One little question since our European PSP Slim takes after Lara's waist- can you subscribe to text RSS feeds? I'd like to sit there with the PSP on a dock or something and make a little "beep" noise whenever one of my regular sites posts something new.

And Sony I would also completely love an email client!

I'm not sure jimmi, but on the email client thing if it's half as bad as the browser is/was then I certainly wouldn't want one.

:D in all fairness the Slim browser seems much better than the old fat one. Maybe it's the extra memory? Either way it's not entirely unusable this time.

That's the latest hacked firmware isn't it?
Would it be against forum rules to ask where you got the install software from? I'm in need for it so I can play latest game purchase (WipeOut Pulse).

btw. Love your avatar! Can't beat pixeled animations. :D Only 400 more posts to go before I can add one myself...

3.71 M33-4 is now on my brand spanking new PSP. Honestly though this is a huge update over the old one. Yea the buttons are really something nice!

psp-hacks.com has it all.

And thanks :) it's a walking animation from a game I'm working on. My first gif too, come to think of it!

My sister has fallen in love with LocoRoco and I suspect my brother will do the same for GTA. I might not be the only one with a PSP.
Yea, nobody around here has one any more which is more than a shame. No Ad-hoc for me.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll go and check it out. Can't allow Sony to take away my PSP retro gaming functionality. :D

Multi player gaming on the PSP can be great fun. There's about 5 or 6 of us at work that come lunchtime initiate some full on WipeOut action. :)

What program did you use for stacking up the animated gif? I've used ImageReady in the past for it, but it's a bit of a kludge for that.

We really are opposites Jimmi. :p
You used to be pro-DS and anti-PSP and now you're pro-PSP. While I, on the other hand, used to be pro-PSP and anti-DS (well not really anti just more pro-PSP. And I'm sure you were the same way) and now I'm pro-DS.

Although if I had to choose between the two and wasn't allowed a console, I would go with the PSP. It has more of the games I like.

Oh heavens no! Went for the black one as I mostly play at night, mostly.

I've been living a lie with the DS! Some games were good, notably New Mario and DoS (did not like PoR one bit  ). But I'm so friggin addicted to GTA:LCS and LocoRoco that it isn't funny. I've got a slew of games hitting my face this Xmas so it's only going to get worse. I found Pokemon Pearl to eventually turn into a terribly mediocre game in the end, I just totally gave up and used repel potions at that snow area. No fan of the new Zelda either. Contra 4 hasn't grabbed me like "Super Probotector" has on the VC. All this big titles haven't stuck!

The DS's reign is over for me till the next uber-stellar game.

... Oh come on! As if I'm known for my consistent attitude to systems and games :p
You'll change your mind with the next big DS release. Anyway...

Let's have some fun with this. :D

DS
+Battery life
+cart based
+touch screen
+no loading times
+no heat or motion or anything
+plays GBA games (massive thing considering the legendary GBA games)
-looks

PSP
+graphics
+looks
-BATTERY LIFE
-disc based
-size
-have to be careful with screen (nintendo realised that the exposed screen thing dosnt really work)
-new to it all (read; dosnt have a clue)
-will NOT be able to play FPS. other than Doom or with a goldeneye style *hold shoulder button to look* movement. bad idea.

and the unwritten rules for handhelds?

+Must have long battery life
+Must be able to take a lot of damage
+Must not have superfast 3D graphics (isnt that for consoles?)
+Must not use discs (loading, vibration, kills battery, savefiles dont like discs, easier to damage than cart)
+Games must be able to pick up and play with no fuss (portability)

The PSP is alright, but they're trying to be a console. and im only after the Zelda's, metroid's and mario's. and they really remind me of Windows, a patchwork system. trying to do everything but badly
not even the DS is brilliant in my eyes. the handheld genre was always one of fantastic gameplay as they couldnt produce beautiful graphics the game makers efforts were focused elsewhere, be it gameplay or music or whatever. Advance Wars, Tetris, Mario Land, Mario Advance, Metroid Zero Mission etc. and now that handhelds are all going 3D we're going to lose the only solid place for 2D gamers, like it used to be consoles for 3D and handheld for 2D. bugger.

PSP sales fans really should note: that the DS sold 60,000 (or was it 6000) more units than the PSP in the PSP's own launch week in Japan. erm *KAPOW!*

when will people realize that the PSP is just a portable PS2 (portable at 2 hours battery life? hmmm) that brings nothing new to the table at all. heh and i thought mac owners loved innovation and need i go on about how the Gameboy has already beaten down 13 competitors in the past, 75% of which were more powerful that the GB. that the DS is backwards compatible. that it has double the battery life and is half the price (round about).
nintendo knows handhelds which is why they dropped uber real graphics for simple graphics which saves a hell of a load of battery power.

"buy another battery!" they say
Lik Sang stock official DS batteries for £6.99, PSP batteries are £35.99 or at least they were when i imported my DS a month ago.

Joe Public likes things cheap.

Firstly, absolutely no game can beat Zelda, Metroid and Mario gameplay wise, which is the only thing that counts to gamers, not PSP multimedia people. Need i bring up links to Metacritic with their world-wide scores?

