Dude why are you still going? I AGREE WITH YOU.

Man, it's ridiculous trying to have real discussions in these forums without everyone just looking for something to argue over. or maybe that's just the point.

No no, I'm not targeting you specifically, I'm just saying in general that it does speak volumes that nobody, I mean nobody talks about an important spec on which Apple has a pretty big lead yet anything that Apple doesn't have lead becomes more sensational (we've just had potentially older A8 CPU sensationalism, which was a big topic) Gaming on iOS is a very big thing and we've seen some impressive titles like Infinity Blade or Rage, yet where's the discussion of the new GPU?

For the same token, they'll talk about the Xoom's higher-res display, but rarely anybody talks about other aspects of display: contrast, saturation, color accuracy, viewing angle, etc, all of which Apple leads.

You are right, in a perfect world the device with better specs will be a better product. but that's not the world we live in. In our world, you gotta do more with less, that's how you be competitive. I'm not willing to spend MORE money on something that works LESS well, even if they put the specs through the roof, as long as it doesn't work well, I'm not getting it. therefore, i'm not buying a Xoom, I will buy an iPad 2 tomorrow.;)

Of course it works less well, because it's Apple, right? Xoom + Honeycomb is marvelous and does everything well. It's the perfect device at the right price point for everyone.

I'm sorry, I didn't realize that. This is why I usually just keep my mouth shut rather than calling ppl out, because when I do, I act the fool. Anyways, press on Apple w/ the iPad 2 & iOS 5.... for the record, I wish a slightly better cam would have been nice, but I was just waiting for any type of camera.

I don't mean to be so freaky over it. People just get so argumentative so quickly. It's really not a big deal.

I'm definitely looking forward to iOS 5 as that's when I see the real improvements coming (fingers crossed for better notifications)

as for the camera, I'm just sick of my iphone 3g camera. Like the other day I walked out of the store and there was a bee with it's tongue thing out (proboscis?) and I didn't have my normal cam on me, I tried taking a picture with the iphone but it was too tiny far away, and if I put it up close it was just blurry. I guess that won't be as big of a deal on a big tablet cause it's not really gonna get used for that kind of picture taking, but it bugs me that I can't scan bar codes and stuff like that (well you can, but not well)

I remember seeing a comparison of different touch screen phones comparing their accuracy trying to draw diagonal lines with your finger. I think the nexus one was second best but even that was a joke compared to the iphone.

I've got a good friend that will simply hate on anything that's at the top no matter what his actual knowledge is of the product or service he's hating on. I get the feeling he likes to always have something to root for and that's it. He has compared the Xoom to the iPad and when he does, it's all about specs. He says the Xoom has more of this or that, and that's why it's better. Has he used either? No. And he doesn't feel he needs to. He thinks he can made an educated decision simply based on facts from online... that's his choice although it comes off as useless to me.

i don't mind reading the various opinions about the xoom, tab, rooted nook color, ipad and ipad2 here.

What i'm beginning to notice is that:
1) if you favor the ipad instead of [android device], then
a) you are a fanboy;
b) you are a sheep;
c) you are wrong;
d) you are afraid;
e) any of the above

2) you can't criticize [android device] for its flaws because it's open, features to be delivered soon, hypocritical because the ipad has/had flaws,...

3) you can't argue that something is better with less "specs" because [android device] will ultimately be better in the end, so specs can be the only differentiator[?]

4) it is wrong to say positive things about apple because
a) steve jobs is a horrible man who screws us all every chance he gets
b) apple "taxes" us ... (without representation???)
c) apple use substandard components (and damn them for creating a better experience for some of us)
d) apple doesn't give away things for free.
E) apple puts a gun to our heads and makes us buy their products
f) they are a monopoly
g) they are anticompetitive
h) they steal from the good honest folks at microsoft, nokia, motorola, etc.
I) submit patents which are obvious and should be open to all;
j) any answer from point #1

5) you can't respond to a criticism of [apple device] because,
a) any answer from #1
b) any answer from #4

ergo, there is no rational basis to be on this site. So we should close the shop up. Last person turn out the lights on the way out.

+1

Tech people (which I am for desktop computers but that's all) get jealous that it can do what it does without the need for knowing what's inside, this is what makes the iPad 'Magical'. They want to know what it can do, how fast it can do it, and how much they can overclock it.

I went though that phase with an android phone, swapping roms, OCing, swapping kernels, etc... Finally at some point I noticed I was spending more time with tweaking this and that just to get a working phone that wouldn't crash, etc and said to myself I don't care how it does it as long as it does it and well. That's what the iPad does, but to those obsessed with speeds, RAM, benchmarks, etc, that will never be enough, so they hate it instead.

but it bugs me that I can't scan bar codes and stuff like that (well you can, but not well)

Interesting stuff. In what types of applications can it not scan well? I'm part of a startup and we're in that area of business and we're trying to push out use of the iPad 2 as part of our product package. We've standardized and recommend using the RedLaser because with our testing, that has been by far the best we've used. Though at this time, we haven't been able to use some of the older smartphone models yet, IE iPhone 3G. Nice thing is when I get the iPad 2 (hopefully tomorrow) it'll be a nice "business expense" :)

I think he's absolutely right about barcode scans. It's actually rarer to find barcode readers that work well with the iPod Touch camera because the camera simply cannot grab enough details in close distance .

