Wow there must be some shady people working there, please let us know which Apple store you went there so no one gets F'd like you did. Gl getting your drive back.

As much as I would like to announce the store I took it to, I am going to hold off until I get in touch with Apple. Obviously this isn't common practice at Apple and was probably one person that is responsible, so it would be wrong to smear their name in any way until its resolved.

Ill update tomorrow when I start talking to people. Thank you all for the tips, suggestions and support.

I'm always amazed when I see posts like this. There is absolutely no way I'm taking any computer in for service with my hard drive containing my data. I always swap in either the original drive with the original load or another drive with the original load. Nothing that has been added ever goes in for service (like my slot load BD-ROM in the iMac or the 2TB drive I added). Who knows what kind of problems could happen? If they ship to a depot it could get lost or stolen, or some less than reputable tech could swap the components, etc.

I just don't understand in the world we live in how people can be so trusting.

Not that I'm cynical or anything...

Cheers,

email address

Second, someone was using my computer for their personal business. When I tried to log onto facebook I was logged out and a different email address was listed on the log-in screen. Unfortunately I just deleted it and logged in with my account before I really thought about what had happened. This was before I noticed the HD had been swapped, otherwise I would have documented the email address. I am the only person that has EVER used this computer, so there is no way that could have been an accident.

That email address is probably still on your laptop, usually if you go back to the log in page and click in the box , the little drop down box opens and shows the emails that have been entered in.

95% of Apple customers who send in their computer don't have the expertise to swap drives before sending it in. They have no choice but to be trusting.

I think the stock HD was 250GB. The SSD was 240GB and the drive that ended up in it was 500GB. Ive got everything that I can gather as far as documentation. When I get up tomorrow I am going to start making phone calls and see how far I get. At this point I am a little pessimistic about what is going to happen. As said above its my word against theirs. Im the dumbass that left a $500 HD in the machine.

If the replacement 500 gig is an Apple drive, you've got them there. Apple branded drives are only (usually) available through Apple retailers, who have to have an Apple certified technician install the drive.

If you have an Apple 500 gig drive now, somewhere in the system would have to be a record nothing the upgrade. No record noting the upgrade = funny business.

I had a somewhat similar experience with the genius bar at one of my local apple stores. In my case it resulted in an entire 23" ACD vanishing. After repeatedly being lied to by the store employees I got fed up and emailed that sjobs email address. Long story short, two days later I had a brand new 30" ACD.

In my case I wasn't the first person to have been stollen from at that store and I doubt you're the first either. Apple seems to take this kind of thing very seriously. The geniuses who were responsible in my case were fired and I'm guessing that apple took legal action against them as well (I was only the tip of the iceburg as it turns out).

Good luck with your case.

Update

So I am hitting this from all angles. I phoned the store again and spoke to the manager again. He again told me that there is no way this could have happened in his store. He asked me to not call any more with these accusations.

I called apple care and have a case started. She said the case would be escalated to the appropriate department and I should expect someone to be in touch with me soon. She wouldn't give me any contact information for a higher department.

I emailed the email address listed in the beginning of this thread as well and ask it be forwarded to the appropriate people.

We'll see what happens. The ball is rolling at least.

I am so sorry this happened to you. Hope that person gets fired, and handcuffed would be good too.

That's a great story! I think the lesson to be learned (by others reading this) is that if you have been scammed, report it to senior management, and if appropriate, the police. You may not get your stuff/money back - but your report will help catch the miscreants and stop them from scamming others. If you've been scammed, you're probably not alone.

Search through your Console logs. There could be some evidence that you booted OS X via the SSD before.

Update

Another quick and last update.

Apple is taking care of it. They can see in the system that the machine was dropped off with the SSD.

I've been asked to stop this thread and have it deleted if possible. Apple was aware of the thread without me saying anything about it at all about it.

Thanks for the help all.

Apple must be confused. Threads only stop and disappear for no good reason on Apple's Discussion Forums. This is MacRumors. ;)

Glad to hear Apple is doing the right thing. Next time throw the OEM or some cheap drive in first (but I guess you know that too well now :)

I hope they make up for it. While it could be your fault or leaving that SSD in there who are they to steal from you, their customer?!

They owe you, man.

At least it's getting taken care of. Make them give you that 500gb HDD and then you can keep it as an external lol

Hmmmm....... Apple can see in their system that it had the SSD, but the store manager swears it couldn't have. I think someone is about to get, at a minimum, a memo from Head Office.

Congrats on getting resolution...It was only due to your own tenacity. Sad to say, many would not have pursued it...

Who is Apple to ask you to delete this thread, or "stop" it? It seems to me that they have a perfect opportunity to give themselves some good publicity by rectifying and resolving the issue. I don't see it as a negative...I see this thread as a positive...as long as they resolve the issue.

...and this thread might help them get rid of whoever dishonestly pulled the switcheroo on you...without fear of a "wrongful termination" lawsuit. Most corporations have a "See that your conduct reflects favorably upon the company" clause, and the fact that this individual earned Apple some publicity might cement their fate.

Exactly. How does Apple know about this thread anyways?
I'm curious to know how they are going to make it up to the OP.

It's fairly obvious that there will be complete denial on the Apple side. They wont be able to prove that someone took your drive. I'm sure that there is a record of who repaired your machine. So that individual could be questioned by the store manager. But how do you prove that the SSD was in your machine when you dropped it off? And prove that they cloned your drive? I have had HD's replaced by Apple and I have just gotten a replacement with a fresh install of OSx. A receipt dosen't prove it, nor a stock HD in your possession. So unless the person who took your drive owns up to it, you're probably out of luck.

Retrospectively, you should have made the Genius document and verify in their system at drop-off that the SSD was present. Then they could not deny anything afterwards. Now it's simply 'he said, she said'. I would call Apple customer relations and let them investigate. They are very nice and always try to make the customer happy.

It's a sad story, and I wish you good luck. Please keep up updated.

Congrats....so Apple is "listening". Guys want to drop new MBP specs and drop date? We on the forums PROMISE we won't tell anyone... No?... Fine... :apple:
