Nice one. Checking the apple store stock: apart from exeter (no 16's in black) every UK Store had everything for sale tomorrow.

Could i just ask in what order do you do what you did as im doing the same.

is this correct or is 2 and 3 the other way round

1. purchase phone from apple store, sign up to new contract, get it activated and be given phone number
2. Come home and plug into itunes to activate at home or whatever it does
3. phone up o2 and get current number migrated over, this canceling any old contract you had with them

Yeah what you said is right. Apart from you miss out step 2 because the iphone works straight out of the store.

Im still using the "new number" that my iphone came with because the old one has not been switched over yet but it should be sometime tomorrow.

In answer to the previous post, i was a non-iphone existing 02 customer who was out of the minimum term of my contract.

02 just convert the old contract into a new iphone one

Yup, this is exactly what they did for me.

Batfink, you need to activate your iPhone on iTunes in order to be able to download software 'over the air', I did this after speaking to O2, but I don't think iTunes has anything to do with the SIM card, just the iPhone hardware (registering you serial no to your account etc.)

As stated before it is different for existing O2 non iPhone customers getting upgrades at the Apple Store - especially if nearing or at the end of their contract.

Current O2 first gen iPhone users have no such luck at the Apple Store.

Can we add to the title with something like "6months+ left on O2 contract"?

We all know that O2 are going to upgrade you anyway if you are near the end of your contract.

Regards

Yeah. These damned people at the end of their contracts - or in some cases not even on a contract at all - keep getting my hopes up.

Please, if you are a new customer or were at the end of your existing O2 contract, please refrain from posting "it worked for me" in this thread, since it is not really relevant to the thread at hand.

dropped by the Regents street store at 12.00 - only to be told the there was three hour wait ! so frustrating....

Well after much pleading with the guys at the Apple Store, I came away with...yep, the black one. Was hoping they'd swap it for white but no dice. Seems that Apple, CPW, o2 online and the o2 store are four separate entities. So upgraders, unless you can hold out, you're stuck with black for the foreseeable future.

Synching my new black now and trying to be grateful for it...

Well i have phoned O2 and at first the women said that the only way to transfer old Pay Monthly Number to New Iphone would be for her to send me a PAYG sim, and then transfer it to PAY MONTHLY sim as you cannot transfer a number from a Pay Monthly contract to a Pay Monthly contract?

I said this is not what i was told yesterday by a Customer Service adviser and that it would be a more simple precedure known as a 'Migration'

She made another call and said that the this may be possible but the team who deal with things such as this only work mon-fri so someone with more know will call be back on monday morning.

So annoyed.
(anyone else had the same problem?)

OK, I have an update for everyone on this.

Over the weekend I sent an email to someone at O2 explaining the confusion surrounding the current iPhone upgrade procedure and how, as an early iPhone adopter, I felt let down and badly treated by O2.

Anyway I got a phone call on Saturday morning from a senior O2 customer care person and he said that YES, I can go into an Apple shop, take out a new contract and terminate my old one without penalty and keep my old number! When I get the new phone I need to ring him direct rather than go through the normal channels.

Apparently when he was handed my email he was not sure of the situation so he needed to speak to someone else who confirmed that I could upgrade. It sounds like communications is not the strongest point within O2 at the moment.

I do not want to hand out the email of the O2 employee as he would get barraged with emails, but all I can suggest is for you to keep trying with the sales people and hopefully they will get clarification soon.

I will be off to Birmingham / London soon to get my shinny new iPhone and upgrade in an Apple store (sort of).

If you are thinking of doing this, make sure you get confirmation first, don't just buy one and then ring O2, you may get someone who does not know the situation and won't let you upgrade. The best thing will be to get a direct email / phone number for someone so you will be in no doubt of the situation.

If anyone rings O2 and asks the question about upgrading in Apple stores and are told no they can not upgrade, let me know and I will let O2 know when I activate my new phone.

What about price?

Sorry if this has already been covered in this thread.

By going through this method at the apple store, does it mean you miss out on getting you iPhone at the subsidized rate you would get by upgrading through O2?

No, you pay the normal O2 price. I will be getting a 16GB iPhone for £159 carrying-on with my current £35 p/m contract.

Well i am now not allowed to transfer over my old number (from out of contract pay monthly phone) onto my iphone. despite what i was told on the phone by apple on thursday.

What a complete shambles.
I can request a PAC and go onto a vodaphone/orange PAYG contract or something and then transfer it from another network (either that or keep my new iphone number and loose the number i have had for 7 years)

R.Youden, if you can set an entry in your diary to remind you in 9 months time, it's actually better for you to sign up to the £45/month contract and pay only £59 for the phone. Change back to £35 at the beginning of month 10, and you would have not only saved yourself £10, but also got the benefit of double the inclusive allowance for 9 months.

Well tomorrow is the day

I am off to the BullRing to pick up an iPhone 3G so we will see what happens. I have a direct number of someone within O2 to ring as soon as I get the new phone so I can transfer my old number, sounds good!

I will let you know how I get on......

Anyone interested in an unlocked iPhone 8GB in excellent condition

Well I went to the Bull Ring today and got my iPhone 3G 16GB in White. Tomorrow I need to ring back O2 and confirm the transfer of my old number.

I will let you know how that goes but so far, so good!

I can confirm that this process has worked 100%.

I now have a brand new 3G iPhone with my old number on it. My O2 contract has been reset to 18 months from now with no penalty. The only thing I have to ensure is that my old contract has been cancelled but that looks ok.

So to answer you question.

YES - you can upgrade your iPhone in an Apple store.

If anyone wants to know how to do this please PM me, I don't want to be responsible to the people who helped me to be flooded with messages from forum trolls. I will only provide the information if you have been a member of this forum since before the iPhone 3G launch. I think this is the fairest way.

R.Youden, Nessy,

Please tell me how you managed to do that. I am stuck with two contracts now. Thanks.

EDIT: Thanks Nessy for your reply.

Somehow i was able to cancel the new contract and make look like an upgrade.

However, i dont really recommend that, it was just luck.

you cancelled your new contract? What did o2 say to that?

:(

Thanks for emailing us about the new iPhone 3G.

As previously advised it's not possible to buy an iPhone from the Apple store and migrate this to your existing iPhone contract. If you buy an iPhone 3G from the Apple store you'll need to take out a new contract.

For iPhone stock updates please check online at:

http://www.o2.co.uk/iphone

I hope you find this information useful.

Important - When you email us please provide: your date of birth, postcode and mobile number as it helps us answer your query faster.

Kind regards

OKay, I dropped by the Regents Street store this morning at the queue didn't look to bad so I got in line. I queued for about 45 mins and the activation took and another 45 mins (partly cause we were chatting a lot of the time).

I've got a white 16GB - sold out of black, but I wanted white anyway.

So, as stated earlier in the thread, I have a first gen iPhone and the contract runs until April next year. But after many calls and email to O2, I have email from them stating that I can put my original sim into the new iPhone and that will cancel the contract (in affect an upgrade)

I'm gonna do that this evening so I will let you all know how I get on.

I just go off the phone to o2 talking to some rude o2 customer services advisor called 'Graham' telling me I cannot do it.

Yeah, this is one problem we have been having. The answer you get from O2 customer services varied considerably depending on the customer service rep you actually speak to. I was told only a few days ago by them that the white iPhone has not actually been released yet.

He was rude to me as well :(

Can you help me? Can you send me more details via pm? names etc?
