Never was there a more passionate whine from folks
who didn’t own the product.
It almost rivaled the 3.5 headphone socket debates

However it did spawn a new legion of industrial design experts.

Can’t wait to see how they change the world

I can imagine Apple getting rid of the ears eventually. Do you really believe they are going to have those screen ears forever and ever? Don't be so gullible, McFly! ;)

LG used rear volume buttons for only three gens with their G-series. They used second display for only two gens of the V-series. The notch really doesn't bother me and like Face ID, people will get used to it.

But Apple also has the right to change things up every few years. I can imagine those ears gone as early as 2019. By 2021 when the next real design change happens, it should be gone for sure.

There’s a difference between liking the notch and not caring about the notch. For me, I don’t care. Never said I liked it, but also never said I hated it.
All the reviews I’ve seen so far have all said it is no big deal after using the phone for a few minutes.
I honestly think it will just fade into the foreground when using the phone.

I think others need to just let it go in regards to whether other people mind the notch or not. People being ok with it doesn’t affect anyone else. Just drop it lol

"fade into the foreground"? :p

Although I'm still buying two I really don't like the notch and think Apple could have made the phone a little bigger to fit in the sensors etc without having a notch. If I really don't like it I may just return one and keep one.

Like gesture control, ridding of those ears is software-based. All Apple has to do is make those ears black. The battery % could be inside the meter.

Those ears can be done on Android. All Apple has to do is make the top ears have a black background. Simple.

As a user of a GS 7 Edge I see the notch being Apple's Edge. While the Edge devices look great the edge screen has its drawbacks. It's not the notch per se that I believe is the issue. It's that there are small components of the display around it which, as we've all seen, makes it appear that the notch is covering the screen. I think Apple would have been wiser to leave a small bezel at the top of the screen and do away with these corner pieces of the display.

One of the first things I would do if I got the X is download Zedge or Google Photos and get the plain black wallpaper.

People forget that the status bar on the top is set to transparent. You will still see the ears if opening other apps or browsing with white or lighter background. But on the homescreen, just use a plain black wallpaper. Saves battery too. Keep it static.

We have a decade of the iconic iPhone layout, big bezels, home button at the bottom. Does anyone think the notch is the future of iPhone design for the next 10 years? It doesn't seem conceivable a perfectionist Apple will let this bump survive too long, hence I think it's a temporary mediocre solution that won't survive too long (hopefully).

Yes it was overblown. Why? Because the notch has so much new technology in it and there is no way currently to hide this technology that is already so difficult to produce at the levels Apple needs.

The notch is a compromise for sure, but it was mostly to make people feel better about buying the 8/8+ instead of waiting. A “gate” situation implies that something unexpected surfaced and sabotaged the utility of the device. The antennagate was a good example of this. You couldn’t have known, before people started using the phone, that holding the phone “wrong” would caused weak reception.

The notch, on the other hand, is an obvious design choice that anyone can choose to avoid if they don’t like it. It’s not some type of scandal, and Apple will not be handing out cases to hide the notch. People will get used to it.
That is absolutely false, I waited 3 years for this 10th anniversary phone and money wasn’t going to be an object whatsoever. I would have waited another 9 months for the X but that sure isn’t the case. That notch is an eyesore , that screen could have 3D animations hitting me in the face but that notch has been a huge deal breaker!

TBQH seeing these side by side I think Apple made the right choice.

I think LG's V30 is the best looking one, very elegant, and no notch or bump to get in the way in a game, web page, full screen video etc.

This isn't true. Several apps I use have already been updated for iPhone X.
Yep, that’s right. I have 32 pending app updates . Many of them include optimization for the X. Not really care to update any of them when my new phone will be here so soon.

Reviewing third party apps that haven't been updated yet seems kinda stupid. They will be updated and if they still don't function at that time, I would understand complaining more.

I'm more concerned about off axis viewing OLED Bluegate.

“The one area where this display falls prey to standard OLED gripes is in off-axis viewing. Apple tells me that it has done work to counter the drop-in saturation and shift to blue that affects OLED screens traditionally. I can tell you that, compared to other OLED screens, you have to get further “off of center” to see a real shift in color, holding the phone 30 degrees or more off of dead on. But it is still there. For people who share their phone’s screen or use it at odd angles a lot, it will be noticeable. On some phones, OLEDs go super blue. On the iPhone X it’s more of a slight blue shift with a reduction in saturation and dynamic range. It’s not terrible, but it definitely exists.”

I’m not sure why. OLED is far superior to LCD in nearly every way. Off-axis happens to be one of the only areas where it can struggle, but the iPhone X display outperforms most in that category and doesn’t become any sort of problem until moving beyond 30° off-axis. How often are you using your phone beyond a 30° viewing angle?
