You can lock it to portrait......

I have my iPad set to do that... changing the setting of the side switch. Where can you make this happen on the iPhone? I just looked a minute ago. If it works the same on the iPhone... I won't do it because I much prefer the mute switch, I hate having to toggle volume up and down even more.

When I got the original iPhone, the mute switch quickly became one of those small features I greatly appreciated. I appreciate it even more after my 6 month stint with the GS2 for work.

* Text will be larger and easier to read in landscape mode.

* Less scrolling in portrait mode.

* Extra row of icons.

* Video will be a superior experience for sure.

It's a great move by Apple. I was not against a slightly wider phone but this is certainly nothing to complain about.

Indeed.

More screen is more screen and a move in the right direction after 5 years of 3.5" screens.

I'll take this small step forward with the hopes that eventually we'll see the iPhone settle in at 4.3-4.5" on the display.

Many people agree with you... My feelings are different:

1 - The text will probably not be larger in landscape mode based off some photos we have seen in other threads... It seems that you will see the same size text, and just have more words on one line. Also, this doesn't help the landscape keyboard.

ADDITIONAL: The text wouldn't be larger, it would be wider since the phone in Landscape mode is only getting wider, not taller. So if the text proportionally changed with the screen, it would be funny looking wide text. Realistically, you would just see the same text and see more words on each line like I said before.

2 - Yes, but I do not consider it to be a big deal.

3 - LOL. With all the people complaining about the app grid and iOS being boring, this just adds to that. And with folders and other options, this does nothing for me at all. I don't mind the grid, but I don't need another row of icons.

4 - For me, I do not watch videos on my phone very often, and when I do, I have no complaints, they screen is little anyway. So this does nothing for me as well.

In the end, you like it, I don't. However, I am sure I will buy it... or wait to see what comes next year because I do not like Android phones, and I like how all of my products sync together so nicely.

Bring up the multitasking tray. Swipe your thumb on it to the right so you can see what's left of the things in it. The lock portrait is all the way to the left.

Only way a larger screen on an iPhone will make me jealous and want one is if the new iPhone is similar to the 4S except all the bezel is used for screen. From the top of the home button to the bottom of the ear piece the edge to edge.

All this taller screen stuff isn't very appealing too me.

they cannot go edge to edge b.c of the antenna

Think about web pages for a bit. Despite the push for widescreen etc on computers the Internet remains at a vertical or portrait orientation for viewing web pages....nobody likes scrolling sideways on a web page.

Not only does it serve the Internet usage, but flip it on its side and it's a perfect portable HDTV

Thanks. Did not know that was there.

ADDITIONAL: That is so much better, thanks again.

I think that is a problem with most Apple products. Other than the Finger Tips sheet, they do not come with instructions at all, so most people don't even know what their device is capable of.

Most people were surprised when I showed them the notifications center, and thought I jailbroken the phone even though I showed it on their own phone.

Actually, the manual is built into the phone haha.

an extra row of apps! revolutionary.

i think for most parts, it'll be the screen viewing, for when you watch videos and stuff.

I'm pretty certain text will be larger and easier to read in landscape mode.

It will make for a superior viewing experiencing. Less black bars. YouTube alone will be an improvement.

You need to decide if the changes are to your liking. I can tell you now that I'm very happy with these advancements and countless others will be too.

We all know why we hate the iPhone 4SLong, but what are the potential benefits of this design? Any pros we can can come up with? Is Apple thinking of things we are missing?

"We all"??

To answer the question, a better aspect ratio for media.

U can take a look at the Sony Xperia play to have an idea. It's the same sizes and ratio as the rumored iPhone

The benefits are its taller. There is more screen. What's unclear?

The disadvantages are only that it loses the potential advantages for both a taller AND wider screen.

The advantages of having it only taller and not both taller and wider are:
1) It keeps the phone thin while adding some real estate.
2) Still allows for a more comfortable one hand use.
3) Batter life is theoretically better because the screen is smaller.
4) easier to "scale" current apps because they can just add a matte to opposing sides in both landscape and portrait mode instead of framing like when you watch widescreen movies. Imagine running an iPhone app on an iPad. It's completely framed in black to fill up the higher resolution screen. It's a little more intrusive and distracting than just bars on the sides or top.

So really, there are more advantages to go to a taller screen than to keep the current size, obviously. It may not be the perfect update for most users because they want a bigger screen, but the only real thing to complain about is they aren't taking it one step further... But it's a step in the right direction for sure.

Movies are just one thing that 16:9 screens are useful for. You also seem to have ignored the other points.

I really think your looking to much into it trying to work out what the s stands for. In the 3GS it was speed but for the 4S apple probably did it because people already associated the s with an upgraded device. If that makes any sense.

Tim Cook said the S stood for Siri at the AllthingsD interview.

Because watching videos is what people do most on a phone...

That's not what I said, but if you want to make assumptions....(kind of how you assumed and included "we all" in your opening statement).

It's because Apple has been very media focused. I guaranty this will be how they sell the new screen during the presentation.
