It's just psychological warfare. They are more than likely just jealous that they can't have one- or ashamed to admit that they were wrong.

The Linux crowd will always knock everything because in their minds, they can build something 10x more powerful for half the price. This may be true, but still nobody cares- and the fact that they get little recognition for anything wears down their souls. They live and breath technology, yet nobody gives a damn...

The PC people simply HATE Mac people. They don't hate Macs, just just hate US. And for good reason: we've been shoving it in their face for years. ("Hello, I'm a Mac!" "And I'm a complete moron!") You don't just kick someone and expect them to not kick back. As a result, they go postal when Apple misses the mark. To them, we're claiming to have this superior device but it lacks simple things like Flash or an SD card slot. They don't hate the iPad, they just love to point out the irony. :p

Wow. Yeah. Pages isn't exactly like Word. Better return your iPad.

I loaded a word document into pages, didn't support fonts, picture formatting was destroyed, some pictures disappeared, etc... it's totally useless. If you want to be a hipster and pretend to write novels in starbucks i'm sure pages is great, but if you actually use word for something meaningful (school, science, etc...) it's no good.

Same thing with keynote for ipad. I imported one of my presentations, and it was completely un-usable. I did the same with docs to go, and it also messed up it up big time.

Currently there is NOT word processor/presentation software on the ipad that is really useable and compatible with 99% of the world that uses MS office. If you are one of the few who uses pages/keynote on your mac, then the iPad would be decent.

Why use the word hate?

The real disappointment is due to the DDT that the iPhone 4 has great cameras, and why shouldn't the iPad 2 have the same or better ones? at least the front one.
Also the screen resolution for reading looks awful in comparison to the iPhone 4. The 2X zoom for iPhone apps make them look terrible.

Apple used to dazzle us with better products and with iPad 2 for the screen and the cameras they didn't.

The main thing is the ipad doesn't focus on being "nerd friendly". It doesn't maximize specs for no reason, it doesn't require "skill" to use. It's accessible, attractive, and usable. It works for 90% of what most people need. Even "uber geeks". But it doesn't provide bragging rights for people who like to measure and benchmark.
guess you missed this

with something like the xoom, (more memory, better cams, etc) the software may be mediocre right now, but it will definitely improve with time and the hardware is there to back it up along the way.
buy the time it "improves" where do you think iPad will be? How much of the App marketshare must Apple have before these guys just... Quit?

So you feel its impossible for an Apple fan to also be capable of thinking for themselves or worry about their own consumer needs rather than Apple's bottom line? Maybe you should reconsider who you call "ignorant" since youre the one throwing the blanket statements on everyone.
We also care about Apple's bottom line because we want them to beat the competition. We don't want to fall back into the "Dark Ages"... No, not again.

Seriously? You're bent because Pages isn't 100% compatible with Word? Do you know how silly that sounds?

If you need your Office docs to be portable, get a Windows based netbook. Clearly iPad is not for you.

99% of the world uses office, pages is not compatible with office (even though it claims to be), of COURSE i'm 'bent' about that you ^&*&^&.

Do you know how silly you sound? Oh great, a completely useless piece of software for a useless tablet, don't know why anyone would be 'bent' about that. Hey, being able to edit and use word documents (like I said, 99% of the world #$%#$$) would actually start to make the iPad a useful device instead of a toy, and it's a VERY simple request. What you've just said basically is if you actually need to do ANYTHING useful on an iPad, don't buy an iPad because it's useless. Typical brainwashed apple fanboy that can't think for themselves. You are the definition of a sheep.

Wake up you apple apologist.

Oh and let me guess, you're either a child who's parents bought them an iPad, or an old person who doesn't understand technology and it's uses.

EDITED insulting words for hurting the fanboys feelings.

I don't mind reading the various opinions about the Xoom, Tab, rooted Nook Color, iPad and iPad2 here.

What I'm beginning to notice is that:
1) If you favor the iPad instead of [Android Device], then
a) You are a fanboy;
b) You are a sheep;
c) You are wrong;
d) You are afraid;
e) Any of the above

2) You can't criticize [Android Device] for its flaws because it's open, features to be delivered soon, hypocritical because the ipad has/had flaws,...

3) You can't argue that something is better with less "specs" because [Android Device] will ultimately be better in the end, so specs can be the only differentiator[?]

4) It is wrong to say positive things about Apple because
a) Steve Jobs is a horrible man who screws us all every chance he gets
b) Apple "taxes" us ... (without representation???)
c) Apple use substandard components (and damn them for creating a better experience for some of us)
d) Apple doesn't give away things for free.
e) Apple puts a gun to our heads and makes us buy their products
f) They are a monopoly
g) They are anticompetitive
h) They steal from the good honest folks at Microsoft, Nokia, Motorola, etc.
i) Submit patents which are obvious and should be open to all;
j) Any answer from point #1

5) You can't respond to a criticism of [Apple Device] because,
a) Any answer from #1
b) Any answer from #4

Ergo, there is no rational basis to be on this site. So we should close the shop up. Last person turn out the lights on the way out.

