

you're exactly right - i'm still starting a new 18month contract with o2, so they are getting my money !

now that i have the email from a team leader - and his mobile number to complain like hell if there is a problem - i can't see how the can get out of it....

Also, if you do get stuck with 2 contracts, you can change the person the contract is under on the O2 website(change it someone you know thats under 18) and you should be able to get out of that contract very easilly).

Ok so if we turn up at the Apple Store tomorrow they will insist we take along two forms of ID, run a credit check and sign us up to a new contract. This phone will be activated in-store with a new sim. We then go home and swap out or old sim and reactivate the 3G iPhone again in iTunes thus giving our old number back to the 3G iPhone.

Only problem is we signed for a second contract instore ??

Correct: however what I have been told in the email I've posted is that they will void my earlier contract leaving me with just the new 18month contract - in effect an upgrade.

WARNING: I'm only going to do this because I've got the email saying I can, I'm not suggesting anyone else do it unless they also get proof in black and white

Have you any idea how many disgruntled Brits are going to be hanging around here tomorrow to hear what happened? :D ;)

okay just got a new email from O2 upgrades

"The below e-mail explains that you can take out the Iphone from an Apple
store and place your existing sim card in without a termination fee. It
also refers to the process in which to activate the iphone on to your
existing contract.

Any further questions please don't hesitate to ask."

can you copy and paste the email here?? which department did you email? this is exactly the solution that i am looking for and i will email myself if you would be so kind as to give me the address. many thanks

i've pasted the email already in this thread, but without the actual email address - its an individuals email address so i think its wrong to start distributing it.

But the process went as follows:
1. start asking about buying at apple and having your existing contract cancelled - use the customer help form on the O2 site.
2. you will get fobbed off with no but keep questioning and explain you have queued at an o2 store etc but were sold out
3. in the email reply from o2 will probably be the general phone number for upgrades - start calling this and keep trying until you get someone helpful
4. the helpful person at upgrades will probably get you to email a team leader there - bingo !
5. well its bingo as long as they reply yes as hey have done to me

many thanks. let us know if you are successful.

Is your intention to keep your existing number or just to get your initial contract cancelled?

excellent, i'm the same. If you succeed then i think a trip to the apple store is in order for a nice white 16gb!

Unfortunately at the moment the iphone 3G 16GB in White is only available in the Apple store to new connections only

That is the bit that annoys me. What the hell, why do we not get the choice of a white one? I know that they want to give the impression of exclusivity with the white, but not giving O2 any at all seems a bit much, stopping all existing iPhone customers and O2 customers from owning one. Not to mention the fact that O2 are saying they are completely out of stock everywhere whilst Apple are saying "The Apple Retail Store likely has your iPhone 3G in stock." Favouritism to new customers and Apple Stores much? No wonder O2 knackered their servers so that Apple were left with egg on their faces in their retail stores!

I think many of us are keeping an eye on this thread. Let us know how you get on!

Guess it didn't go so well? Shame I was counting on this working rather than waiting for O2 to get their act in gear.

It's really annoying that in Lakeside there's 2 O2 stores and 2 CPW both sold out and an Apple store with LOADS of stock.

Seems to me that theres more people wanting to upgrade than new signups? Not heard anything official though.
