Why is it that everyone who drops their phone claims it was from some extremely short distance. "Only dropped 12 inches and it exploded", ect. Either your GF is a midget or has gorilla arms.
Or was sitting in a chair when it dropped or was pulling it out of a bag on the floor when it dropped or...

Or they're full of ****.
I am sure that many people exaggerate how short of a distance their phone dropped, but my point is that one does not have to be a midget to be in a reasonable scenario where the phone would drop from a one foot height.

So it's unreasonable for a midget to own an iPhone? :p

From what I gather, the OP started his scenario with the title of this thread. So I assume that she had already dropped it. I think what happened next was that she tried to pick it up and it slipped out of her hand and dropped it again lol I dunno. OP just drop the girlfriend. Next thing you know, she'll drop your baby, pick it up, and drop it again.

Why are you blaming apple for? Your girl dropped the phone and it was her fault. Apple didn't say iphone was shock proof.

Phones aren't built to withstand much of a drop, especially Apple's work of 'iPhone art'. It's pretty, but 'tough', not so much. Plus it's slippery making it that much easier to drop.

When a device costs $500-$600 and it's used everywhere and anywhere in all conditions, where bumps, falls and drops are quite likely, same with running into moisture ... phone's should be made to withstand these things. Dropping/breaking a cell phone is apt to happen to all of us at one time or another.

Engineer's when designing a phone should keep this in mind. Can they do it? FOR SURE! The could easily make the phone to withstand the elements, drops of 6' or more etc but that doesn't keep the economy going either I guess. Apple profits from LARGE from phone repairs, delicate phones boost the carrying case/accessory industry... and as usual we pay and pay ... the world keeps turning, everyone is happy right? :)

Phone should have a Needs to be a 'tuff book' design, what the hell they cost $500/600 and they should or if I was President MUST be made to be more durable. But, that wouldn't keep the economy or the case manufacturers and repair depots going would it?

The simple reality behind phones and their design is this - most SUCK, especially Apple's work of 'iPhone art' - pretty, yes. Smart? No.

Needs to be a 'tuff book' design, what the hell they cost $500/600 and they should or if I was President MUST be made to be more durable. But, that wouldn't keep the economy or the case manufacturers and repair depots going would it?

I disagree. The 'tuff book' design is pretty niche; in fact, you can even get water resistance in addition to shock/drop protection. But the majority doesn't need such a tough phone.

My bumper has already paid for itself many times over (a lot more now it's free!),

I accidentally projected my phone onto a road as I was getting out of the car. The phone was wired to my car stereo and the cable got caught in my clothes (full Scottish Highland dress :) ). Needless to say, it was after a few drinks at a wedding reception (I wasn't driving BTW...).

Anyway, not a scratch on the phone, but a few gouges in the rubber of the bumper where it bounced and slid along the ground.

Off topic, but does a kilt have pockets?

Perhaps the OP thought that the glass works like magic and would never shatter? This is some marketing genius by Apple.

Let me correct you. She didn't drop it on purpose. It slipped from a 1 foot drop. There's an issue if the phone can't survive a 1 foot fall. 4 foot fall when standing up is understandable, but 1 foot? Shoddy design and material.

blackberries can survive these falls. but lately i tend to use my iphone more than my blackberry

I dropped my phone onto concrete on Saturday.

My friend elbowed me at the bar, and my phone flew out my hand, over my mates head, and onto the floor.

Not a mark in sight. Although. I did have a bumper on.

Moral of the story - Get a bumper. OR insurance.

Or don't drop the phone.

the worst part of this is that, the girlfriend drops the phone and this guy has to shell out the 200.00 to replace it!

The good news is you can break up with your girlfriend. She would likely drop your child, so there is no use in pursuing the relationship any further.

Apple did you a favor to be honest. They made the new glass casing the same resistance quality from falls as a small child's skull.

Actually young skulls are very elastic and difficult to break. The bone isn't fully mineralized and the sutures are open providing pressure relief points on impact.

That's why a fractured skull on a young child is immediate grounds for suspected abuse.
