I wouldn't say that it was overblown. Will it prevent the phone from being usable, or even enjoyable? Absolutely not. But every review I've read mentions the notch, and they said that it gets quite noticeable (in the worst way) in landscape mode.

It's there. It is not ideal. You WILL notice it. But will you care? Probably not.

You prefer thicker bezels like the Samsung S8? I prefer having more screen, which is what the notch provides.
Fun fact: The Galaxy S8 has a greater screen to body ratio than the iPhone X. And, it's screen size is the same. So, one could argue you're getting less screen with the iPhone X. Just a thought.

I donno all the hands on from the event seemed to say something along the lines that it didn't bother them or that they sort of forgot it was there after using it for a few minutes but the public took those hot takes rather skeptically. So it seems like the thinking along those lines has continued.

No, I do not think it was overblown. I think it was justified and I hope Apple hears peoples complaints, because it really is an idiotic design decision. Now, I didn’t help matters by buying one, but I had to upgrade this year (giving current phone to father in law that needs a phone) so I went with the X because its, well, the X.

I think the way everything zooms inside the screen with borders around a whole window is idiotic. This would not have made it to public use if Steve Jobs was still alive, I guarantee you that. Us Apple fans would also being making fun on of Android people if this was their phone, admit it, we would.

I do hope they listen and make changes to how the notch is used. It should just be blacked out when in landscape mode. It would solve ALL issues. Why do we want a usable screen that is smaller than an iPhone 8? Dumb.

Who cares what X owners think. Are saying that if they like it you will go along with the herd?
I think it is poor design and I think it looks like lazy design as well.

The real question of whether the notch is "good design" or "necessary design" is, will it be there next year? I suspect not.

It all depends on how long it takes for apps to get updated to the new screen. Developers can cause Apple A LOT of headaches over this if they dick around too long. If it becomes so bad I could see Apple slapping down a date to get apps update by X or face XYZ.

Haven't seen many complaints about notch since it was released. Do the X users like the notch?

The option was to have a thick black bar across the top, or to expose the parts of that 'bar' that can be.

Apple chose to expose parts that can be and I think that was the correct decision.

The notch doesn't bother me at all, and so far there hands-on reviews I've seen they really don't care about the notch, especially after using it for a little while. IMO, the people that really holler about it are just looking for something to complain about.

No, because notch”gate” never existed. Watergate existed because the office complex the Nixon scandal was based out of was the Watergate office complex. It wasn’t a scandal about water.

Were people concerned for the notch? Sure. Will we know if the concern was overblown or not? Probably no until the bast majority have used the phone for a few weeks/months.

No “gate” involved, however. ;)

You're not going to hear anyone complain having just spent over £1k on a smartphone. If you've spent that amount then the notch won't be something that concerns you. At least that's the logic I'm embracing from afar.

I'd wait a while and hopefully people on here are honest about every day use etc and how the UX is. I'm hoping it becomes less of a problem (for me) over time. I don't even own the X but will upgrade from the 8 next year if...*if* there's a plus version of it.

Think the notch is one of a few things that I will keep my eye on (ooh pun). Want to know about how the OLED performs too.

I don’t like it. But given that we had to live with either the notch or small bezels on the top and bottom (such as generic Android phones) I much prefer Apple’s choice. It looks unique and the same radius around the four corners of the phone looks SO good.

People are forgetting that the iPhone X was designed by arguably the best design team in the world... also forgot that the "notch" gives the new iPhone a noticeable difference from ever other borderless phone out there. People were instantly able to recognize the round home button as part of an iPhone... and now the notch adds to its recognizability.

I think Apple have produced nicer looking products previously to be honest.

Being able to recognise it does not automatically mean everybody will like it either. The home button looked like it was deliberately styled whereas in my opinion the notch looks like a design compromise that is being marketed more as a feature. We’ll no doubt get used to it in time, but right now a lot feel it looks a bit gash.

Curious what screen captures will look like? I haven't seen any posted online yet. The notch area ignored I assume, the background of the app or home page filling that area in as if the notch were not there? Corners square and not rounded I assume? And how about the grab handle deal at the bottom for going back to the home page. I assume if present that won't be included? Like I said, just curious.

Seems like no one will completely like what Apple does. It’s great that they offer variety amongst their various phones and there’s even more variety amongst the Android market.

I’ve never had issues with Apples design up until now and have enjoyed every single one of my iPhones. It’s not that great that they offer ‘variety’ as this year has only brought one new design to the range. Unless you are forking out a fortune you aren’t really getting anything particularly new. I think they’ve been lazy this year and too complacent.

I’m sure there is plenty of variety in the Android market but only if you want an Android operating system. It’s not for everyone although I wish it was or I wouldn’t be so disappointed this year.

What I'd like to see is Apple offer true flexibility with iOS, more ways to customize the user experience as you can when jailbreaking. They can start by adding something to iOS equivalent to Activator. Love that jailbreak tweak.

lol a few months ago people said they better black out the whole top or its a mistake
now everyones defending the notch saying its better to have as much space possible usable as screen

jobs was right, people dont know what they want