You wouldn't see me dead with a PSP just now, to me its like the Xbox. at first there was absolutely nothing bringing me to it. its just overpriced faulty hardware. But then a few years later I bought one, chipped it, and now using it as a Media Centre. So many i'll get a PSP when the price drops to something barely reasonable for a handheld gaming machine.

If i were you i'd just go out and buy a 2nd hand PS2. After all the PSP is just a watered down version of that but with early Dreamcast quality graphics with the high possibilities of a faulty screen, analogue button/stick thing, low battery life, overpriced console/memory sticks/games, terrible sales figures etc...

 My revenge is complete.

Granted, most of these are from 2005...but still :p

^Zing!

This is just about hand held game platforms, so obviously jimmi is not going to roast for his comments, but does this mean that he has been caught dead? Who caught him? That whip-wielding Belmont family?

We know that  the PSP launch was so pants, it took me this long to really get into it. But I'm there now and I've dragged my brother along too - he's buying the broke PSP. Bypassing the broken drive by him dumping his purchased games to a memory stick but he might get a laser replacement (we believe this to be the problem now).

Mind you I didn't like the Xbox on launch. Took a good 2 years before I got one of them. I tend not to jump into systems too soon :p

Not happy with the Slims battery life, it's verging on intolerable.

It's OK to like the PSP, but to shun the DS in an instant. HOW DARE YOU!!!

And I can no longer speak to you, because a TRUE 2d side scrolling nerd would have drudged passed the first few levels of Portrait of Rune to get to its good part. I had to level up my characters 13 or 14 times before the game started to become enjoyable. The game has its own thing going that's almost as great as Dawn of Sorrow.

I'll talk to you again in about a month once your new system nostalgia has warn off and you're back to your senses. :p

How bad is it?

I picked up a few cheap PSP games today. First time in ages.

IQ - Practical Quota, Gitaroo Man Lives, Mercury Meltdown for only €12.99 each and Silent Hill Origins for €17.99 :)

It might be okay for you, I've got my UMD clock speed set to 300mhz to combat the framerate problems in Liberty City Stories which cuts the battery to 3 hours. It's not great especially coming from DS Lite and GB Micro land.

Hours later

Just watched the whole of I, Robot and it only took off 30% of the battery. I find that a little astonishing as it's almost a 2 hour film! Maybe the system loads more of the film into the RAM to cut down laser time?

Did you watch I, Robot off of UMD or the memory stick? The memory stick would GREATLY save battery life as the disk doesn't spin.

UMD. Came with the guys PSP along with Advent Children *urgh*.

Psp

Hey i have a PSP and the most common problem when this ocurrs is that the plastic Of the front cover of the UMD is pushed in and holding the Disk still

Hope that helps

-Bryce

P.S. the psp lasts longer on the movies becuase the processor doesn't run aslong because it doesn't have to comprened the actions you want it to do like in the games

also not to dis the DS but the PSP is better because the 2d Games arnt that good sorry, the PSP rules

Even you can concur about the greatness that is Dawn of Sorrows, my PSP migrating friend. :p

And PLAY PoR. Trust me on this! I was let down at first to and it took me several attempts -- about 2 months after buying it -- to get into it. But once I passed that threshold, the game really started to shine and I could not put it down. I didn't play it for 100% completion like DoS, but I did go back and unlock all the goodies. It has its own collecting thing, that's fun, but just not the same since they didn't include the option to customize weapons -- this really ticked me off at first.

I bought a Black DS lite yesterday. I did so in mourning of your gaming flip floppiness -- to use a phrase I picked up from the last rigged election here in the US. Ok, I was going to buy one anyways, it was my Bday. :)

I did try it! I beat the 2nd or 3rd boss before I stopped trying to think of it as a successor to DoS and gave up on it. I don't like the character switching gameplay and the music isn't all that memorable compared to Aria and Dawn.

I can finally play Symphony of the Night thanks to the PSP (hah, 2D). Like hell I'd use the 360 dpad for that game.

And joy of joys I broke my iMacs keyboard. So I'm out of work till after xmas. PSP came at the right time :D

Aaaand SW Battlefront: Renegade thingy is friggin awesome. What a powerful game! Running, flying and all that. Really impressed with that game. Surprised I got it for only £5 with the system!

Aw, that's cute, did your mommy help you sign up on this forum too? :D

Okay, just kidding, but honestly I only ever hear statements like that from kids.

Anyone who can't appreciate a well-designed 2D game has no taste in gaming, period. And the DS has a LOT of 3D games. Zelda, Mario Kart, Metroid...

^ Nah GFLPraxis, it is when you hear statements like this that you realise....... we have become 'old'. I'm affraid were last-last gen at this stage :D

Kids of today ;):p

So I'll be sending the broken PSP back tomorrow. I got brother a slim today which I just installed M33 on (really easy now!). And now my sister wants one too :D

This is kinda great.

(and to finish off the keyboard story - picked up one of them new Apple Keyboards today! This is the first thing I've used it for! It's so awesome too :D )
