so, was notchgate overblown?

I like the size on it the most but I prefer the look of the XPhone. The display looks more immersive IMO.I think LG's V30 is the best looking one, very elegant, and no notch or bump to get in the way in a game, web page, full screen video etc.

A place to put status information. IDK why people act like other displays don't have status bars. They have two bezels and a status area.
I'll acknowledge other displays have status bars. With that out of the way I'm not seeing an advantage to ears.
...so you’d rather they have a forehead bezel like an iPhone 8 and shift all content down the screen as a result? This way we get the he status info parralel to the notch and content starts immediately below.
The shift down permits more information to be displayed compared to the ears. Since the ears aren't restricted to just status information you end up with a notch with other non-status content. If you adjust the content to avoid having a notch, which I expect most iPhone X aware applications to do, then I see no benefit to not having ears.
The notch needs to be removed for more screen space. I don’t care about Face ID or stupid animated emoji’s.
The sad thing is, Apple will embrace the notch for future iPhone’s which is the wrong direction.

People always like to say Apple is all form over function. This time they made the function over form trade-off and its a very useful trade-off and people are up in arms for no reason.

Good. FYI, the front facing camera is among the sensors there also.
Who in their right mind can defend such a controversial design being that notch, I have YET to see one reviewer praising it or even somewhat liking it!!!!!
You say that as if you would also expect any reviewer ever to single out praise for a bezel as well. The notch isn’t a feature. It’s a necessary form used to house hardware that supply specific features...which were praised. What the vast majority of reviews said was that you basically forget it is even there and that is exactly what you want.
No one will ever "like" the notch even if what the notch provides is useful. Sometimes you have to say...this is what we have right now and hopefully you can make improvements in the future but don't hold your breath. Everyone else has a notch too. It just covers the top and bottom of the phones otherwise known as a bezel...IE more wasted display space.
Of course it’s necessary but go with a straight bezel, why should it interfere with a users experience.... I don’t get it, bezels aren’t bad but intruding objects are!
Actually its not. People are saying they should've just went with a bezel. That's exactly what the current apps are doing.
Personally I’d rather have a solid bezel the thickness of the notch even it forces the iPhone to be a little taller if that means the notch will be gone.
My app is optimized for the iPhone X its been on the store since this past Sunday. Updating apps to support the iPhone X is actually really easy. The tools Apple provides means its really not difficult at all and all developers should update there apps.
I hate the notch. I'm still getting the X, so we'll see how it goes over time.

From the perspective of having a completely bezeless, true edge to edge display, i agree that having a bezel is not a immersive.
However having 1 edge with a notch out of 4 straight edges is arguably less immersive.
Granted, that’s from the same guy who claimed that Face ID wasn’t working in bright sunlight...but he later clarified that it only failed twice and he was holding it all the way down at his waist while trying to look down at it from an angle. This became clear after other reviewers began to dispute his claims.
There’s a difference between having an eyesore out of your line sight most times (the red dot) and having it in your face all the time (the notch). The red dot never bothered me either way, but if it was sitting in the middle of my AW screen, like that notch on the X, I would have had a problem.
I’m not a fan of that notch at all. I think it will take away from the viewing experience and based on initial reviews that seems to be the case in some scenarios. Will people get used to it? Some will, but others will have it in the back of their mind - same as it was with the bezels after a while. For anyone who plans on buying the X, they don’t have a choice, though, just like with the AW3, you take the notch (like the red dot) as a part of the total package.
A few generations out, iPhone X should:
- Be without a notch. They will have made the sensors/components transparent and embedded in the screen, or small enough to fit in the small bezel out of sight.
- Be thinner. The iPhone X is the thickest iPhone that Apple has made in years.
- Have no protruding camera.
- Have true wireless charging.
- Have a faster screen refresh rate.
- Have stylus input.
- Have a brighter screen with better viewing angles. After reading the Verge review, looks like the X may not have as good viewing angles as the standard Retina iPhone LCD.
Apple had best solve the notch issue for a potential plus model of the iPhone X. Landscape view is all kinds of ugly on the iPhone X
So I'm not seeing the fuss of the notch I guess... Good lol I have an X on the way...