Oh my someone certainly likes to take their time and respond with nothing but negativity. That's bad energy and not good to be around.

I'm pretty sure personal attacks are forbidden here, troll.

So i guess you're what, 14?

Your post was one of the most useless and fan boyish posts i've seen on these boards.

Your post was an insult to my intelligence and 'trolling'. Simpleton was the nicest word I could find to describe you.

I'm pretty sure personal attacks are forbidden here, troll.

This is the most hilarious post I've read in some time.

On one hand you are saying personal attacks are forbidden,

The next you are the one using a term (to purposely be critical) that is against the forum rules.

Nice work :)

If the use of the term is forbidden then I stand corrected. Doesn't change my opinion of what's happening here, though.

I'm 46 and I'm not the one acting childish here. Your complaint is like being angry that your new diesel truck doesn't work when you fill it with gas. If you honestly thought that Pages was the same thing as Word then your mistake is your own lack of research. If you want portable Word get something other than an iPad. Pretty simple, really.

You have to remember, Steve Jobs is a business man.. He's out to make money for HIMSELF first.. When he thinks he can no longer profit from apple, he will jump ship.. He's no different than any other CEO.. They only care enough about the consumer to keep us happy enough to keep buying their products.. Nothing more..

James

I doubt that Steve cares about money. Most people who are billionaires are driven by other things. Making products that are cool and beautiful and that make millions of people want to run out and line up for hours just to get one, must be an incredible thing to be involved in. Being able to sit back and look at it all and think that you had a large part in making that happen would be pretty amazing.

An example of the annoyance I'm having with the IPad.

i'm trying very hard to like my IPad 2. Tasks that are so simple in Microsoft Word seem impossible in Pages. There's a simple form I created using tables that I would love to have on my Ipad to then fill out. Imported into pages and it showed up whacked. Tried creating the same table in pages and can't seem to figure out how to make the exact table - some merged, some a dif. cell size, etc. This is so easy in Word. People tell me all the time Apple is easier but I've always been able to make any microsoft program do what I need it to. The apple programs seem so limiting. (i.e. - ITunes hates my Emusic.com downloads - they just randomly disappear)

This is an example of a simple task I'm trying to do on the Ipad and pretty much the main reason I bought it. To have this form to fill out on the go then email and not have to carry a laptop. But two days in and I still can't get it to do this for me - a simple form. And yes i've tried PDFing and Goodreader and several other PDF apps.

Have you looked at PDF Expert from Readdle? It's somewhat pricey for an app at around $10, but it is very highly rated.

As for your e-music, it's hard to diagnose without knowing more... are the files actually disappearing, or is iTunes just not looking for them in the right spot? It may seem random, but does it often happen right around when you update iTunes?

i thought it to be pretty classic as well :)

I doubt that Steve cares about money.

Agreed! I feel he is competing with himself and racing with time. That makes me sad. So, I am going to keep upgrading my iPad as long as Steve Jobs is around. I have to enjoy apple products as much as I can for now. I wish SJ can live forever.

I can feel your pain. I love my iPad and MacBook Pro. And I love microsoft office, word and excel. I try to use Pages and Numbers, but I just keep going back to Word and Excel. iPad can't replace notebooks. You may want to get a MacBook Air, very portable and powerful, best notebook ever.

People were praising pages for being able to save as doc and docx format, and being able to edit word documents. This is obviously a massive positive point, considering 99% of the world deals in MS office.

Your analogy is not at all accurate. I would be angry that my computer is not an actual computer. Like discovering your diesel truck is actually an ice cream cone.

The iPad is obviously not a good solution for creating content, BUT, it would be great to load powerpoint presentations and word documents onto it with dropbox so that I could proof read/edit them. This, combined with the ability to read lots of PDF files and annotate them with good reader, as well as taking some short notes with notetakerHD would almost make the iPad a useful piece of technology, and not just a toy. I think it's a pretty obvious complaint, considering pages advertises word compatibility, but something as simple as an image and simple formatting was lost. For me the iPad would have to be #1 a useful tool for me to use for my school/work, and number #2 as a BONUS be a cool game/media device.

I don't know why people like you feel the need to leap to apples defence, call the iPad and iOS perfect, and say that anyone who has even a minor complaint should just not buy one. I don't think my complaint is unreasonable at all.

Because iOS is VERY LIMITING to people with real tech needs.
YOU are very limiting to people with real tech needs... Dealing with your kind is like watching old reruns. Same thing day in, day out.

