open every application you have and open the activities monitor. haha that should bring the 8GB to its knees!!! im curious to see what its saying for virtual memory as well.

yes, opening every app would bring this thing to its knees.

But here is a more typical scenario for me. Our app running on two Linux VMs with a windows client (in an XP VM) and our Mac client (native) running at the same time.

This is cool, because I can normally do this only at my desk on my MP.

i like it. im glad it works. once the price goes down a little im going to pick this up.

8gb on 2.66?

After reading through this thread I haven't really seen this question answered. Is 8gb RAM compatable with the 2.66 models?

The internals are essentially the same in all of the models (of the uMBP) concerning the board itself, so why wouldn't it work in all of them? Why is it even a question? Doesn't it *HAVE* to just merely be a software issue if there's an issue where it only works on some of them?

As do I. Again my 2.53 wasn't the lower end model when it was released so I'd like Apple to qualify the limitation further.

I will feel wronged if the more expensive 15" has the ability to use 8GB.

UNIBODY support 8GB or 6GB as others claimed ?

ok, I was really waiting for 8GB ram. Now the "official" still seems shady. The specs. still say 4GB max. Even during purchase on apple website, 8GB option is not offered for the 15".

Many people were asking about 8GB support before and they found that the system can actually only USE 6GB !!!

WHAT'S happening now then ? How come that suddenly 8GB is supported ? There was no firmware update i know of to specifically address the 6GB to 8GB issues.

Anybody tried ? Who has TRULY functioning 8GB ram in 15" MBP 2.53GHz or higher?

scroll up a bit eddietr got it working in a 2.66

On the Canadian Apple store under Shop Mac/Mac Accessories/Memory/Macbook Pro you can select which macbook pro you own to upgrade the memory on and when you click the 2.66 15" model there is an option to buy 8gb of ram. It also states on the Apple site: "Memory sold by the Apple Online Store is guaranteed to be compatible with your Macintosh."

I noticed this a few weeks ago but never thought it was compatible until now.

Here's the Link

Another interesting note: The 2.4 macbook pro only offers 4gb as an upgrade.

That's retarded. I hope that the 2.4GHz can get 8gb so I would be able to add it on for my brother. But I don't understand, how come in some models, 8gb is addressable, and in others it isn't when it's nearly identical?

Probably somewhere along the same lines as when you purchase the low level 24" iMac. When you do this, there is no option to upgrade the video card. You have to buy the next level iMac to have this option.

With the 2.4, as I have this model also, they may not consider us as 'power users' that would 'need' or want to spend the money on 8gb RAM upgrades.

I just bumped up to 4gb in my 2.4 and it sure does run smoother especially when editing movies and processing RAW files.

I wonder how much 8gb would help and I do hope support is granted down the road.

So has anyone tried 8GB of RAM in the Late 2008 Unibody Macbook Pro's recently?

I know at the time just after launch, folks tried 6GB and 8GB and found 'issues' with the 8GB but since the new Early 2009 Unibody Macbooks do work, and we believe the issues were with OSX and not the hardware is it worth a re-test?

I have a 2.8GHz Late 2008 MBP and would love to get 8GB as I run a lot of VMs (and bootcamp into Windows alot for work).

I will get my 2,4GHz MBP any day now. really hope 8GB will work in it. not going to get it now, but when the prices drop I might do if it works.

Patience

Apple needs to come out with a statement on this. It seems ridiculous that a large amount of people who bought the 2.53 MBP are not able to upgrade. The 2.66 came out only a couple of months after and did not support 8gb on release. Both laptops were the midrange model and it is highly unlikely the hardware/chipsets have changed at all.

I would HOPE that in the next couple of weeks that we will see a firmware update which enables 8gb on these models.

As it stands, despite the comments on AA OWC have previously tested 8gb on the earlier unibody MBPs and the last 2gb was not utilised. It is hard to see how, without a firmware update, this could have changed overnight.

if it works on 2.53 and NOT on 2.66 apple has some explaining to do :D

well apple officially supports only up to 4gb so,.. technically, they need to explain nothing.

The 2.4, 2.53, 2.66, 2.93 ALL HAVE THE SAME CORE 2 CORE. THEY ALL HAVE THE SAME CHIPSET. THERE IS ONLY SPEED DIFFERENCES!

THEREFORE, there IS NO REASON 8gigs shouldn't work on the 2.4 and 2.53 versions. APPLE PURPOSELY DISABLED IT. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN DONE AT LAUNCH OR A FIRMWARE UPDATE MONTHS BEFORE.

I'm going back to PC.

It could be the video card firmware, actually. There's more to it than just processor and the intel chipset.

One of the video cards uses shared memory, right? What if there was a mistake in that code that prevented the use of more than 6GB? Say, for example, more than 6GB would cause addressing conflicts between the CPU and video hardware trying to reach the same RAM?

Mistakes happen. The 15 was not introduced as an 8GB capable machine. So it was likely not really tested with more than 4GB.

Then the 17 comes along and Apple decides it will be 8GB capable, so they test that and find some underlying issue in the motherboard or in the dual video card software. They fix the issue and then start using that updated motherboard/firmware back in the 15s.

Something like that is just as plausible as some sinister conspiracy.

If there was just a firmware change, they may even go back now to the earlier unibodies and package and test an update for those.
