That's not what I said, but if you want to make assumptions....(kind of how you assumed and included "we all" in your opening statement).

It's because Apple has been very media focused. I guaranty this will be how they sell the new screen during the presentation.

I am saying deciding on an aspect ratio for a phone based upon viewing videos is stupid. What other "media" are you referring to?

I'm not saying its smart or stupid, I'm answering your question. Nothing more.

Edit: perhaps I should add "from the perspective I think Apple will take".

Edit2: since you hate it so much, why continue to obsess over it? Move on.

You're not at all answering the question. I asked why Apple would decide the [rumored] new aspect ratio is best after defending the 4:3 (or whatever the iPad is) saying THAT is the most ideal ratio. I recall Steve or someone explains exactly why they chose the aspect ratio for the iPad and iPhone. Now, it's not best? Why? What changed?

Sadly... That Steve is gone. :(

This is as simple as I can state it in English.....TO PLAY BACK MEDIA.

You think Apple is changing the screen ratio on a phone for media playback? Which is a fraction of what everone does on a phone. Whatever dude. Instead just say you don't know.

I mean that is probably a major reason...how can you think otherwise....

take a look at the top apps is the freaking app store. Probably 40 out of 50 are games that people play in landscape mode....making 16:9 better for that.

Once again, I'm not saying this is what I would do or why I would do it (I would leave the screen alone). But I think this is why Apple is doing it.

Of course I don't know, nobody here does. Your question asked for conjecture and that's what I'm providing. Why are you so argumentative??

Its a phone, with a tiny screen... which is why I think media playback on a phone should be the last of their considerations.

I agree with that statement. But I still think this will be Apple's reasoning because they have had a major focus on Media in their last 2 releases.

You are saying 16:9 is better for games right? I honestly am not sure either way on this one. I feel like they (3:2 vs 16:9) wouldn't be too too different in terms of playing games.

either way...that is definitely a factor in their aspect ratio. Also video recording. Right now HD videos are a weird resoluton

This may be a dumb question. but...

Couldn't they set the iPhone to record HD video in a standard resolution, even though its not the phones resolution?

You can do that now by double tapping the screen, but it adds black bars

Then I guess it comes down to how you view the videos you record on your phone...

For me, some I would record for tv viewing, but most, I just use my phone to show people, or message the videos to other phones

Sorry, not trying to be difficult.

I just don't understand the logic. If the new ratio is "better for media" (according to Apple), then why wasn't it better (according to Apple) for media when they released the last few iPhones, or when they released the new iPad? Apple is the company who has gone out of their way to explain why the CURRENT ratio is best for all purposes. It just doesn't make sense. "Media" is no different now than it has been the last few product cycles.

If they want to change it, then okay, but I don't think "media" is the reason, based upon this logic anyway.

The iPhone 4S can record 1920x1080 videos, and can play them on the screen at 50% (960x540).
What do you call weird ?

I mean it looks weird on the phone. I mostly keep mine on my phone too and when you toggle to video record you lose a lot of viewable area.

because they finally realized they had the wrong aspect ratio.

People that prefer taller = Hammer legion members
People that prefer taller & wider = Android noob

It's quite amusing really. Taller and wider has more benefits (visually) than taller alone.

Presenting... *Drum roll* ... The iPhone 6!

Wow. But then why not just have one of those plastic sheets like a veggie cutting mat with circuit boards in it, that rolls up skinny like your model there. Weren't we supposed to be reading newspapers on that medium by now (so said someone back in, say, 2007)?

A bunch of someones may have decided that we're no longer interested in newspapers, but I was kinda looking forward to that hardware option. Maybe they just ran into my problem with the veggie cutting mat: it doesn't want to stay flat when unrolled

Most likely they felt some pressure to increase the screen size, so the conversation may have gone something like this..."If we're going to change the screen size to appease the masses, let's take this opportunity to change the size and aspect ratio to something that follows our media-centric focus." Or something liket that.

Should we expect the iPad ratio to change soon as well? Whenever I use a tablet with a thinner ratio (16:9 or similar) I always like my iPad screen ratio better.

I'd be surprised if they did, but this 4" 16:9 thing surprised me as well, so anything is possible.