I think it's because on these boards you get a LOT of older and non-tech savy people who don't understand how the world of technology works. They go and buy an apple gadget, fall in love, and come to these forums to gossip about it. That is really great that they are getting involved, but they don't really have a clue what they're talking about and defend their purchases (and more often than not their stock purchases in apple) to the grave. They get a rabid fanboy mentality and preach that apple can do no wrong, and any perceived fault is in the user and NOT the software/hardware.

Not everyone is satisfied with a cool web browsing, emailing, angry birds playing toy. A majority of iPad owners have never done anything aside from web browsing an email on a computer, and so seem totally baffled by us real computer users wanting more. If I had endless money I would buy an iPad JUST so my girlfriend could play plants vs zombies, but as it stands I need a little bit of substance to go with my cute games, and at this time there isn't quite enough substance. As I outlined in my previous post, it's getting close. With a simple file system, a big upgrade to iOS (iOS 5 maybe?), and proper word/excel/powerpoint editing, I think I could really make use of the iPad.

Apple makes the iPad for the average person who doesn't know what ram is and who likes to play cute games and check email. That is great because most people are like that and apple is getting very rich doing it, but for those of us with REAL computing needs, we will keep bitching till we get what we want.

Nothing will ever be truly compatible with word or excel...talk to Microsoft about it, they are the ones locking it down.

Still I see a version for iPad coming, however it too will not be compatible with desktop word...

Sheeeet, Mac office isn't even compatible with windows office.

Can the iPad be used for real work? Yes.
Can it be used for many of the same tasks as a laptop or personal computer? Yes.
Are there tasks that aren't suited for the iPad? Of course.

To suggest that because it doesn't do what you want it to do means it's not suited for "REAL" computing needs is ludicrous.

The iPad is less than a year old, and on it's second major revision. There are still lots of applications that haven't been written. I'd guess that most of the "it can't do this yet" examples also apply to android, webos, and chrome, to name a few alternate operating systems. What it CAN do is simply remarkable. The trick with the iPad is that it's a new paradigm. The software needs to be written to work to it's strengths, rather than making the iPad conform to the old ideas.

Filesystems are how things have always been done, so it's how "techies" think about them. But it's not the only way. This is the beginning of the next wave of computing, that further abstracts the nuts and bolts. That's a good thing. The average driver doesn't need to know how to rebuild their carburator. Abstracting the technology is a good thing.

My prediction, and it's not really that bold a prediction, is that given a little time, a few years at most, people will look back and see that the iPad marked the transition to the next era in computing. Using a computer shouldn't require that you know what a filesystem is, or what's happening with your document under the covers. It shouldn't require that you know how much memory your device has, or what speed your cpu is, or how many dots per inch your display has. If you can pick up a device, use it to get your tasks done, and not have the need to know any of this, then the world is better off.

The reason the iPad is so threatening to many "techies" is that it marks the beginning of the end. The days of needing to know what a filesystem is or how much ram your device has are coming to an end for most people. The computer is going to become a device you just use. There will still be a need for programmers and backend servers, and what not, but for most people, and most companies, computing has been a mixed blessing for a long time, and I think that's finally starting to change.

This is a good post but you are missing a big point here, you NEED a basic file system so you can easily move files back and forth for creating and editing content. People keep on apologizing for apple and saying 'it's ok the iPad is useless because it's not a laptop lolol, just buy a laptop'. Well why the hell can't the iPad be more of a laptop replacement that it is now. I'd much rather carry around an iPad than a laptop, if only I could.

Drop box does a decent job of it, and goodreader has an option to add files in itunes, but neither is ideal.

If I want to edit a document on my iPad, guess what, I need to easily TRANSFER it to the ipad, via a simple file system. Also if I want to edit that document and save a new version with a new name, or create a new document and save it, guess what, i need a basic file system.

I understand the iPad is a new paradigm in computing, but that doesn't mean they have to throw away every single aspect of 'traditional' computing. Some of those things from traditional computing are required to elevate the iPad from toy to actual productive computer.

I agree that it shouldn't matter on the iPad how much memory you have, etc... as long as it works. Hardware specs are fun, and when they are good it gives you a feeling of getting a good bang for your buck, but at the end of the day you want it to 'just work'. You should be able to download files from email/internet/usb stick/computer to the iPad easily, and then be able to open them easily. There should be a shared folder/file system that EVERY ipad app can access. Right now you have to load the files manually into each program, which is a terrible and cumbersome system. You don't have to be a techie to figure that out, anyone who would use it would realize it's a ****** system.

IMHO the lack of a visible filesystem isn't really the problem, it's a symptom of the problem. The problem is that software hasn't caught up yet. Give it time. The whole structure DID need to be scrapped in order to force the change. To make BIG changes, you need to take a step back, and there are going to be some challenging transitions.
