I can't wait to post my list of GUI-related glitches with 3.0 next week. I really, really wanna talk about them. 3.0 doesn't seem as polished as I would have thought coming from Apple....

Also, nobody can say "It's still only a beta!" anymore... hehe. I'm getting ready to post all of my findings. Next Wednesday, look for my thread about GUI glitches in 3.0.... 7 days remaining.

Definitely, a much better firmware and just a blast to mess around with. I can hardly wait for your thread SPAZ; I rather enjoy your views, b/c I tend to miss some things.....:D

I have a question regarding notes on the 3.0. Can you now tap on a phone # to start dialing or tap on a address to launch maps? This feature should have been there from the very beginning. Thanks

Yes you can! The data mapping in 3.0 is MUCH better than it was in 2.2.1. What you said works AND if you add a phone number to a note on your calendar event, it is now touchable (to make a call). Same in notes, or an email address.....Everywhere probably. I'll bet you they had to do that so that Spotlight would work with it.

I hope Apple updates the firmware very soon. This is most definitely not final release quality.

And how did battery life get worse?

You sure they're not just in your deleted folder in Gmail? Deleted items, by default, just get tagged as deleted in Gmail but still exist on the server, which is why you can still search for deleted mail in Gmail.

No it wasn't my Gmail account actually, it was a POP3 road runner account that I had on the phone. It was the only one that would show up in spotlight search after I had deleted them and emptied the trash. All the IMAP accounts I have (MobileMe, Gmail) do not show up when they have been deleted.

The app store is very slow for me on 3.0, it is having problems purchasing and installing apps. Other than that its been good, no crashes in any app yet which is a big step up after the constant crashes in 2.x (Safari would constantly crash)

None of my email accounts (all IMAP) were anywhere to be found. Had to reinstall each one, but the good thing was each account was setup, so that I wouldn't have to open each email to mark it as read. I had a total of three new emails after downloading 3.0 and activating my 3G iPhone......:cool::cool:

This is probably a stupid question, but what does the Gold Master stand for? Is it terms for "the final copy"? Is it the version that's going to be released Wednesday?

Someone posted earlier that it is the final copy from which all the other copies are developed.....:cool::cool:

In software development - before you can "print/make" lots of CD's or DVD's you need one master version to make all the copies from.

This is known as the Gold Master as it was usually made on a slightly more expensive gold coloured disc.

With the iPhone 3.0 this is gonna be the version that gets distributed by iTunes next week to all the public - unless some major last minute issue is found between now and then.

so i got this last night, overall pretty impressed. nothing major. i do like the new call log though. it was useless before, much better now.

Anyone gone from the latest 3.0 beta to the GM?

Is it much of an improvement over the last beta released?

Thanks

also you can now double push the home button and go straight to camera or search, a nice idea if you ask me

In mobile phone terms the GM is normally the version the manufacuter considers to be final final, and sends to the networks to do 7 days testing to make sure that it doesn't cause any network problems like catostrophic cell tower failure every time a handset is turned on (I was told by a telecoms engineer a UK network did find this happened once with a non-Apple handset. The engineer with it was driving down the M1 and one by one every tower crashed and reset on his drive).

It's been distributed so widely that I think we'd have noticed by now if were having terrible tower effects, so this is almost certainly it.

If 3.0 is launched on time next week no issues were found, because any changes need another 7 days testing.

Can't wait till Wednesday!!!

I've got the 3.0GM firmware file sitting on my desktop staring at me in the eyes but I want to wait till Wednesday. I've already updated my wife's 2Gen iPod Touch to 3.0GM and it went smooth!!!

I haven't gotten a straight answer after digging throught the web....Do these 3.0GM firmwares come with expiry dates? I realize that the 3.0GM has a good chance of what will be released next Wednesday....Anyone have any ideas, cause I want to install this 3.0 firmware in my 16Gb iphone 3G

"iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw"

So is the compatible with iPhone 3G and will it actually restore all of my data? I don't want to lose everything.

Sorry if it's been answered already but this thread is pretty long.

I have 2 questions about 3.0 if anyone would be so kind to answer them.

1) Is the 3.0 OS faster in general than 2.2.1? Or just the same?

2) Does 3.0 fix the 12hour clock bug? Where you restart your phone and the clock changes back to the 24hour one?

Thanks.

1) I find it to be smoother and slightly less laggy. However, your not gonna pick up your iPhone and say "WOW, this is so much faster!"

2) Yes, this is fixed. The clock will stay as a 12 hour clock.

yes iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw is the iPhone 3G version. and yes it does restore so you'll lose everything from your phone BUT if you make a backup in iTunes before hand then that backs up everything except media (i.e. contacts, calendar events, notes, safari bookmarks, settings, etc.). all of your media is on iTunes so you don't have to worry about that.

Don't forget you have to manually backup photos unless you tick the box, but mine still didnt backup, don't know why >?

Anyone else notice that you can now forward text messages you receive to other individuals by hitting the edit button in the top right? I'm not sure if this was there in 2.2.1 but I just noticed it now. That is something I have definitely wanted!

It wasn't there before - which made absolutely no sense.

I'm with the poster above - underwhelmed. It's more like a 2.5 release then a 3.0. There definitely isn't as big a difference from going from 2.2.1 to 3.0 as there was going from 1.1.4 to 2.0.

Mostly just features that should have been there in the first place.

True, Although I am excited it is there now, certain things like forwarding of text messages are things that all phones have had standard for many years. I still do not think there is a way to send a phone number to someone via text message. The 3.0 release added the ability to send number's via email but not sms. This makes giving someone a phone number a matter of memorizing the digits then quick flipping over to the sms app. LAME:confused:
