Other So mad at Apple (Galaxy Z Fold7)

I am not opposed to a foldable, I am opposed to the likely +2000 USD price. :) If Apple wants the foldable to be their tippy, tip top model, that is fine; I will pass due to the price. Perhaps in 4 or 5 years, the foldable phone will replace the standard slab phone, and its price will drop significantly. Then, I will be able to afford one. But for now... no way.

“It's about being able to read PDFs without zooming in, have plenty of room for two full phone-size apps to be open side-by-side”
LOL! 😂

That’s the rationale for a foldable?!

If you need a device that can do that… It's called an iPad and you can get a good one for under $300!

The quest for a single device that can do it all is a mirage; a snare and a delusion.

Don't get me wrong — it sounds cool. It'd be great to have — at a reasonable cost, high quality, good longevity, and with battery life comparable to current iPhones. Pocket-ability remains a concern. It should fit comfortably in a front pants pocket.

But you know what else sounds cool? Bringing back the iPhone Mini and the 2-pound 12” MacBook! I'd buy both of those before a foldable or a Vision Pro.

But I realize there are different markets and different desires — which perplex others who view the world differently.

Frankly, I’d like to see Apple bring out a different kind of foldable — a pocketable flip phone much like a Star Trek communicator and sized like an old Nokia or an iPhone SE (2016).

Small, built-in rugged frame aka protective case; outside small screen, inside double screen or even mini Magic Keyboard on bottom and mostly bezel-free top screen. (I'm not being satirical or mocking. I'm quite serious.)

It could even come in two models— one that opens vertically (the “Beam Me Up” model 🚀😎); and the other horizontally (the “Hymnal” or “Paperback” model 📖).

✅ 💯

Foldable phones have issues with creases in the screen, and there were mechanical issues with the hinges being a weak point.
Yes, the latest Samsung apparently resolved these.
So maybe Apple was waiting for tech to allow them to deliver a foldable that didn’t have those issues.
🤷🏽
A friend of mine is a Pixel engineer and I can say that Samsung has absolutely not resolved the hinge issue. These phone still have an elevated failure rate which is why Apple is not in a rush to ship one out.

I haven't seen one in person, but crease on the new version is supposed to be hard to see now.
No, the crease was still easy to see on the one I played with, it’s just far less obvious than it used to be.
Iphone user since 3g comenting on my new z fold 7. This hardware is beyond anything i have purchase from apple in the last decade. It will make u a foldable believer and so much lighter and easier in one hand use than a 16 pro max. Still struggling with Android tho 😪 and might be the reason i return it. If apple dont announce a competitor next year I will be officially out.
I’m not trying to say you shouldn’t like folds, if it works for you, great, but every time I’ve used one just reinforces their uselessness to me. To me, a foldable is an over-complicated phone that turns into the worst version of a tablet.

The only thing I thought about the Fold 7 when I used it was noticing that they’ve made it a lot less awful. The hinge no longer made me afraid to open it close it, and the crease has been made less obvious.

I've seen foldable phones and they just seemed like a gimmick. Last night I had dinner with a friend who had the new Galaxy Z Fold 7.

I own every product in the Apple store and this was the first thing I've seen that made me want to ditch my iPhone. I couldn't believe how amazing it was. Folded it was thinner than my iPhone 16 Pro Max. Videos on the open screen were breathtaking, and there was no hint of a seam down the middle. And this this is so thin when opened you just can't believe it.

I haven't been to MacRumors in awhile, so I went and looked and they peg an Apple foldable phone for fall of NEXT YEAR.

What in the world is going on at Apple? They have all the cash in the world, all the top people, and they just can't do this stuff?

Honestly, this phone made my iPhone look like a Gen 1 product. If you haven't held one, you will first be amazed at the phone itself, but as that wears off you will just get madder and madder thinking about how Apple missed this. It's like the company has been asleep for five plus years.
Why get mad at Apple? They are outperforming every other tech company. If you like a non-Apple product just go buy it. Apple will survive.

Personally I strongly approve of the way Apple often lets other companies develop nascent markets like foldable phones, as long as Apple makes a solid product when they do enter such a market.

You’re mad at a brand?

Just buy products that you like

No anger needed

I bought it day 1 and it embarrasses every phone on the market including other Android phones and makes the iPhone look positively ancient.

When it's folded it's as thin as the iPhone and when you unfold, you get that beautiful canvas. Crease is non existent and it weighs lesser than the iPhone now.

With Gemini embarrassing Apple Intelligence as well, it's a great time to be an Android fan.

My Z Fold 7 has turned quite a few Heads at the office. Some iPhone colleagues are even considering switching to Android just to get access to thus futuristic piece of tech.

Here's the thing, if you like staying on the cutting edge of things, Samsung is the brand to go for. It's not just phones, look at their crazy 57 1000R curved Neo G9 MinLED monitor, the 3D monitor, 14.6 tablet with an OLED and their QD OLED TVs

Samsung surpassed Apple in innovation long ago. What's funny is Samsung is supplying the display for the foldable iPhone next year. Apple also needs Perplexity to somehow prop up its failed AI foundation. At this point the only innovations Apple does is using cash to buy other innovative companies / products
What’s funny is Sony is supplying the camera for Samsung. Just like Google pays Apple just so they can have as a default setting for the website.

