I didn't mean to imply that I think they're not into vinyl, just that some are also into cassettes. My bad. They're into everything old and crappy.:D

Just as an aside, back in the 80s there was stuff you could only get on cassette... I remember The Cure albums that had tons of b-sides and live stuff on the flip side of the cassette that wasn't on the vinyl, for obvious space reasons.

I also remember that back in the 90s the Mr. Bungle demos (and tons of other music, obviously) being traded on cassettes... my copy was like 5th generation, and it was all warbly. Cassettes were awesome back then.

A label given by other people who are unhappy with themselves.

It's just human nature to label groups of people--I'm sure the hipsters label others as well.

It doesn't always have to do with self image or happiness etc., despite many labels having negative connotations.

I'm not a fan of hipsters as so many I know have snobby/elitist attitudes I can't stand. Otherwise I couldn't care less about a person's hobbies, dress style etc.

You just assigned character traits to a group of people based on their taste and style. I just label you contradictory.

It's also human nature to kill people and steal their things, but evolved humans can discipline themselves to overcome their savage human nature. Let's not make excuses for being irrational.

Meh. We'll always label people different from ourselves and socialize mostly with people who resemble ourselves.

I don't see anything wrong with it personally *shrugs*.

But I'm pretty much an equal opportunity hater and don't like people in general. So my dire not targeted at any one group. :D

Life's too short to waste time socializing with people that annoy you. I hang out with friends and family who are generally like minded, and to hell with everyone else. :D

Honestly Apple is much too big for it's products to fall into hipster territory. That is like saying someone who owns a XBOX 360 is a hipster. The hipster image use to be associated with Apple when only a small portion of the population owned an Apple product. This was most likely a Mac pre-iPod days and perhaps the first few years of the iPod. The association kind of just stuck even though Apple has surpassed that.

Mac/Apple users were labeled many things before the iPod went mainstream:

Tree huggers
Hipsters
Posers
Losers

Of course there was lots of names thrown around about being spoiled or having too much money to burn. Now I guess everyone wants to be a spoiled tree hugger?

I think you could call an Apple user a hipster if he still uses a first gen iPod or something?

But yeah, the idea that I have about hipsters is that they're people who specifically try to not fit in and like things that are not common: analog photography instead of digital, music that most people haven't heard and then they stop liking it as soon as it becomes popular, etc.

most apple users (not all) are hipsters. people who think they are superior or unique because they buy used clothes at a thrift store rather than the mall where "normal" people go.

hipsters listen to underground bands that you never heard of so you dont belong in their class

you can usually spot your everyday hipster at your local starbucks where they hibernate for 4 hours at a time

What does any of that have to be with being an Apple user? Sure some hipsters are Apple users but that's a long way from saying Apple users = hipsters.

Because according to various ign article comments in e ipad section, they think ipad owners are "hipster fags" or whatever that is sopposed to mean? Soes it mean we dont care about speda or productivity and only want ipads because theyre cool? I dont get it.

Rather rich considering XBOX 360 and PS3 hardcore gamers that frequent IGN are stereotyped as stoners and slackers. And hard core gaming is the exact opposite of being productive so there is that too. Honestly when I was in line on Fri I didn't see too many hipsters. I think hipsters are more apt to want to be seen in the line at the new hot "underground" club rather than an Apple Store.

some.....not all. its just a trademark brand for hipsters. a hipster will never settle for a PC. They would much rather have a old model macbook with half the specs because of the apple logo and at the same time have ripped/dirty jeans on too look out of the ordinary. I cant really explain you need to come to NYC to fully grasp it lol

I have been to NYC. And considering how popular and trendy Apple stuff is right now it would make more sense if hipsters didn't use it.

Know your hipster:
  • thick framed, sometimes overly oversized glasses
  • Scarf any time of the year
  • Skinny jeans
  • Baggy toques even in the middle of a heatwave
  • V-neck t-shirts
  • they're all slam poets

I'm sure there's more, but this are the big ones... Oh and they're obnoxious.

trying to understand the bolding for the slam poet description.

;)

According to that gizmodo geek vs hipster comparison, hipsters try to emulate whats cool or popular and thats why they like apple. But you guys claim they want to be unique and hate everythunt popular, so which is it?

I think the "hipster" crowd is kind of fragmented these days.

You have the yuppy hipsters that are dressing in business/business casual clothes with their plastic frame glasses etc. Maybe upscale skinny jeans etc. when not at work.

And you have the more punkish hipsters that are wearing tight jeans with holes, have piercings etc. with their glasses and so on.

The former are probably more likely to be in to Apple products, the latter are more the traditional hipsters who should shun something trendy like Apple products.

But at the end of the day, who cares? It's all just silly stereotyping.

"Fag hipster" undeniably carries a negative connotation. So that poster the OP mentioned insulted gay people, and those who wear skinny jeans because they supposedly buy iPads, which is just incredibly ignorant.

I'd argue that the angry poster from the OP is practicing a little something I like to call projection. Just saying.

Oh that I'd agree on. It's one thing to say hipster. Putting fag in there is hugely insulting.

To be fair, it wasn't the OP who used it. He was asking about posters on IGN who'd used it as he'd never heard the phrase before.

I know- I was referring to the poster the OP was referring to (complex ;))

I probably look like a "fag hipster," since I wear American Apparel and obsess over Apple and frequent Starbucks. But I don't really care at all. People can hate all they want, but there's nothing wrong with appreciating a great piece of technology.

All these people want to be different, and all end up being the same...

(remember in the 1990's when all you can hear EVERYWHERE was "Alternative" Music - not much an "Alternative")

LOL...

Id probably much rather hang out with hipster fags than video game fags. Im talking the pure gamers who have not much social skills or can hold a conversation vs a hipster lol. Who would you guys rsther hang out with? Unlike hipster fags, most gaming geeks are really rude and sexually frustrated to the point they make vile comments in public and will embarass you if a hot chick walks by. But the hipster fag will just shine her off and hope shell walk up to him.

Way to stereotype bro.

I'm an honorary hipster who plays video games and I have a long term girlfriend. What does that make me?