No one said it's a "perfect device at the right price." You said that, is that what you think? It's not what I think, the iPad 2 does not realize all of my expectations; but compared to the Xoom, the iOS offers what I want while the Xoom (Honeycomb) doesn't.

You say Xoom + Honeycomb is marvellous, yet gives no reasons for it to be so. I heard quite a bit of different stories than "marvellous".

And you know what? I trust Apple as a company, that's why I invest in it. You can call me a fanboy all you want, I bought apply stock at $102 and if there are more people like me, the stock price will go higher, i will be happy.

So yes, "because it's apple".

i wholeheartedly disagree with the notion that these people are 'tech savvies.' A lot of these people can't see past hardware specs and benchmarking results; the times where that was all that mattered has long gone. It's still easy to make articles out of them, and it's the masses that pretend to be savvy that's going purely by this format.

Right now the things keeping companies like Apple and Nintendo ahead are excellent software and user experience, as well as advanced tech at the right places (redefining motion controls as pertained to games; establishing smartphones and tablets as a valid medium; 3D for the masses, etc).

PURELY THE LIMITATIONS OF IOS. You can't do anything you need to do as a network/system admin for example. If I could use the same utilities that are in OSX...everything would be gravy.

All of these things are possible...apple just won't allow them.

A lot of 'nerds' (I can say that since I have a CS degree and too many certs to talk about) care only about specs.

The more experience I get the more I realize its all about function, design, etc. Numbers don't matter, how it works matters.

Right On! This is the reason us marginally tech savy people like Apple. It is all about how the product works, not how zigabytes of mghtz it has (Yes, I know this is gibberish, just like hardcore specs are to the typical human). What matters is how the product is to be used by its owner, not how staggeringly fantastic the tech under the hood is. :cool:

I was being sarcastic.

simple. tech savvy individuals hate all things iOS because they are simple. and dont allow much room to hack, customize and tinker. But they are a small minority. The majority of people who use technology want something simple.reliable. and give them instant gratification aka it does exactly what it says it does. So i mean apple is developing their products for the majority not the minority. In the long run they save vast money/time in tech support& documentation because their items are that easy and reliable. apples tag line should be "it just works"

They are called SPEC WHORES.
While I think there is a small percentage of them that fit this description, I don't think it is the main reason. I think it is the fact that there is a strong anti-Apple bias out there. It is what makes people go to a forum like "MacRumors" and sign up just to complain about products they don't own. Simply put, there are a lot of trolls that hate Apple.

I have been on forums that anytime there is an Apple device mentioned, they show up to talk about "iSheep" and how much they hate Apple. I even started adding this link to my signatures on those sites.

Before the iPad came out, many were saying that it would be a complete failure...wrong. They also said they could not figure out how to hold it, it was too heavy for them, they prefered a keyboard, etc... The same people are now writing love poems to the Xoom.

This.

There is nothing wrong with the iPad hardware, its a beautiful device. The problem lies with Apple's locked down nature that does not allow more customization of iOS. The strict limitations on what developers cannot do greatly limits the appeal to 'tech savies'.

in other words, it's designed for real people who don't care what wall paper or theme is on their phone because it's not the center of their life but just a tool

There are a whole bunch of tools for network admin/monitoring. You can ping, traceroute, investigate ARP and get SNMP data on an iPad. You can use SSH, VNC and Remote Desktop to get remote access. Some manufacturers are producing iPad Apps for their hardware plus you can access the web interfaces on plenty of hardware.

Some of these options are not available for free and aren't as fully featured as desktop software, but they are there. What other tools do you need?

Who cares, really? If you don't like the iPads, don't buy them. I consider myself a tech nut job. Love it all. I buy every gadget that comes out (except things that I think are junk or don't interst me). iPad has got to be one of, if not, my favorite. Others keep wanting this thing to be mini-Mac or more. I think they are missing the boat, and missing the chance to enjoy one of the great tech gadgets to ever be offered to the public.

Exactly. My day job is running a supercomputer. When I have to travel to the dark site, I take my ipad, not my laptop, and am able to do everything I need to do. It's sometimes a pain in the rear, but it's possible. I do it because it's generally a pain in the rear to find 110v power in a data center, so I need long battery life. The ipad and apple bt keyboard, and I'm good all day.

What I'm beginning to notice is that:
[brilliant list of shill/FUD behaviors]

holy loly ehoui nailed it

Because iOS is VERY LIMITING to people with real tech needs.

On what planet does 'specific things the iPad doesn't do' translate immediately into 'real tech needs'? I guess all iPad users just have fake tech needs, right?
