I enjoyed this movie I must say.
I saw it twice. Although, I didn't see it twice because I really enjoyed it THAT much, I saw it twice because I went with my parents first and then my bf wanted to see it so I went with him (on his buck hehe) again.
To tell you the truth, watching it twice actually did help. I was able to get a better grasp on the story line. Like at first I didn't realize he gave Sam the drug that worked on the rat but not the human, but he did, it just had the same effect on sam as it did on the human. I totally missed that the first time. I was like "WHY THE HELL DID YOU NOT ATLEAST TRY THE DRUG??!?!??!" So the second time seeing it I was happier.
He was trying to get a deer, because he had no real meat really. Most veggies and he was excited later to find real spam and real red salmon or something in a can, and he mentioned how he was saving the bit of bacon they were eating so he was clearly low on actual meat and I'm sure a deer would be pretty great. Makes a lot of sense, meat doesn't exactly keep as well, and canned meat is usually fish or well... spam. Not to mention, a dog can't live very well on veggies and carbs, i'm sure most of the meat he did find or get probably went to Sam as a dog really needs it more then a human who can process protein better from a variety of things, so he got a lot less, a deer would mean meat for him and Sam in nice large portions for a while.
Now... as far as someone mentioning he shoulda kept Sam in a cage while he tried to find a cure. Let's be honest, even if he was set up with a big enough cage to do that... there is no way he could have. It would have been far too painful to watch what is now basically his family (the last part of his family anyway) suffer like that and experiment on her.
I personally thought the ending was good and fit really well. At this point in the film, he lost his family, and his dog and his home AND he found a cure for the virus. He really had nothing left to live for. He lived with the constant memory that he didn't solve it in time and that his family was gone, everyone he ever cared about was gone, even his beloved dog, who was much more then just a dog to him. People could argue that you always have something to live for, but I think... for his character, there was nothing else left. He CHOSE to let that be the end.
Not to mention, the movie title wouldn't make sense, he couldn't very wel be a legend if he was still alive per say
hehe.
Either way, I think it fit. And I liked it. I like the original Omega Man A LOT when I saw it. I mean.. Everyone loves chuck heston! lol. I really enjoyed it, but I enjoyed this in a whole different way. I think it was a lot less of a scifi sorta "thriller" or mystery sorta thing, then Omega man was. It was much more emotional and character based. I went in expecting that actually from things I had read and the story, and I got what I expected. I can see people being dissapointed if they were expecting a thriller or action packed movie that got nice and resolved or something. For what it was, it was good. And will smith did do a really great job. I like him more everytime I see him.
Random fact:You know he's also one of the smartest actors in Hollywood. He was accepted into MIT (turned it down to go with rapping/acting cause he knew he could make more money doing it and he liked it) and has one of the highest IQs in hollywood. I think that sorta shows in his acting and movie choices these days.
And yes. I did cry when Sam died. And I loved the Apples in the movie as well. Gotta love that product placement. It's the "If you could have ANY computer ever made what would you choose" thing. Well... clearly APPLES! hehe. That almost makes up for the fact he chose fords. lol
