According to that gizmodo geek vs hipster comparison, hipsters try to emulate whats cool or popular and thats why they like apple. But you guys claim they want to be unique and hate everythunt popular, so which is it?

The former is a fashionista & the latter a hipster. They are really the opposite of each other. Hipsters are anti-mainstream social. They don't like what is popular b/c they believe they are the smartest people in the room and mainstream is for idiots. For example, if a unknown band starts having commercial success they are branded as a sell-out and immediately dropped. Apple these days is undeniably mainstream -- at times its the only store in the mall with customers crowding it.

Meh. We'll always label people different from ourselves and socialize mostly with people who resemble ourselves.

I don't see anything wrong with it personally *shrugs*.

But I'm pretty much an equal opportunity hater and don't like people in general. So my dire not targeted at any one group. :D

Life's too short to waste time socializing with people that annoy you. I hang out with friends and family who are generally like minded, and to hell with everyone else. :D

Qft

Just to add, I do hang out with differently minded people...usually arguing.

There are only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of others...and hipsters.

No ur just a gamer, almost everyone is, heck we have mainstream sega, capcom, gameloft and ea games like nba jam on the freaking ipad on top of everything ele it dos its good enough for gaming too. Heck we have fresking zelda or sacred odyssey. I was making fun of those ultra competitive titch gamers who play crap lik super meat boy and feel condensending and superior because of it. Because hard games make them so "badazz." and the ipad doesnt have buttons so it must "suck" to play games om. Lol such elitist bullshet.

Why is some antisocial misanthrope giving their opinion on the subject? If all of you judge some "hipster" based on their iPad or clothing choice, how do you even know what type of person they are? If a person wears Converse, must they not be a good conversationalist? If a person is a hipster, does that mean they aren't funny or interesting or loyal or fun? I guess it's because I'm older than the posters in this thread and I engage with all different types on a daily basis, but even when I was younger I didn't take stereotypes so seriously that I would limit my interactions or acquaintances because of them.

Lol @ http://www.dailyemerald.com/scene/hipsters-scoff-geek-over-ipad-1.1474222

San Francisco — the hip capital of forever — digs the new device, but for different reasons

"Some of my friends do drugs. Some drugs can keep you awake for many days on end. It would make sense for people that were "mad stoked" on the iPad to want to stay up for extended periods of time to make sure they got one. Maybe everybody who waited in line for an iPad was super high and having a great time."

I'm not antisocial, I have a decent sized circle of friends. Just saying people socialize with like minded people.

And sure, appearance isn't everything. It's just a first impression. But it's usually fairly accurate. People make conscious decisions about how to dress, how to wear their hair, whether to get piercings etc.

I don't avoid actively avoid people that appear different than me, but I do find that appearance gives a decent since of personality say 70% of the time.

And of course, some of it can be very obvious. i.e. wearing a band shirt says something about taste in music, sports team t-shirt or hat=sports fan etc. :D

I have some friends that look like hipsters, but really aren't in the sense that they aren't snobby or into obscure music or anything like that--they just like tight pants and plastic frame glasses etc.! And I encounter others that dress like that who are annoying as hell with being snobby about obscure art/music/movies etc. and condescending toward people who like mainstream things etc.

So yeah, appearance isn't a 100% accurate indicator, but it's useful. And I'm not in the business of trying to make new friends/acquaintances currently anyway since I stay busy and don't have enough time for current family, friends and acquaintances! :D I've got a good circle of like minded folks who's company I enjoy, so I'm good for now! :D

What I still dont understand is why these hardcore and ultra competitive gamers think apple owners are sheeple or hipsters for upgrading tech annually when they themselves upgrade pc video cards for for the same amount of money (many cost even $500 and ipad owners csn trade in the first model) every 6 months (so twice as often)? On top of that these nerds are the true sheeple because they dont have time or play pc games much they just want their pc to be the best and fastest so theynuograde it constantly and due to the amount of time they spend building And upgrasing it, they dont have much free time for even gaming on it. Plus they look down on those who cant afford espensive video cards or ask for entry level cards (just read the advice forums on toshardware).

PC gamers are a pretty different crowd than console gamers IMO.

Used to be more overlap, but now PC gaming is largely dead outside of MMORPGs and the occasional RTS like Starcraft etc.

PC gamers are more the nerd gamer stereotype, console gaming is main stream these days with games like Call of Duty Black Ops selling over 13 million copies (best selling game of all time in US now).

So it's kind of like Apple--things are mainstream but still get hit with the nerd/hipster label that just doesn't apply anymore. With serious PC gaming (requiring the kind of upgrading you describe) being the one exception! :D

You are hilarious and, I'm assuming, young.

Am I a hipster or nerd or what? I like a variety of music not just one genre and lately I've been listening to hip hop. My music tastes go anywhere from 70's to modern. I love new technology but if I don't know about something I won't be opening my mouth like I do. I do wear the black framed glasses because I like the look and I do like apple products but not to fit in a trend but because I like their products. I don't give two s**ts if a tree falls or if I run over a squirrel. I like to fish as well so what category do I fit under?

the kinda person that is uncool before being uncool was cool. oh no ive gone cross eyed.

they like to be "deep" and obscure. "unique" but really like all the other sheep. To quote a hipster girl i know "i wont tell you this new sandwich shop i found that i like, i dont want lots of people going there"

they usually have a tattoo related to an album cover of their favorite band.

look at this effin hipster .com

GTFO you hipster

i kid

dont worry about labeling yourself lol be you

Lol alright I just didn't want to seem like a hipster. If I think about it I'm probably a geek lol which I dont mind.

I really can't stand a lot of today's young adults (of which I am one). Forget the BS! This is not a play, stop trying to characterize yourselves. Stop being caricatures. I am an enormous box of contradictions and like so many different things that do not go together whatsoever. People get confused trying to label me. I wouldn't have it any other way. I suggest people try this way of life out... and if you aren't "cool" enough for any given person/ group or don't fit into any one neatly, good for you- that means you are a true individual (unlike the hipster and artsy people who think that's what they are even though if you've met one, you've met em all). Rant over. Carry on.

Ps- this thread is both ancient and miscategorized- sorry for adding to its "life", but maybe it will help out Atwiskus.

Ok cool. I honestly didn't understand the jargon of hipster I looked it up then kind of worried me and made me think oh **** I hope I'm not one of them lol.

What are you? 16 Again? Just because some chooses a type of beverage (PBR?) Really that makes someone a hipster? News to me. Everyone at the local bars where I live gets it, one of the big drink specials. And lets be honest after 4-5 beers can you REALLY taste the difference? I call ********. Judging people by their clothes, appearance, preference to certain things is going backwards in time. I guess im just not as prejudice as most. But if you do meet someone who is a "real" hipster. ie the memes you see about music/bands/etc being to mainstream or they heard it before it was cool, I agree those people piss me off. A girl at a party last weekend was jamming out to a song until she realized it was from Basshunter, then quickly rejected the song and said it was terrible because Basshunter is terrible, even though 30 seconds ago she was singing and dancing to it.... That is my definition of a hipster.