You can be like Marques Brownlee and use an iPhone and Android.

I think apple is better at software and their phones lasts years while as you can see with all the androids, there is new and better hardware in every few months and the last one just dont get the updates and are left out easily. For first 15 days you will love the fold, but after it when you look at the apps, they are much better on iphone.

Hmmmm.. I have a friend that left apple for a Samsung foldable. He is getting the Z-fold 7 as well soon. They are not pro models though, so don’t expect Apple to manufacture a foldable in the Pro line. Foldables like the z 7 won’t be good for photography & professional photography / video work because of its size & build. I suppose the foldable phones are targeted towards a specific group of people. Myself, I have zero interest in them. I don’t think BeastGrip or Moment will make a cage or phone holder to use for photography & video for a foldable unit like the Z-7 & Im sure the cameras are average. I know you can say, “not everyone is a photographer” and I agree. But that’s why a specific & small group of people want a folding phone. I take a lot of photos with my 16 pro max and some video, the size of the pro max iPhone & screen is plenty large. If I need larger, I use my iPad or MacBook Pro.

What’s the screen made of on the Z-7? It must be made of plastic of some sort in order to fold in half, so no screen protectors at all I’m guessing. Maybe they won’t be needed and the phone probably won’t properly fold with extra glass in place. I’ve always questioned the henge, the center fold, & wear / tear of the parts & if they will hold up with hundreds of open & close motions. It’s neat to see the various types of phones these days & I’m glad there is something for everyone. I will continue using the pro max version of phones.

And those who want an apple foldable phone there is one on the horizon. If it’s a can’t wait, android has some models.
This Apple horizon is moving farther and farther. 8 years wait might represent a significan chunk of their life for some folks. And then Apple may decide not to release it at all turning them into suckers.

There is nothing funny about that. It's a camera like how Qualcomm makes the chip inside the Samsung. It's a product which has been made for generations.

Samsung invented foldable displays. What's Apple invented recently?

About the search engine. What difference does it make?

Samsung actually uses their own ISOCELL image sensors for main cameras on the flagship phones. They do use Sony sensors too (secondary cameras, double sourcing strategy etc.) There is nothing funny about it. Sony is not a Samsung (or anyone's) competitor in the smartphone market.

professional photographers and cinematographers don’t use cellular telephones to do their work
Yes, Many of them do. All of the Apple keynotes that you watch nowadays are filmed on the iPhone. The new movie 28 years later was shot entirely on the iPhone, except for some drone work. The iPhone is lightweight and more portable than the large & bulky cinema cameras of today. The black magic camera app is free, it’s a professional camera app for video for the iPhone. BeastGrip sells cages and rigs and external lenses and adapters for the iPhone to shoot movies for content creators. I use the BeastGrip Pro & the BeastCage. I also have the 1.7x teleconverter lens, the 1.33x anamorphic lens and the 0.7x wide lens for my two 1TB 16 pro max iPhones.

You should research it & see for yourself!!! There’s a lot of information out there for you to read and educate yourself with.

fair

I could have been more clear and said

“MOST professional photographers and cinematographers don’t use cellular telephones to do their work”

Your examples are all fun edge cases of people using new technology to do things in different ways (though I would say using apple keynotes as an example is pretty silly)

More to the point though I guess, while foldable phones are not for me, they aren’t going to fail if they aren’t well suited to photography or cinematography

Most photographers and cinematographers don’t use cellular telephones to do their work AND most people don’t buy cellular telephones to do photography and cinematography

What sort of work do you do?

Sincerely curious and interested

If Apple makes a foldable I would still not care about that. I don’t want to look like a geek or something with a goofy book-like device.

Also I don’t watch videos on iPhone. There is an iPad (large 13 inch, can you make a foldable of that size? I guess NOT), an iMac, a TV and Macbook for that purpose

The point isn't for the Fold to replace those devices but to augment them. You get a tablet and a phone rolled into one on the go. I don't want to carry around a bulky iPad Mini everywhere I go.

The Fold renders the iPad Mini completely obsolete.

And yes there's efforts on to make a 13 inch foldable. Read about Samsung's TriFold releasing later this year with a bigger screen.

Totally get how you feel. I had a similar reaction when I saw the Fold7 in person. it is honestly impressive. The design, the display, even how thin it is… it just feels next level. I have been deep in the Apple ecosystem for years too, but this made me seriously question why Apple is so behind on foldable. With all their resources, it’s frustrating to see them play it so safe.

True, but using the iPhone to take portraits and landscape pictures is a lot of fun for me. I enjoy pushing the limits with the iPhone. For paid work, I use my Sony A7RV mirrorless camera with external strobes and other gear. But the iPhone is what I use the most. I’ve gotten really good results & have mastered the iPhone camera using mostly ProRaw. Thanks for your input ..
